Wellness is a very important aspect when it comes to an individual’s health. The six dimensions of wellness consist of Social, Occupational, Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, and Emotional. It was developed to help people understand their overall wellness and health. They main goal is for everyone to be strong in all these dimensions.
Social is the dimension that focuses on the individual’s interactions and friendship with other people. Social wellness is important because it helps shape a community. The city of Marquette for example has strong social wellness. Marquette is a beautiful city with lots of friendly people. Since everyone here has such strong social wellness it creates a great place to live in. Detroit on the other hand has a weaker social wellness. I do not mean to bash Detroit, but it is not as friendly as the great city of Marquette. Majority of people in Detroit must have lower social wellness, which makes the city more dangerous to live in. Not everyone there will be willing to help you or become your friend, unlike Marquette. My social wellness is pretty good. I love meeting people and developing friendships. Social wellness in my life is very important because I see everyone as an equal. I will help others and my community whenever I am given the chance. Being socially active makes me happy and I hope others develop a strong social wellness much like I have.
Occupational wellness is ones attitude towards work. When an individual works it is complete importance to be happy. I never really go to church, which is bad since my family does. I currently have great physical wellness, but I really want to improve it. Since I am in ROTC and will eventually be an officer in the Army it is complete importance for me to be in the best shape possible. I really want to go to Ranger school and that requires being in the best physical shape possible. I am currently very strong in Emotional, Social, and Occupational wellness, and know I won’t need to focus on it too much. However, I am always looking to improve myself. My overall goal in life is to be happy with who I am, which I currently am. I work hard on my goals and usually achieve them. I also know my personal wellness is strong and plan on keeping it that way.
Myers & Sweeney (2008) states, the wheel of wellness is a model that is gear towards the individual’s well-being in which body, mind, and spirit are linked as one so that the client and professional can live life to the fullest within social and natural norms. In addition, resilience for professionals is to know how to cope and come out of a stressful situation without any kind of remorse. Furthermore, prevention is to prevent disastrous of one’s life. For example, an individual needs to re-evaluate his or her life on a daily basis. According to Venart & Pitcher 2007 [Myers & Sweeney (2005] states, Wellness is an aftermath and a system, a primary aspiration for existing, and a way of life.

Wellness is imperative to a healthy life. Sometimes, people do not really consider what makes up wellness, they simply think of it as being “well”. Wellness may be a state of being “well”, however, it incorporates different areas such as nutrition, health, safety, nurturing, and emotional stability. People must be healthy in all of these areas in order to achieve wellness. This is not an easy task for an adult, but definitely not for children.
The six dimensions of health are physical wellness, emotional wellness, intellectual wellness, spiritual wellness, interpersonal and social wellness, and environmental or planetary wellness. Out of these six dimensions my vigorous three would have to be emotional wellness, spiritual wellness, and interpersonal and social wellness. Not being in any particular order I am going to discuss why I feel these are my three strongest dimensions of health.

Many people think health is only about the physical state of your body. You can medically be in the best shape possible but if you are under a lot of stress, your mental health is compromised, which can lead to isolation from others, and now your social health is being neglected. It’s just one big cycle. Focusing on all components of good health such as eating a balanced diet for your physical, finding stress relievers for your mental and spending time with friends and family for social, is taking positive preventive measures to staying healthy. It is not only our responsibility, but a community effort to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve and maintain overall good health.
Physical, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, spiritual, and environmental wellness are all considered the six dimensions of wellness with occupational wellness being the possible seventh. But what are these exactly? And how do they apply to me and my health and wellness?
WHO, 1986 defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Therefore, it is viewed as much a social as a biological issue. "Healthy" is broadly used in the framework of “healthy environments” as to its impact on the benefit of humans.
I improve my overall wellness by ensuring I am staying connected to God through church, spiritual reading, praying and my accountability partner (spiritual). I also try to stay in good spirits by mentally and physically protecting my self-esteem and self worth. Any time I get negative feelings about myself I refocus my thinking. I also try to find the purpose of both good and bad situations I encounter. I believe everything happens for a reason but it is up to us to discover the purpose (emotional). I also love to work out and being in shape. Sometimes it get hectic with my work and school schedule but I am learning that every bit counts. I work out at least three times a week for 45 min and I am working on making eating a healthy life style (physical). I improve my social wellness by being a positive influence
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
It is important that employees do not fear for their jobs, are stressed of their tasks and their deadlines, etc. Employee happiness should be one of the most important topics for any organizations. If they are happy, they are more likely to focus on their own tasks, work hard, and create a good environment. If they are stressed they are more likely to make mistakes and influence the environment
Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
Social wellness is the ability for an individual to interact with people around them. I am a very social and outgoing person. Everyone that knows me, realizes that I talk a lot. I have very good communication skills with people. Anytime someone approaches me, I want to make them feel comfortable talking to me and carry on a conversation. I have many various friends that I have created meaningful bonds with. My roommate and a fellow teammate is from the same time as I am. Her and I were mere acquaintances back in high school. However, now that we have gotten in college, we are inseparable. She truly is one of my true best friends and I am very satisfied with the fact of how close our relationship is! According to the text, wellness is defined as an "integrated and dynamic level of functioning oriented toward maximizing potential, dependent on self-responsibility. " It involves both preventive health behaviors and a shift in thinking and attitude. Wellness is a lifelong promise to oneself of growth and achievement in each of the seven dimensions: emotional, spiritual, physical, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and social. It means a lifetime of ongoing change and always striving toward higher levels of healthy and successful living. This means, ultimately, that one must live a life that caters to each of those dimensions, both individually and collectively.
Emotional health includes a person who has full control of his emotions of himself as well as for those people around him and has developed self-confidence, trust within his peers and love that is unwavering in the midst of hardships. Intellectual health describes a person ability to reinforce his experiences through learnings. A socially healthy person is one who can forge strong bonds within his acquaintances and to be able to cope up the usual day-to-day drama. Spiritual wellness involves the strengthening of ones’ belief and at the same time being open to new beliefs. And a physically healthy person takes care of his body and practices healthy habits.
