Depending on how you look at Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride, Timson calls it an 'upmarket melodrama'; whereas Martin refers to it as a novel
'confronting politically correct feminism';. The truth is it isn't either of these. While some of the situations are greatly exaggerated, this book comments on the way that women interact with each other on a day-to-day basis. Atwood tells the story of three women, and how they are drawn together because they have all been double-crossed by a mutual female friend, Zenia. These characters seem so real that in some cases they are reminiscent of actual acquaintances. The male characters in
The Robber Bride, however, are dull and lifeless. We never get to know any of them in great detail. On the other hand, Atwood does a wonderful job of describing the setting, which really allows the reader become more involved in the story.
The main message in this novel is that women have drastically different relationships with each other than they do with men. Not being a woman myself makes it difficult for me to determine if this message is true, but nonetheless, Atwood does have a lot to say about the way females deal with each other. The character Roz constantly runs into problems in the business world. 'It's complicated, being a woman boss. Women don't look at you and think Boss. They look at you and think Woman, as in Just another one, like me, and where does she get off?';
The female characters do not 'come across as more emblematic than real.'; as Timson suggests. Charis decides how her day is going to be by swinging a crystal above her head. This behavior reminds me of an acquaintance who once tried to lecture me on the power of 'crystal vibrations'. This may be because Atwood's characters are stereotypes and everyone is bound to know someone like them. However, this realism provides common ground between the reader and the novel, which makes it easier to read.
As Male characters in The Robber Bride are very poor and have absolutely no depth. Or as Timson put it '…and male characters who, it can be argued, are uniformly portrayed as so hapless, brutal or pathetic you could forgive them for forming a support group, leaping off the page and tearing the author from limb to limb.'; Their only purpose is to serve as vehicles for the female characters to injure each other. The Hero Journey undergoes different points in someone’s life. In 1949 a man named Joseph Campbell shared Mythic and Archetypal principals with the world. Christopher Vogler fulfilled all of the Hero Journey steps. In the Princess Bride film directed by Robert Reiner is based on the book written by William Goldman. In the film Westley the farm boy leaves the farm, and goes on an adventure to provide for his true love. Westley is a Campbellion a Hero because the story has Mythic and Archetypal principals and follows most of the twelve stages of the Hero Journey.Westley begins his Hero Journey with a call to adventure out of his ordinary world.Westley is a farm boy, who works for a beautiful girl named Buttercup. The author of the book The Princess Bride is William Goldman. Goldman was born August 12, 1931 in Chicago, Illionis, U.S. Goldman is a novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He got his BA degree at Oberlin College in 1952 and his MA degree at Columbia University in 1956. William Goldman had published five novels and had three plays produced on Broadway prior to writing his screenplays. Two of his notable works include his novel Marathon Man and comedy-fantasy novel The Princess Bride, both of which Goldman converted to film. William Goldman has been an influence to other authors such as: Stephanie Meyer, Dean Koontz, and Joesph Finder. People who were an influence to Goldman were: Irwin Shaw, Ingmar Bergman, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The princess bride is an incredibly entertaining book. Although it was written mostly as a parody it contains many themes. The developments seen in the dynamic characters are astounding ones. The theme, or motif, which I'm going to follow through the story is that of Fezzik and his quest for self confidence and a good self image. From the time that the novel starts to the end, Fezzik achieves a good self image. He starts out with a very low self image and, by the end, he finds in himself talents that give him a better image of himself.

Notably, both Grimm and Jacobs use the verb “dragging” to describe the bridegroom’s treatment of the maiden. In keeping with the class shift from Grimm’s text, Mr. Fox uses a more extravagant weapon (a sword instead of an axe) to remove the maiden’s hand. This hand has a diamond ring, not a gold one, symbolically strengthening the link between death and marriage. “The Bridegroom” by Ha Jin, is a short story about a man struggling with homosexuality in modern day China. The narrator, Old Chang, is the non-biological father of a young woman named Beina. Old Change promised to take care of Beina after her father, a close family friend, passed away. Beina then gets married to a very handsome man named Huang Baowen. Baowen quickly becomes the focus of this story. The climax of this short story is Baowen being revealed as a homosexual. This short story highlights Jin’s theme of homosexuality and shows the internal and external struggles of both Baowen and Old Cheng, through first person narrative, setting, and emotional appeal.
