It is in a diverse environment that I find myself growing the most. Diverse meaning an abundance in the difference in things such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, physical abilities, religious beliefs, or political beliefs. For instance, after reading what is now one of my favorite books, The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois, both introduced me to the concept of "double consciousness," but also to the idea that pursuit of knowledge, self- awareness, and authenticity, is an indispensable path into finding one’s self.
