To me one of the most significant things that happened in the story is how Raina is represented that she does not feel very confident with herself, which is an actual problem that many pre-teens and teenagers go through while in school, and it is quiet realistic since her struggle with her image is on the lighter side of the spectrum like some kids due to peer pressure. Another thing that is well represented is that with the help of her friends though she is able to get over her image and begins to feel confident again. The hero of our story is Tiana, a young woman living in New Orleans. The movie begins when she is a child, just as the trademark "Hero's Journey" wheel describes. Yet there is no hiding, no curses, no threats. Just Tiana and her friend listening to a story about a princess and a frog. Not only does this build the setting and add back story to our character when we later on find out about her father's dream of owning his own restaurant, this scene contains foreshadowing and contrast from Tiana and her friend Lottie. Her innocence was gone as she stated that that day was the worst day of her entire life. Cassie hasn’t understood many things of why they had to live differently than others, of why Mr. Simms and other whites treated her the way they did, she hasn’t completely understood all that until the day where Mama was faced with no choice, but to explain it to her. The first chapter of Assia Djebar’s novel, Children of the New World, is split into two parts. The first part is a background into the setting of the novel. The novel is based on the time period when the Algerians were at war with the French in the 1950’s in what is now called the Algerian War. The narrator first describes what it is like for women when neighboring villages were under attack. They try to stay safe by hiding in the backrooms of their house. There they try to hide what is going on outside from the children while at the same time watch what is happening. They would dream of a time when the war was over. The narrator quotes a woman whispering, “’The end,’ someone whispers, and then recites verses from the Koran to ward off bad luck. ‘That will be a marvelous awakening, a deliverance.’” They could be stuck there for days depending on how long the attack is. Even in their houses though, they were not safe. Occasionally, bomb fragments could end up on the terrace and destroy parts of their home. They also were not safe because if the attack was on their own village, the military would set every house on fire until the village was burnt to the ground and there was no way to find refugee from this.

People today struggle in their lives and strive to do better either for himself or for his family. Rosa lived a life she wanted to live because she wanted to. She had a chose to make and she has to learn to live with it. Life is all about choices and we have to learn to accept the choice we make and live with the outcome. Stella chose live a better life than Rosa, but Stella also tried to convince Rosa that life has to go on and she must accept Magda’s death and go on with her life. Rosa was still devastated by her daughter’s death and the destruction of her own store. Rosa has to get over that and live her life. I feel that if you experience anything in life whether it’s good or bad, try to learn from it and move on with your life to make better decisions.
Cassie’s journey towards revealing her innocence begins with a trip to Strawberry, a town relatively far from where she lives. Cassie is going there with her grandmother and brother, along with her brothers ‘friend’ to sell some things at a little market area. Cassie first shows a confused innocence. Cassie is so confused about why her grandmother sets up her wagon in the back of the selling area. She is so innocent that she even points it out and urges her grandmother to move forward. It is then that her grandmother points out that that is where white people are and they should stay where they are. Cassie is still confused but eventually resides to silence. This moment is a good introduction to show Cassie’s innocence because it isn’t too major yet shows the complete and utter lack of understanding. Cassie believes everyone deserves an equal and fair chance to share their goods, she is of course mistaken. At this point in time only white people had any entitlement at all, and black people were given the leftovers. From there, Cassie’s perception of equality plummets.
In her poem "Myth," Natasha Trethewey uses mythology, a unique structure, rhyme pattern, and punctuation to make form and content inseparable. When I first read the short story “The Lesson” I immediately was drawn to the character Sylvia. She is obviously the most outspoken and dynamic character in the short story, however, I saw more to her than a first glance read of an angry, bitter, and cynical girl. Partly I saw more to where she came from, because I understood that on a personal level. I also saw underneath and believe that under that hard facade is someone whose circumstances truly shaped their life whether they were aware of it or not. From looking at the sociological effects of poverty on children it is now even clearer to me that Sylvia’s less than pleasant demeanor was a result of the circumstances she was born into.
Isaac Asimov’s science fiction story “Rain, Rain, Go Away” takes place in an average family whose neighbors have just moved in. Lillian, the mother in said family, was inquisitive as to the motive of the new neighbors animosity towards rain and the extreme pristine state of their kitchen. As a result of their secrecy of their motives, the Wrights (the preeminent family in the story) make a plethora of assumptions to elucidate the Sakkaros’ atypical nature. This goes forth with the idea that things are not always as you may perceive them to be.
Again rain was used in this part of the book to add to the already terrible situation, and made the reader really see and feel the total distress of this scene.
Tears welled up in Lela 's eyes as she turned her back toward her husband while they lay in bed. She could barely breathe. She fought hard not to cry. Her heart felt so heavy as though it would burst at any moment. It was not only the words Ravi used, but also the way he had spoken to her; and the tone he used. She lied motionless, trying to scan her thoughts for any time that Ravi might have ever spoken to her in such demeanor. No, not really. He had been acting it little out of his ordinary lately. Lately, he seemed short-tempered and even arrogant at times. Like the last time she asked him he wanted to have a cup of tea. It was customary that whenever one was making a preferential choice of drink that the other would naturally offer the same. "I 'm making tea, would you like a cup?" She recalled how he snapped at her. "No, did I ask for a damn cup of tea?"

The old ponders the rain scene and remembers their childhood and young days, reminiscing when he'd jump in puddles and spin round and round like a record. Yet he never forgets to guard his grandchildren waiting to jump in rain. Still, you see the eagerness of children if they could have been permitted to take a bath. Therefore, he lets them and we fall down around them, knowing that in their eyes we glow and sparkle and make them feel different and better and filled up and clean.
