The Singer by Calvin Miller is retelling of the story of Jesus. The Singer travels the land and tells how he is the son of Earthmaker. The singer is Jesus and Earthmaker is God. He sings the Ancient Star Song that states that the Singer is the son of the Earthmaker. He gains many followers and critics, but he sings the same song. The World Hater is the Devil. He tempts the Singer in the dessert and the Singer sees the World Hater in many people. The Singer dies on the death machine because people do not believe in him. Just like Jesus the Singer is resurrected proving he is the son of the Earthmaker. The Singer is a well done modern depiction of Jesus because it pulls descriptions of Jesus from all four Gospels. Calvin Miller draws a lot of inspiration for The Singer from the Gospel of Luke. The Singer is a man for all people. The Singer talks to prostitutes, crippled little girls, and madmen. These outcasts are the Singers greatest followers. The Singer sees the World Hater in the outsiders, but the Singer drives him away. The prostitute is reformed, the little girl’s foot is healed, …show more content…
The Singer is portrayed as the word of the Father-Spirit also known as Earthmaker. Father-Spirit says to the Singer, “Sing my Ancient Star Song to the world.” This shows that the Singer is the word of the Earthmaker. Jesus is the word incarnate and so is the singer. John can also be seen in the Singer because the book is a poem. John’s Gospel is very poetic; he calls Jesus things like “King of Kings” or “The Good Shepard”. The Singer is a very poetic name and his other name, the troubadour is also poetic. These names imply that he is singing the good news of the Father-Spirit. The Singer is also portrayed as a prophet. He sings the Earthmakers song and spreads his song. The Gospel of John can be seen in The Singer because the Singer is the Father-Spirit’s words made flesh and because both books are very
In the short story "Cornet at night" by Sinclair Ross, Tom goes to town and finds a cornet player named Phillip. Phillip is the man that Tom choose from the town to bring back to the farm to stook. In many ways, Phillip is the Jesus symbol in the story. Jesus is the religious symbol of Christianity and God appointed him to aid all the world's people. However, Jesus was banished and sentenced to death and ironically killed by the very people that he came here to save. In the same way so was Phillip.
“Fire away. Take your best shot, show me what you got. Honey I’m not afraid (Chris, Lines 4-5)…” Strength, love, heartache, all words that many people can identify with, but what about mental illness, depression, and suicide. These words are those that humans avoid, pretend they are not there, but in reality those three words effect many more people that was ever thought possible. Over 18.2% of United States citizens suffer from a mental illness (Depression), 6.7% of United States citizens suffer from depression (Depression), and each year in the United States there are on average 42,773 deaths by suicide (American). Now, many people can relate to the words love and heartbreak, but many more can identify with the three words that the world
Two plays, twenty years apart helped to depict two very important periods in African American history. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, premiered in 1984, and Dutchman premiered in 1964 help to show the development of the black mind set in certain periods of history. Dutchman, written during the black arts period (1960-1975); helped to show how African Americans constantly fought to escape the classic stereotypes that they were associated with. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, written for the Contemporary Period, told the story of how first generation black people after the signing of the emancipation proclamation, fought to find their identity, not only as black people but also religiously.

...erself expanded gospel’s exposure when she appeared twice on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Meanwhile, television producer Bobby Jones reaches four and a half million viewers each week with his BET program, “Gospel Explosion.” However, the test for Gospel music reflects one that all Christian musicians must wrestle with: Can Gospel continue to increase its fortune in the mainstream marketplace while still maintaining its spiritual base? Despite what you believe the answer to be, African American Religious music will continually evolve. Since Thomas Dorsey first stretched the boundaries to create gospel music, choirs, quartets, and power vocalists have been singing the same song, albeit in different styles and places. As African American religious music continues to grow beyond even Dorsey’s expectations, one can only hope that it will be embraced regardless of how it is labeled by everyone who needs to be reminded of the good news it represents.
