The Spanish Civil War occurred in Spain, during the years of 1936-1939 primarily. This Civil War was a result of a military revolt against the government, which was Republican, controlling Spain at the time. This military revolt was lead by a military coup, which tried to take control of the entire country of Spain, failing, beginning the Civil War. Just as in any other Civil War, there were two sides fighting against one another, the Nationalists and the Fascists. The Nationalists were also known as the rebels, receiving aid from Nazi Germany and Fascists Italy. The Republicans, the other side of the war, were receiving aid from the Soviet Union, Europe, and the United States. While, this Civil War did start as a result from the failed attempt of the rebels to take over the country, they had reasons behind their revolting. The Civil War was a result of the lives of the citizens and the politics, in Spain, that had been building up over the several previous years. There was a difference of social and economic standing between the Nationalists and Fascists. The Nationalists/rebels were higher up in society, being the Roman Catholics, military men, landowners, and businessmen. On the other hand, the Republicans/Fascist were the educated middle class, being the urban workers of the country. It was seen that the Nationalists were somewhat better compared to the Fascists because of the positions they held compared to the others.
The rebels continued their fighting, eventually leading to the capturing of major regions of Spain, such as the Canary Islands in July of 1936. The rebels capturing land and claiming it as their own lead to the retaliation of the Fascist party to do the same, leading each side to protect their land from atta...

... Carlos and the parliament monarchy. Their government is almost a democratic type of government and that is why these people can speak out against it and they are afraid that if the law is passed then they will, and other citizens of Spain, will not be allowed to have a voice in matters that are important to them, or that their opinion will not be looked at or taken seriously.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, tensions in Cuba were rapidly rising. The Cuban Ten Year’s War from 1868 to 1878 had sparked a fire for independence from Spain with the natives. In 1892, José Julián Martí y Pérez formed El Partido Revolucionario Cubano, or the Cuban Revolutionary party. The Cuban independence movement known as Ejército Libertador de Cuba began in February of 1895 with the motto, “Independencio o Muerte” (Independence or Death). Multiple minor battles between Cuba and Spain took place that year. (Library of Congress)

During the Napoleonic Wars, which took place in the early part of the nineteenth century, Spain was invaded in 1807. Napoleon forced King Ferdinand to abdicate the throne, which he gave to his brother Joseph Bonaparte. Many Spanish citizens welcomed the presence of the French in Spain because of the liberal reforms that they made, including a new liberal constitution. But with the rumor that the last member of the royal family was going to be removed from Madrid, the citizens of Madrid gathered in public squares on the night of May 2. At nine o'clock on the morning of the third, an uprising began. The citizens were armed with whatever they could find: scissors, knives, spoons, and a few firearms. The mob temporarily prevented the cart with the remaining members of the royal family from leaving. By mid-afternoon the revolt was...

Francisco Franco was an army general and dictator that ruled over Spain from 1939 until he died in 1975. He made his rise to dictatorship during the Spanish Civil War. Help from Germany and Italy set up his forces to overthrow the Second Republic. Adopting the title of “El Caudillo”, The Leader, Franco persecuted his political opponents and repressed the culture and language of Spain’s regions. He censured the media and took absolute control over the country. If it wasn’t for the lack of involvement in World War II, Franco’s dictatorship may have been brought down or not lasted until his death.
