The Rise of the Byzantine Empire
"What were some of the accomplishments of the Byzantine Empire?" Questions such as this one appear on the margins of sixth and seventh grade textbooks. What a better way of starting a new lesson or chapter than with questions that will automatically led the student to think about the answer? That is the case in the lesson of "The Rise of the Byzantine Empire." Being that the lesson I revised was only a brief part of the chapter, it was interesting to see how precise the lesson on the Rise of the Empire came about. There was nothing wrong with the format and structure of the lesson. When I fist glanced at the lesson I had received, I became very mortified to see that the lesson only consisted of 4 pages. Can the lesson on the rise of the Byzantine Empire really be described in 4 pages? I would not know that answer, unless I read the lesson, and did further research on the topic. Surprisingly, I discovered that the lesson is pretty much accurate, although it does not have much detail. Perhaps the detail is not very rich, because this lesson, (which is titled to be lesson 3) is a continuation of the study on Rome; it's emperors, etc. It is not to say that the lesson did not have weaknesses, however, it had both its strengths, and its weaknesses.
Lesson 3, which is titled "The Rise of the Byzantine Empire," includes a timeline of the dates the certain lesson covers. In this case, the dates are from 532 A.D., to1453 A.D. Byzantium saw itself as the true descendent of Rome. In Byzanium many of the elements of Rome's cosmopolitan Mediterranean civilization continue. Gradually however, Greek replaces Latin as the primary language in both society and government, and distinctive social, political and cultural traditions emerge. The central figure in the revival of the power of Byzantium is the Emperor Justinian, from 527 to 565. The lesson was mainly focused on "the Byzantine Emperor Justinian." As the lesson starts, the story of how Justinian came about restoring order in the city of Constantinople is told in a brief summary of about 2 paragraphs. "Fights broke out between the rival groups, and the fighting escalated into rioting in Constantinople's streets. The rioting continued for a week while Justinian and Theodora, safe within their palace, debated whether to flee or to attempt to restore order.
Two of the most powerful powers in the post-classical period were the Arabian and Byzantine empires. Each had different political, religious, and economic differences that defined their respective cultures, and managing to create vast empires that greatly rivaled each other.
Did Justinian impact life as we know it because he is such a great ruler, or is he just a follower who keeps trying to hold on to the loose threads of a fallen empire? Some might say that without Justinian, humanity is a step further back. Others may argue evermore that Justinian is a two-faced liar who you cannot trust (Doc. 2). Contrary to many beliefs, Justinian creates a new Byzantine Empire after the fall of Rome that is influential to many different cultures, more advanced and educated than Rome, and more economically thriving than the Roman Empire.
Aspects of Byzantine historiography are that historical works are in the forms of chronicles of events that revolved around individuals with unique characteristics. The focus of an individual is clearly shown as Emperor Alexis Comnena I is in a way the protagonist of the Alexiad as he is the central character throughout the story. Emperor Comnena, throughout the book is shown to be a figure with no vices and is even comparable to Jesus Christ himself. The book, while bias can yield a lot of information to historians. The information that can be gained is Eastern Roman history under Emperor Alexis Comnena I and what transpired under his reign. The Byzantine perspective of the First Crusade and the incoming crusaders is also displayed by the Alexiad, therefore can yield useful information to historians exploring the First Crusade or something similar. The problem is using the Alexiad as source in understanding Eastern Roman history is that the book was wrote with a bias bent, therefore some parts history may have been tampered with and that Anna Comnena is telling her story purely though stories and her family history with no other sources. However, while flawed in some aspects the Alexiad is still regarded as a historical piece and relay important information is analyzed

Much of past civilizations have endured many failures and triumphs throughout their existence. In the third century, there were many civilizations that started to flourish. One of these civilizations that started to expand was the Byzantine civilization. The Byzantine civilization, also regarded as Byzantium, was part of the Roman Empire which was divided in 395 AD. Byzantium had shared the same attitude, as the Roman Empire, toward exercising its authority over its citizens and throughout its empire. The Islamic civilization had started thrive in the fifth century. The Islamic civilization was unified together as unison by Islam and it has expanded its civilization throughout parts of Europe through jihad. Because of their expansions throughout parts of Europe, they shared various similarities which include their political system, social structure, and economy.

After being diagnosed with her terrible illness, she sought out a way to end her suffering before it even started. When Adkins heard of Kevorkian’s machine, she instantly saw her way out of this world. She contacted him and went through with the procedure inside of Kevorkian’s van in a public park. Within five minutes of beginning the procedure, Adkins died of heart failure. As this news was leaked to media outlets, Jack Kevorkian became not only a celebrity, but a murderer as well. He was charged with Adkins’s murder by the State of Michigan. However, the case was later dismissed due to Michigan’s unclear stance on assisted suicides (Jack). Cases such as these, while being under totally different circumstances, have been going well before assisted suicide was made infamous by Doctor Jack Kevorkian. People and situations such as these are the reason that many people contemplate assisted suicide in the first place. Stricter laws need to be put in place in order to prevent another “Kevorkian” situation. Human life is too valuable to be eradicated by a machine built in someone’s garage. Although in some instances the decision on whether or not to commit suicide is fairly black and white, a more in depth analysis of the afflicted patient’s mind needs to be taken into consideration for one to truly understand what is
