The democrats and the republicans have been the dominant and only relevant parties within the United States political atmosphere for decades and their stances on environmental policy have similar but also distinct ideas about how to employ the policy properly. The members of the two political parties have structured themselves around conservative and liberal ideologies and continue to apply those ideologies to matters like dealing with global warming and protecting the environment. The two parties split the debate for environmental policy relatively evenly and cover most of the aspects that need to be considered in modern day policy by dividing the priorities of the policy into economical and social preferences.
The Republican Party has

declared that environmental policy must balance economic development and conservation of the environment when implementing policies that protect human health and safety regarding environmental concerns (2012 Republican Party Platform). The Republicans put a strong designation on the economy being a very important factor when considering environmental policy. Speaker of the House Representative Paul Ryan (R), recently had a statement regarding the Clean Power Plan Initiative that puts new regulations on power producers, and puts a strong emphasis on his disagreement for the policy due to its inability to help the economy (PaulRyan.house.gov) The Democratic Party believes the federal government should be the biggest actor when it comes to conserving the environment, especially for future generations (2012 Democratic Party Platform). There is an attitude within the Democratic Party that puts preference on the environment and any implications of the policy are the means worth the ends. The current leader of the Democratic Party within the House of Representatives, Representative Nancy Pelosi has expressed a completely different opinion towards the Clean Power Initiative saying that “the Clean Power Plan represents a historic promise to clean our air and preserve our planet for future generations [and] with this final plan to curb carbon pollution, America sets a new standard on meeting one of the most pressing challenges of our time” (democraticleader.gov). There is clear difference between the two political leader’s opinions about the methods for implementing environmental policy. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party both have different standpoints on environmental policy and this can be associated with the conservative and liberal ideologies of the two parties.
When polling both Democrats and Republicans there is a clear difference in beliefs on whether protecting the environment is a top priority; 34% of Republicans believe that it is a top priority while 60% of Democrats believe it is a top priority (Table 6.3). The Republicans may believe this because they do not believe that this is an issue that can be solved without having the economic implications being too burdensome. The Democrats show a different stance due to their preferences being more liberal and this leads them to believe that the government should make new policy for the good of the environment and leaving the economy to find new opportunities in the aftermath of the policy. When polling about the priority of dealing with global warming there are 11% of Republicans that believe it is a top priority and 43% of Democrats that believe it is a top priority (Table 6.3). The Republicans might see this as an issue that cannot be solved with conservative methods. For the Democratic Party this can be associated with another statistic from table 6.1 that says 59% of Democrats are college graduates and 52% of people from 18-29 are Democrats. This shows that the Democrats are educated young adults that have an outlook on environmental policy that puts preference towards a liberal …show more content…
ideology and their beliefs focus more on the solution to environmental concerns. They do not have to put preference to the economy like Republicans. For a third party to be included in the debate for environmental policy it would have to be very far right or very far left because the Republican Party and the Democratic Party end up creating policy that is more centrist due to the policy being comprised mostly with compromises between the two.
The concerns generally come from the liberal Democrats that want to conserve the environment for generations to come and the conservative Republicans that want to ensure that economic prosperity and environmental protection advance together (ontheissues.org). There really is no room for another party to interject during the development of environmental policy.
The republicans and democrats control the US Congress and this division of political preference is due to the ability of the two parties to captivate the publics interest. The environment affects everyone though and this leaves the policy to be regarded as a necessary area for regulation. The two political parties, that use their ideological beliefs to dictate their positions, divide the people on how to initiate environmental
policy.
Though many things have changed, there are still many similarities between the first and second political party systems. The Democratic Party and the Democratic-Republican Party have a major similarity when it comes to economics. The Democratic Party did not support the American System because it called for a new national bank, uniform currency, and a protective tariff. The American System is the perfect example of the government influencing the economy, and the Democratic Party did not believe in this government intervention because they believed that it gave the wealthy even more privilege. Similarly, the Democratic-Republican Party did not want a government that influenced the economy. They wanted a government that was weaker and that would take a more hands off approach with regards to
The environment has always been controversial topic. Global warming, fossil fuels, and climate change usually are the main topics, when talking about the environment. Many people feel strongly about the issues pertaining to the environment, while others seem not to care. Though some of the populace seems to not care about the environment, many people do not fully understand what is going on. Most of the population is not fully educated on the issues of the environment. While some people are, they are not sure what to do with what they know. If more people had knowledge and knew how to help, would they?
James Oakes’ The Radical and the Republican narrated the relationship between two of America’s greatest leaders: Frederick Douglass, the “radical” abolitionist, and Abraham Lincoln, the “Republican” politician. He did an astonishing job of demonstrating the commonalities between the views of Douglass and Lincoln, but also their differences on their stance of anti-slavery politics and abolitionism. Despite being on the same side of the argument of slavery, Douglass and Lincoln went about their opinions separately. Lincoln held a more patient and orthodox stance on anti-slavery, while Douglass was proven to be obstinate and direct with
Energy and environmental issues are also another topic that both parties disagree on. Democrats support drilling for fossil fuels which is better for the environment. Republicans believe in expanded drilling which creates more energy at a cheaper cost. Democrats are advocates for using tax money to research solutions for alternative energy and Republicans just want to let the industry itself figure out the most practical solutions

