A famous french philosopher named Michel Onfray said, “you cannot kill a breeze, a wind, a fragrance; you cannot kill a dream or an ambition”. The Lost City of Z conveys how ambition can change a person’s view towards the outside world by separating them from the world. Fawcett was on the journey to find the answer to the disappearance of the lost city. He tried his hardest, but suddenly disappeared in the Amazon. His ambition led to future Fawcett freaks. Many of the freaks went to complete Fawcett’s goal, but a lot had terrible fates. Grann was one of those Fawcett freaks, but had successfully completed his expedition to find the answer to the existence of El Dorado. World barriers can be described as mountains, forests, and the seas. It shows how many people go in great depths for their ambition to find the answers to Z and Fawcett. Going into these depths can slowly isolate them from the world. “Despite cutting, chopping, and pushing through from morning till night… their legs stuck in mud... Their shoes disintegrated”. These snippets of quotes shows the fierce environment Fawcett, Grann, and whoever else was obsessed with Z went through. It visually shows us that there were muddy grounds where people can get stuck as well as that you can visualize a very dense forest. Since there weren’t many humans but the natives in the forest, the explorers had to cut their own road. This would have been a gruesome task and staying in the Amazon without outside contact can change your personality. The setting also had hostile natives, which because of explorers being a different race from the natives, this can lead the the explorer to be captured and killed. This was another element that men like Fawcett and Grann had to notice and avoid to find Z. Risking their lives and perhaps, maybe even adapting to the hostile and rough area. With weeks passing while living in this environment, the explorers will slowly cut strings with the outside world. Most of the men described in the book all tried to complete the journey because of their ambition to find Z,
