Change is inevitable. Change is everywhere. Some change causes advancement. Chivalry today has changed immensely from when the code was first written. In the modern world where technology and independence are striving has had an effect on the way we see chivalry. Some say chivalry is not necessary anymore, that it is a thing of the past. “Chivalry certainly isn’t dead. The popularized version might be” (Negroni). Chivalry is needed, and always will be. Revisions might be formed as time passes but chivalry will never be worthless or a thing of the past. These codes are the basis of how people should act on a daily basis. If society was to discard chivalrous behavior the world as we know it would be forever changed.

The definition of chivalry has changed immensely over the years. Even the simple gestures such as opening doors for someone are becoming a thing of the past, mostly for the fact that women are doing more on their own, not wanting a man to do it for them. Gerry Ellen says, “some women absolutely do not want a man to cater her needs, as it is a sign of weakness in women.” Modern chivalry is the balance of knowing what a woman wants to do and what she expects a man to do for her. Cheryl Lavin wrote for the Chicago Tribune, “I hold as many doors for men as they do for me.” Modern chivalry has to take into account that chivalry is not just for men but women as well. It does not stop with just opening doors, it includes any chivalrous deed. The problem is, it all depends on the situation. Some women today might not expect, or want a man to be overly chivalrous towards her because they are colleagues. A Chicago Tribune article states, “ I work hard every day, competing with the men in my office. I have actively discouraged the men from opening doors for me.” That is why a modernized version of chivalry is essential. What is expected has transformed over the years. Good people are seen less and less today. People do not start relationships for the right reasons. A good person is a broad term. Not many men even know what is expected of them. If fifty women were asked what their definition of a gentleman was there would be fifty different answers. An article on modern chivalry mentioned, “Medieval literature is responsible for fostering our concept of being a gentleman.” Which then leads many men to be confused on what they think they should do. Bringing chivalry back into society will help spell out the standard of expectations. Relationships have gone from finding a good person to spend time with and seeing them in the future to settling.
