After talks with her husband, sons, minister, and local doctors; Janet Adkins decided she didn¹t want to undergo the sustained mental deterioration that Alzheimer¹s Disease caused (Uhlman 111). She began to realize she had the disease when she started forgetting songs and failed to recognize notes as she played the piano (Filene 188). ³She read in Newsweek about Dr. Jack Kevorkian and his ŒMercitron¹ machine, then saw him on the ŒDonahue¹ Television show² (Filene 188). With her husband¹s consent but objections by sons and doctors, she telephoned him to arrange to kill herself (Filene 188). She still had a life expectancy of at least ten years with the illness, but she wished to die. She wanted to die before the disease robbed her of her competence (Larson 229). Kevorkian later killed Adkins and faced the consequences boldly (Hendin, ³Suicide in America² 247). The background, process, and effects of Dr. Kevorkian¹s questionable first patient, Janet Adkins, have a very detailed story in them.
	Janet Adkins led a very productive life up to and even after she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer¹s, but she couldn¹t handle losing control of her brain (Filene 188). She was 54 years old and lived in a wealthy Oregon suburb with her stock broker husband, Ron. She was also the mother of three sons, taught English and piano, went hang gliding, trekked in Nepal, climbed Mount Hood, and generally behaved with a lot of energy (Gutmann 20). She and her husband were longtime Hemlock society members, which advocates Euthanasia in some cases (Betzold 22). ³Doctors at a Portland hospital told her that eventually she would be dependent on her husband for feeding and bathing² (Gutmann 21). She did not want to take her own life in case she messed it up, and her own doctors wouldn¹t help her (Hendin , ³Seduced by Death² 132). Though she was still able to carry on clear conversations and demolish her son at tennis; her husband explained that if she was going to go, she¹d probably want to go to soon rather than to late (Gutmann 21). After hearing about Kevorkian, Ron Adkins contacted him to employ his services (Wolfson 56). Her husband complained to Dr. Kevorkian that he had to remind her of the times of her tennis lessons, and that she kept leaving her purse in the house. Lincoln Electrics management style in their culture makes it so that every employee has a way to improve the company by making suggestions to management, from there, management will assess the idea and employees are rewarded for suggestions they make. Management also gives their employees more responsibility. The companies management incentive plan allows workers to be paid with what is earned and reflects their work; their earnings must be in accordance with accomplishments and there must be honesty and understanding between workers and management.
Killing or assisting in suicide is not a morally indifferent act. Dr. Kevorkian says, “My intent was only to relieve their suffering, an act that inevitably killed the person.” He justified his acts, because most of his patients had Lou Gehrig’s Disease and could not feed or care for themselves (Murphy, 1999). Although only the good effect was intended, the bad effect (death) was the means to the good effect. The proportionality between the good and bad effect must be analyzed for each specific case. Dr. Kevorkian’s acts violated at least two of the principles of double effect, so they are not ethically justified.
In 1895, James F. Lincoln started the Lincoln Electric Company with only $200 and a patent to an electric motor he had developed. Over the years, the company began to grow slowly and surely, even through the Great Depression of the 1930 's. Now, the company has several factories in the United States and overseas, employing thousands of people. Uniquely, even in a company with many workers and personnel, the level of employee satisfaction is high. Why was this company able to thrive and is still active during economic hardship, a factory fire, and changing times? It is due in large part to the business ethic and culture of the Lincoln Electric Company. We will discuss how James Lincoln 's beliefs influenced the way his company was run, and why

Lincoln, was rooted in Christian belief but not outwardly stated. Although Christian belief was the center of the company’s initial philosophy it has not been mentioned in any of the recent chairman’s speeches, currently there is not a display of religious beliefs. At Lincoln Electric the need of the customers is the reason for being and the drive behind all the actions of its employees. James Lincoln’s philosophy puts the customer as the most important part of the company followed by its employees and lastly its stakeholders. It this clear vision that has powered the success of the company and has maintained it as a major player its field.

This cost the company competitive advantage, and in turn profits, for several years after the war, but based on their skills and adaptability, they were able to out stripe the competition soon after. We are also told that Lincoln Electric will not fire an employee, which allows the workers to embrace change and progress, even if it means they will incur a short-term downturn in productivity. Upon some further reading, we were able to see that Lincoln electric came upon hard times in the 1980s, and lost 40% of its sales. Even in this time of hardship, they stuck to their promise of not firing an employee, and today they have regained all of their lost ground and are extremely profitable and productive.
The Lincoln Electric Company corporate culture today is an extension of that which the founder John C. Lincoln and his younger brother James F. Lincoln instituted over a century ago. The company today remains a profitable, growing and admired organization. Its culture has been analyzed and utilized as an example in business education for many years. The success of the company can be attributed to: the efficiency their corporate philosophy and culture has instilled in their employees; meeting the needs of the customers; and lastly rewarding the shareholders. The gist of their corporate mindset is summed up by the past President, Mr. Willis “Lincoln Electric differs from most other companies in the importance it assigns to each of the groups it serves. (He) identifies these groups, in the order of priority as (1) customers, (2) employees, and (3) stockholders”(Sharplin, Arthur, 1989) According to Carpenter, Taylor, and Erdogan (2009), “When entrepreneurs establish their own businesses, the way they want to do business determines the organization’s rules, the structure set up in the company, and the people they hire to work with them.” James F. Lincoln was strongly influenced by religious teachings which he incorporated into his business ethics. According to Lincoln:
