Throughout various stories and novels authors reveal important traits of the characters in the text. These character traits are used to help readers better understand the character as a whole, their mood, habits and physical appearance. In “The Ring” by Isak Dinesen, Dinesen reveals an abundant amount of these character traits, especially involving Lise. Lise is a complex character, whose actions show who she really is. The evidence in the story gives details that lead the readers to know that Lise is immature and childish, sheltered, and has changed drastically within the story.

Lise experiences one sizeable change, she realizes that she is unhappy with her marriage, even though she was once overjoyed by the new marriage. In the beginning of the story she states on page 226 that “she could never have any secret from her husband.” Although, in the conclusion of the story she is untruthful with her husband. Lise encounters a thief, in the instant she believed he would want something valuable. Hence she gave the thief her wedding ring and the wedding ring was lost. She knows this but as her husband asks, “ ‘Do you remember where you had the ring on last?’ he asked. “No,” she answered.” (230). Lise has a major change in the story because her new found distrust for her husband is a symbol of her uneasiness and sadness with her marriage.
Character traits are an important aspect of a story. They give the readers insight into the character, either through direct quotes or inferences. In “The Ring”, these traits are especially influential because they lead the readers to better understand Lise and the all the character’s motives and actions.
