“Fire away. Take your best shot, show me what you got. Honey I’m not afraid (Chris, Lines 4-5)…” Strength, love, heartache, all words that many people can identify with, but what about mental illness, depression, and suicide. These words are those that humans avoid, pretend they are not there, but in reality those three words effect many more people that was ever thought possible. Over 18.2% of United States citizens suffer from a mental illness (Depression), 6.7% of United States citizens suffer from depression (Depression), and each year in the United States there are on average 42,773 deaths by suicide (American). Now, many people can relate to the words love and heartbreak, but many more can identify with the three words that the world …show more content…
Chris Stapleton’s music video for his song, “Fire Away,” is one that grabs those forgotten words by the horns and shows everyone who watches the effect of them on not only those suffering from the illness, but the people closest to …show more content…
As audiences watch “Fire Away,” even for just a moment, those words become an issue, those words are going through their mind and make them aware of what they can cause. The kairos of this video is very important to Stapleton, not only was this video a huge success in the music industry, but it was Stapleton’s very first music video ever released. Having such a hard pressed subject as his first video, brings kairos into a new light, as the video had great success. Kairos, meaning timing, could not be more appropriate for this song, as the timing of the song and video was able to blast Stapleton into the country music history books, as being not only an amazing singer, but being someone who is unafraid to take risks and bring country music back to its roots. Many things in this video make an audience feel cheerful, the happiness of the couple in the beginning and seeing their life begin to unfold. Many things in the video make the audience sorrowful, the many attempts of suicide and the heartbreak when the battle is lost. Many scenes in the video can make the audience feel a sense of fight, the light at the end of every bad scene and the unwavering faith of the man, through every situation that was thrown his way. Through the use of pathos, this video was able to make its audience of all different people, relate and connect with the
“Oh, mirror in the sky/What is love?” A question many ask when involved in a difficult relationship. “Landslide”, a song written by Stevie Nicks is one that resonates and sends a powerful message to anyone who hears it. This song represents change, love lost, and the feeling of life crashing down around you, ultimately becoming a landslide. Nicks is able to use ethos, pathos, and logos to really connect with her audience, which is one of the reasons this song is so meaningful, though it was not the most popular right away.
Across the world, there are thousands upon millions of people who suffer from depression. Upon the numerous sufferers,
But I also feel very privileged now, realizing how well my family life turned out. This memoir helped remind me how I want to reach out and help others in any way I can, because everyone has hard times and rough patches, I believe it depends how you react to them. Even though I had bumps in the road with my family, I got through it and nothing ever traumatic happened. But he had bumps in the road when he was very young, and also had to deal with traumatic events. Fire Shut Up in My Bones opened my eyes more and showed me how privileged and lucky I am to have my family beside me. Blow’s experiences differed compared to my childhood with meek similarities. We each have a different backstory that makes us who we are, so in the end we all will have a different personality and different view of life. “A heart still works even when it breaks.” (Blow, 2014,
Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Not a role model but hope of continuing my dreams because rappers successfully made it. “For what’s money without happiness, or hard times without the people you love” is from a song called “Love Yourz” by J. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. Cole’s messages in these two songs are relative because I too, have had several issues with my mother and father creating a sense of lonesome. Hearing music like Coles helped me overcome my
When artists go through an emotional down fall in there career’s you see some stars fall and other’s reflect to back when it all started to better themselves. As Katy Perry stated in her interview with U.S.A Today Prism is “less over-the-top and more “me””. I have come to realize that when artist put out an album, it isn’t just to see how many copies they can sell but it’s about making music with feelings, getting into there inner self and reaching out to those who admire them, the social text of the music is the heart of every song and the album altogether. A lot of the time artist will write about their emotions but never really behind the sense of what occurred. Here I will take two artists and break down there trails and show how they made them into triumphs through the context of there music. I will describe how these artist were able to create pieces of music that took over a particular emotion and were able to get it’s point across to the listener. These artists will be Katy Perry, and Britney Spears.
