Most humans need companionship and understanding and this isn’t shown more clearly than in the character of Dr. Watson from the short story The Adventure of The Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Since Watson is motivated by his desire to have a partner and his decision to follow Holmes creates a better bond between them. When someone is alone, most of the time they will search for someone to be friends with or at least someone to talk to.The character of Dr. Watson is a former war veteran who is in need of companionship on the cold, dark streets of London. Watson, being in a war, is used to having people in his life and above all having someone to talk to, however without Holmes in his life he is alone (Doyle 95). With Holmes a being a serious but sarcastic person he was the perfect person to fill the void of a friend in watson’s life and he wants this so badly. Watson takes it to the extreme in what he does with Holmes. In the story before the investigation, Holmes and Watson are confronted and threatened with their lives if they continue and investigate (Doyle 100). Now Holmes, being the sarcastic man he is, challenges him and Watson is left with a decision, he could either risk his life and become a better partner with Holmes, or stay at home and be sensible. However instead of doing the rational thing and keeping his life secure he decides to go risk his life just for a better relationship with Holmes.
