The hunger games take place in Panem, a dystopian society what was once North America. The capitol is a technologically advanced utopian city where the nation’s wealthiest and most powerful citizens live. The Country of Panem is divided into 12 districts and the capitol, Panem maintains its hold over the 12 districts by forcing them to choose a boy and a girl also known as tributes in the nationally televised event known as the Hunger Games. All the citizens must watch as the youths fight each other to death until only one of them remains.
Five current societal issues/problems presented in the Hunger Games:
1. Poverty
2. Government Oppression
3. Class Status
4. Violence
5. Techno-dependence (Television, cell phones, etc.)

Five current societal issues we’re facing that was presented in the book is poverty, government issues, class/economic status, violence, and techno-dependence.
1. Poverty: According to the Census Bureau, 45 million Americans are living under the poverty line. During the 2017 election Hillary Clinton said, “My primary mission as president will be to create more opportunity and more good jobs with rising wages right here in the United States.” During the elections, President Trump also talked about poverty and how he will be bringing up the minimum wage.
2. Government oppression: One way the US falls into the government oppression category is through the black lives matter movement and police brutality. Jill Stein tweeted, "Training police in the style of Israeli Defense Forces must end if we'd like to move away from occupation-style policing. #BlackLivesMatter."