For generations, singers and songwriters of country music have been working to evoke emotions in listeners by performing and writing songs that the listeners will be able to relate to. Country music traditionally reveals stories of life, love, death, and values, all of which can be seen in the works of great singers and songwriters like George Strait, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and Alan Jackson. One artist in particular, Garth Brooks, forever left his stamp on country music and on the hearts of his millions of listeners with his hit songs, “The Beaches of Cheyenne”, “Callin’ Baton Rouge”, and “The River”. “The Beaches of Cheyenne” has a storyline containing themes of life, death, love, and regret. The themes of this song branch out much further than the reaches of country music, and makes this particular song relatable to each and every person. "The Beaches of Cheyenne" by Garth Brooks is the epitome of country music, and largely contributes to the success and popularity of country music by evoking emotions in listeners through means of a storyline that conveys strong emotions, relatable to each and every person. “Callin’ Baton Rouge” is fast-paced, upbeat love song that is able to evoke emotion in listeners because of the strong instrumentals in the song accompanied by meaningful lyrics. “The River” is a song about following dreams no matter what obstacles may be in the way, which makes it inspirational and very relatable to everyone that listens to it.
The songs “Stronger”, “Remember the Name”, and “I’ll Show You” all go along with a big theme in my life. Since I had surgery a big saying in my life has been, “always be bigger, better, faster, and stronger.” As I have started to recover, I remind myself everyday to do my exercises. Even though I hate doing them, I know that they make me stronger than I was the day before. It may be painful some days, but I know that if I continue to work hard and show people that I can get through this they will remember my name. Not because I’m the girl who got injured, but because I’m the girl who got injured and came back bigger, better, faster, and stronger than ever before.
Beginning with the lyrics in the opening scene of “We Found Love”, a female voice speaking about being in a domestic violence situation and the difficulty she is having deciding between staying with her partner or leaving. The statements; “you almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important, that without them you feel like nothing,” and “when its over, you almost wish you could have all that bad stuff back, just so you could have the good” (We Found Love, 2011) depict the power that the man has over this woman, even in situations where she is being victimized. This theme continues throughout the music video as the male character is se...
Mental health is an issue that has been bombarded with unanswered questions and cursed with a social stigma. Throughout history this has created a social divide between mental health issues and the mainstream media. This disparity doesn’t only create a social separation, but a lapse in ethics, making it tolerable to look down on people in the mental health community. Historically, patients have been placed or forced into mental institutions in order to “cure” them of their mental obscurity so that they can function normally in the society, yet for centuries this has proven to be an ongoing struggle for the mental health community. With all of the new advancements in medicine and our ability to cure more physical and mental ailments than
Almost every day we hear about someone attempting or committing suicide. Whether it is on the internet, television, newspaper, or even by word, suicide is a harsh reality that is overlooked and undermined. According to one online article, “Teen Suicide Statistics,”
Recently, a popular TV series “13 Reasons Why,” raised the awareness of suicide and mental health. Suicide and mental health are big deals, since suicide is the “second leading cause of death for ages 12-24,” according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (“Suicide Statistics”). People attempt suicide for various reasons, and mental illness is a significant factor. Consequently, risk factors such as chemical imbalance in the brain, genetic vulnerability, environmental factors, and family relationship intertwine and cause mental illness. Among those mental illnesses, depression is one of the most common and heavily associated with suicide. Depression is difficult to identify among the young people because the symptoms are easily
So with this the number for mental health and suicide is much higher then what is reported. Mental health is a worldwide issue that no one understands and an issue that In the article Issues and Controversies says, "Throughout most of human history, people with mental illness were ostracized, isolated, and persecuted. " ( Infobase,1) This belief system can give causation of mental illness in different cultures and such influences in a community will always be in a negative manner. Various societies struggle with the notion of mental health.
“Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain” (I-10). Ending a life is a big step in the wrong direction for most. Suicide is the killing of oneself. Suicide happens every day, and every day a family’s life changes. Something needs to be done to raise awareness of that startling fact.
Using music in heavily cathartic, self-healing ways is no new concept for Phil Elverum, but his 2017 release A Crow Looked at Me took this part of him to the next level. It didn’t hold back from delving into every crushing detail of the loss of his wife and its detriment on his emotional health. This level of honesty is something I expect to hear more in art, but artists tend to dance around the topic or water down their pain since it tends to feel like a private thing to so many people. But delivering the devastating facts about dealing with something as life-shattering as this is a rarely genuine moment and comes across as more relatable than the artist might expect, making a project like this one to pay close attention to.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