The United States, comprised of much political diversity, has only two major political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. The Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists on March 20th, 1854, and is represented by its mascot, the elephant. Often referred to as the “Grand Old Party”, or GOP, Republicans favor customs that exude traditional Christian values with a platform based on American Conservatism. As a Christian myself, the values I share with Republican ideals are a main reason I side with the Republican Party.
Climate change is one of the greatest problems that our society faces today. This issue has been the topic of many debates between the Democrats and Republicans. According to a recent poll taken in July of this year, seventy-one percent of Democrats believe that the Earth’s climate is warming due to human activity, while only twenty-seven percent of Republicans this. Democrats and Republicans have different views, but climate change is very real and needs to be slowed down.
The political climate of environmental injustice movement does not seem promising. With a very polarized, divided Congress, and powerful monopoly run corporations, advocates have to battle—harder than ever to better their communities. Vig and Kraft point out the difficulties of getting environmental legislation passed through Congress when gridlock is occurring. They dissected the issue of policy gridlock into these main indicators: the diverging policy views due to partisan differences, separated powers and bicameralism which occurs when there are major disagreements between the House, Congress, and the President, the complexity of environmental problems where the injustice is so complex that
...ntal movements. In particular, the political pressure to minimize governmental regulation, the budget constraints affecting all areas of governmental spending and doubts about the existence of climate change will require innovative strategies to continue the protection of the environment.
Whether the issue is a continuing problem of significant importance to society, or a relatively new and unheard of phenomenon, public attention and activism tends to follow similar patterns of cycling attitudes and behaviors. As Anthony Downs explains in an article written more than 30 years ago, issues regarding the environment tend to “suddenly leap into prominence, remain there for a short time, and then gradually fade from the center of public attention.” He calls this process the “issue-attention cycle,” one of the most intriguing theories regarding environmental public opinion. Even though this article was written in the 1970’s, Downs’ theory contains crucial insight into what is currently happening with public opinion about the environment today. Ultimately, Anthony Downs’ theory on the issue-attention cycle has the potential to aid in our understanding of how American attitudes towards improving the quality of the environment are shaped, sustained, and lost.
The two articles I am going to look at are Radical Environmentalists vs. the Beavers by Jack Alan Brown Jr. and Environmentalists are Mean Green Joes by F.R. Duplantier.

Since the environmental movement began four decades ago, there have been many differing opinions as to what role the government should play in protecting and preserving the environment. What standards should government set and at what expense? Most environmental or “green” issues are often presented as choices of either economic growth or environmental protection. This idea of having to choose between the environment and the economy has often delayed the green movement from making necessary strides. However, more and more Americans are currently looking toward options that include both environmental protection and economic growth.
The extreme right wing black Protestants and white evangelicals both think that the earth was made for mankind to use and rule over. They also believe that God will intervene before mankind manages to destroy the planet and themselves. Given these viewpoints, one can see how their religious and political affiliations affect their reluctance to accept climate change.
Environmentalism is a segregated movement. According to Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus, the authors of “The Death of Environmentalism,” environmentalist have created a special interest group in which they perpetuate the wrong picture of the environment. According to these men, poverty, war, labor, campaign finance reform and taxes should be categorized under the environmental movement, however due to the predefined image environmentalist have created we do not consider those issues as environmental issues(Shellenberger, and Nordhaus). Shellenberger and Nordhaus believe in using government power to enforce new regulations on uncommon environmental issues in order to resolve the major environmental issues we face today like global warming and pollution. One solution proposed by Shellenberger, and Nordhaus is to think differently about the problem, they claim if a tax credit is incorporated with a certain issue, like emissions, than the likelihood of