Richard Miller stated, “Is it possible to produce writing that generates a greater sense of connection to the world and its inhabitants?” (441). In his essay, “The Dark Night of the Soul”, Miller brought up the preceding question. Miller tries to understand the reasoning and value for reading and writing in education and whether it is still relevant in today’s world. He tries to investigate his question by introducing the Columbine shooting and four other literature pieces. Because of the violence, depression, and hopelessness displayed in three of these essays, he really begins to question if the literary arts are really valuable or is there becoming a disconnection in reading and writing? The pieces also make him think that institutions of higher learning should teach the literary arts differently. Although most of these works showed only depression, there was one work that gave him hope which was The Liars’ Club, a memoir by Mary Karr.
Johnny Cash can be considered one of the best country artists of all times, but the soul of his music is rooted in the blues. Many of Cash’s songs are about the complications that come with love. The four songs listed above are only a few parts of the story Cash teaches us about the world of love. Most importantly, Cash does a wonderful job of explaining the complicated nature of love and how it really is the most powerful force in the world. Before diving into each of these songs, one must first understand how Cash is a blues artist just as much as he is a country artist.
In the gospels of Mark and John, both showed a vivid portrait of Jesus in their writing. Mark’s gospel describes much more of Jesus' life, miracles, and parables as suffering servant. However, John’s gospel was written to convince people to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Nonetheless, both John and Mark present many of the crucial events of Jesus' life, including his trial, crucifixion, and resurrection.
They were part of a big musical family, which was an inspiration that pushed them to begin performing. The family went through tough times but was able to overcome them through their faith in God. When Luke and Joel began writing music together, they never imagined of becoming so successful. They gave all their success and glory to God, the one who made it all possible. Through God, they were able to create music that expressed their emotions and lifted the spirits of others.
The first few lines, “His hunger satisfied and soul quenched / He turned to the lamb on the cross” describe the satisfaction of living life through Jesus Christ. Jesus said he is the spring of eternal life and that those whom drink of the spring shall not thirst. Thus the first line represents the man’s spiritual satisfaction. The lamb in the second line is a common symbol in Christianity and it represents sacrifice. Thus Jesus sacrificed himself to save us. The man in the poem is then saved through Christ and he turns toward him in both the good and bad times. The final couple lines in the poem, “And praising the grace bestowed on him / He saw the dove ascend into the sky” demonstrates the movement of the Holy Spirit. The third line of the stanza shows how thankful the man is and that he does not take his salvation for granted. Due to this he prays and spreads the word of Christ. It then continues to spread all throughout the world. The dove the man “saw ascend into the sky” is another fairly common symbol in Christianity. It represents the Holy Spirit. Thus by seeing it ascend into the sky he sees the Holy Spirit being spread all throughout the

Jesus' teachings are so immense, that they impact the life of many who are in the wrong path. Both, the parable of Luke, and the poem of Bishop, teaches that anyone can be saved as long as we repent and allow ourselves to accept our Lord into our hearts. Both story and poem provide significance symbolism that allows the reader to reflect on our own lives, especially those who are living through difficult times. Symbolism can have a great impact and a true meaning to an individuals' life. Likewise, I truly believe that Jesus works in many ways to help those who are facing difficult times in there life, those who are lost without guidance, just like Bishop once did but the parable of "The Prodigal Son" gave her life hope and savior, therefore, allowing her to rewrite her own version through her own eyes and
Much like the other Gospels, the book of John is anonymous. In addition, it is believed that this book was the last to be written and the only Gospel to spiritualize Jesus (Harris, 2014). In reading and comprehending the gospel according to John, one must read it differently and think about it in different terms, as opposed to the synoptic Gospels. Within the composition of John, there are several events and teachings that separate it from the other Gospels. Some of the events and teachings include John’s omission of Jesus birth, baptism, temptation by Satan, exorcisms, teachings in parables, his reinterpretations of the Mosaic Law, Jerusalem’s fall and the apocalyptic prophecies of Jesus Second Coming (Harris, 2014).
Some of Utah Phillips's music starts with an introduction to a story. Then the story transitions to song and every once and awhile it will break the musical tune to continue the story in a storytelling style and then break back into song. Utah Phillips isn't as well know for his voice as he was for his writing. In many cases, he will sing with another folk singer like Ani DiFranco. He is also a storyteller telling stories of his experiences without the help of musical tune
