It was in the late afternoon when Johnny B. Marciano woke up to the voice of a crying baby. He ran to the front door to see what was going on, only to find out that the world was in trouble. Marciano asks his neighbors that are outside crying and yelling about how the biggest nuclear bomb might go off because it has gotten in the wrong hands. A gang named “The Snakes” stole the bomb and is planning to blow up the northern part of the United States of America. Marciano is frustrated; he is an undercover federal agent who is an expert in nuclear bombs. Marciano knows how lethal the bomb is and knows what the nuclear bomb is capable of. He is very afraid, but he knows his mission at this point; he has to save his country and be the hero of his great nation. It was a tragic day for Johnny, even though he stayed focused and confident. When Marciano looked at profile of The Snakes, he found out that they were extremely violent, deadly, harmful, psychotic, and on the FBI’s most wanted list. They have a record of holding hostages, killing innocent people, robbing, arson, identity theft, hacking websites, stealing credit cards, and having large amounts of cocaine. Though this time, it is even worse; they have the United States on its knees with the stolen bomb. The people of the country are depending on the very brave men and women who are dedicated to recover the nuclear bomb and put the country back to rest. The Snakes have every intention of letting the bomb go off, but they want to make a trade with the Federal Government. They wanted to trade the bomb back for one-hundred million dollars. Marciano heard about what is going on; ever since he was a kid, he waited an opportunity to save the world, but never thought it wo... ... middle of paper ... ...ises. What fun, to explore a terrorist secret base. Johnny, although wounded, wanted to be the first one to explore the place from top to bottom. After opening the main underground entrance, low and behold: a nuclear bomb sitting there, with the speed-dial at two locations: the junkyard and the police station. The terrorists planned to launch the nuke to one of the two locations the same night. The police then disarmed the nuke and cremate it. Also found in the terrorist base was the personal information of all of the terrorists. After a long list of arrests, investigations, and criminal interviews, Johnny heard the truth about his parents… it was them, The Snakes. The Snakes killed his parents in the armed robbery. Johnny appeared during the mass-trial of The Snakes, and suggested a “special” prison location for The Snakes. They all now reside in Guantanamo Bay.

The black comedy follows the story of a paranoid U.S. Air Force Commander, General Ripper, who irrationally orders a group of patrol B-52 bombers to attack their targets in Russia. This character’s full name, Jack D. Ripper, is a parody of the notorious murderer of prostitutes, Jack The Ripper. The duration of the narrative involves the President and military personnel’s frantic effort to abort the attack. In conclusion, a single bomber follows through with the attack, triggering the detonation of Russia’s secret “Doomsday Device” and ending civilization.
If there is one thing on which critics agree when discussing this book, it is that Kotlowitz is a brilliant narrator. He has a keen eye for the daily particulars of this dangerous neighborhood. Adding to this strength is the fact that he spent years in one particular Chicago project, earning the trust of his informants. What ensues is a story that is told masterfully.
The Ugly American was written in 1958 and was meant to be an indictment on the U.S. government’s failures in foreign policy. The book provides valuable lessons that we can learn from today as special operators. I will use several stories and characters in this book and my own personal stories to explore if the Special Operatives (SO) Imperatives were applied and analyze if we as Special Operations Forces (SOF) are applying them well today. We, as SOF, should never be afraid of learning new principals or examining principals from the past to see if they are applicable. The Ugly American is a good example of a work from the past, even though it is fiction, which we can learn from today.

“But a kingdom that has once been destroyed can never come again into being; nor can the dead ever be brought back to life” Sun Tzu in The Art of War. The importance of this quote is that it points out how some actions in war can never be reversed. The point of history is not to undo the actions of the past but learn from them. One of the most influential events in history mankind must learn from is the dropping of the atomic bombs. The use of the atomic bomb has been argued over for two main reasons, the first reason is it arguably started the arms race with the Soviet Union and in turn the Cold War. The second reason is because of its inhuman effects which can be compared to that of a chemical weapon. A weapon like the atomic bomb cannot