Satire with a funny twist. In the novel The Princess Bride, William Goldman satirizes both fairy tales and the standard literary process through his characters and their actions. Westley, a poor farmer, falls in love with the far from perfect maiden, Buttercup, but has to sail away in order to find his fortunes. Years later, Buttercup, thinking that Westley abandoned her, is forcibly engaged to Prince Humperdinck, a cruel and calculating man. Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo, three mysterious kidnappers, abduct the princess in hopes of causing war between the great nations of Guilder and Florin. These events and characters mirror those in a common fairy tale, but with many twists to them. The author, William Goldman, uses both his role as the editor and writer to bring the fairy tale to new light, in order to ridicule the traditional literary structure. He is not actually editing his own novel, in fact he is intentionally including annotations that perhaps would normally be part of an editing process, but are included in The Princess Bride to mock tropes of other fairy tales and the literary process as a whole. Through the portrayal of his characters as archetypes and their flaws, in addition to his unorthodox writing style which allows his to annotate directly in the novel, Goldman satirizes both the literary process and the standard fairy tale.
This research paper will take a symbolic interactionist perspective to contrast the different leadership prejudices of men and women in the workplace. The age-old debate of inequality for women in executive position will now be examined through online periodicals that show gender stereotypes in the workforce, different strategies men and women use to break the glass ceiling of the workplace, a focus on the interactions and reactions of a male Chief Executive Officer (CEO) versus a female CEO, leadership prejudices among women and women, and various studies regarding leadership of men and women. Because of stereotyping, very little focus is on men within the workplace. However, research shows that male workers face stereotyping as well as women. Therefore, a concentration on this matter will be focused within this paper. The paper concludes that both men and women face stereotypes that hinder, to some extent, their balance of work and family lives. Contrary to some stereotypes, women are proven to have just as powerful executive leadership qualities as men (Hackbarth, 2012).
I was almost instantaneously exposed to the fact that someone will always have power over me whether it be my boss, manager, or supervisor. They were dominant and I was subordinate and that is just how the system works. Tatum (2000) describes, “People pay attention to those who control their outcomes. In an effort to predict and possibly influence what is going to happen to them, people gather information about those in power” (p. 12). As an attempt to move up the ladder, I had to observe and also please the boss with my work ethic. However, I also discovered that just because I worked hard, did not mean I would be rewarded, I no longer had control over me, my boss did. At Sportsman’s Pizzeria, women were more privileged than the men. We were promoted more quickly, given raises faster, and the boss was even more polite to us. The men did heavy lifting jobs and were often ridiculed and even taunted. Stereotypes were set in place, girls stayed in the kitchen while only the boys were capable of handling the heavy, physical work. In this situation, I was lucky to be given the opportunities to be paid more based on my gender, but at the same time I fell into the stereotypes and they continued to define me for the rest of my career at the pizza
A young girl growing up in 21st century America has a much better chance of achieving a high-paying, high-prestige, management level job than most all of her predecessors in the early, middle and late 20th century. Despite this, however, women who have such a position, depending on the field of course, are likely to find themselves as the token woman among men, which puts her in a tricky position (Conley 311). A woman that asserts herself in a way seen as “masculine” would likely be negatively received by her male counterparts, making her job harder than it would be without such pressures (Conley 311). Should the woman fail at coping with this and fail at some aspect of her job, it becomes ammunition for her aggrieved male coworkers who see this as justification that women cannot handle such positions (Conley 311).
Women have historically been submissive to men and with this, it may also be recalled that the perception of one also plays a major role in how that individual is treated by society. The inequalities present between men and women will be further discussed in this essay in respects to the gender discrimination which exist in the workforce.
Certainly, women at work today are not treated as equals with men, but there is an upward trend of progress being made. With pioneering and persistent women alongside lobbying women's groups, and forward thinking corporations, there is hope that one day gender won't matter at work.
This is not about being nasty or nice – it is entirely about being achievement oriented by focusing on performance and organizational goals. Being achievement oriented, leaders have to recognize that they have to be mindful of and accountable for the choices they make because they are setting the model of what’s appropriate and inappropriate. Words matter, they are as much a form of expression for leaders as they are to poets, singers, and writers. According to Posner and Kouzes(p. 59) to be a leader, you got to awaken to the fact that you don’t have to copy someone else or follow a script and you don’t have to wear someone else’s style. Currently, there are an increasing number of women who are in leadership roles in the workplaces. It is a generally accepted as true that woman are supposed to use feminine ways of doing leadership. However, this is not always true. In some cases, women also use masculine ways of leadership. In addressing the issue of stereotyping in the workplace, women should continue to stand their ground. Having a backbone in a male dominant occupation is the most important way to make everyone overlook the fact that there are women working in male dominant jobs and that will not stop them from continuing.
