Renee Heikamp, 19, and case worker from the Catholic Children’s Aid Society (CCAS), Angie Martin, were charged with criminal negligence resulting in the 1997 death of newborn baby, Jordan Heikamp. The charges were dropped shortly after Jordan’s death, due to a lack of evidence from the investigation of a 63-day inquest. (CBC, 2001). Renee Heikamp and her baby were residing at the Anduhyaun shelter that services Aboriginal women fleeing abuse during the time of his death. Jordan Heikamp had starved to death, weighing only 4 pounds, 4 ounces less than what he weighed at his pre-mature birth, in May 1997; a photograph shown to witnesses at the inquest revealed the corpse of the baby who was little more than a skeleton.
In the essay "Overcoming Abuse - My Story", Shawna Platt talks about her childhood with her alcoholic parents and her struggles. She has experienced neglect, domestic, emotional and sexual abuse. She also talks about how she overcame all the abuse, the way the abuse effected her mental health, and how she broke the cycle with her children. While reading this essay, the one incident stood out the most was that her parents left Shawna alone with her newborn sister. At the time, Shawna was only ten years old.

One of my favorite songs I learned in Primary as a young LDS child was “A Child’s Prayer.” It’s opening lines are “Heavenly Father, are you really there? And do you hear and answer every child’s prayer?” For some children in the United States, they are in such destitute conditions they may doubt there is hope, or anyone above that is listening. Abusive parents, a life in poverty, or sexual abuse are only some of the problems some children in the United States are facing right now. The LDS Church places immense importance on families, and healthy familial relationships– Jesus Christ himself taught little children with love and patience, and in Matthew 19:14 he said “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is
This results in Mama getting beaten by Eugene so badly that she loses her baby. Kambili states that she would count when she heard the thudding sounds from her parent’s room and that “Sometimes it was over before I even go to twenty.” When Kambili hears sounds that could be abuse she follows certain steps to make the time more bearable for her, indicating that abuse is a common occurrence. The abuse that Eugene inflicts upon his family ranges from minor things such as embarrassing Kambili in front of her peers to beating Mama
According to Tennyson Center for Children, “A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds in the U.S.” (“Child Abuse in America”). One cannot fathom the idea of why anyone would intentionally hurt the innocent children of today’s society. Child abuse happens with children of all ages, gender, and religions. Likewise, the world can be identified as a harsh place, where child abuse occurs around the world, and is even evident in the United States. There are many factors that contribute to this repulsive behavior. Physical, sexual, and psychological cruelty are effects of child abuse.
The sympathy of the government for mothers such as Khaila, trying to recover their parental rights has worn thin. Child abandonment is a serious offense and the children that suffer from such neglect face many psychological problems; if they are ever able to survive their circumstances. The abandonment and neglect of a child can result in serious criminal charges. One striking example is the case of seven month old Daniel Scott (Should We Take Away Their Kids?). Baby Daniel had been left for hours unattended and died of in a pool of his own blood. His mother, a crack addict left him in the care of his father to go on a six day crack binge. His father in turn, left him in his crib leaving the door of their Bronx tenement unlocked for any danger to afflict his unprotected son (Should We Take Away Their Kids?). The parents were later charged with manslaughter by negligence.
Latasha said she can never really talk to the children due to their mother not allowing them to talk to people. She also said she believes that the children are afraid their mother due to her behavior towards them. She mentioned that she has seen Tiffany slapping the three oldest children (Mercedes, Branmarion, and James) all up side their heads with both an open and closed hand. She also mentioned that she has seen the children’s mother whip all of the children even the two young ones, and she said she confronted her about the way she whips the children due to her being worried that she may actually hurt one of the children. However, she said when she said something to Tiffany about the way that she disciplines her children her response was “mind your own business these are my got damn children and I am my own boss”. Latasha said Tiffany sometimes becomes afraid after she whips her children due to her being worried herself that she might actually one day harm them. Latasha said Tiffany whips the children whenever she is angry or frustrated. She also mentioned that about three years ago her friend (Rosey) had to go and pick Branmarion up due Tiffany throwing the child down in
It talks briefly about how the children are affected by the constant abuse. Kambili in the novel had a stutter and spoke in a very low voice as a result of the fear of communicating her true feelings and thoughts. They were all fearful of what the consequences might have been if they had a heart-to-heart conversation with Eugene. In the addition, she had an obsession of always trying to please her father, so he would have some act of acknowledgment towards her. In the novel she stated that she “wanted to make Papa proud” for doing what was asked of her (Adichie 94).
...eruption of violence. Though we do not see any abuse in this first chapter, Kambili’s fear is palpable. Her concern for the well-being of her brother signifies not only the punishments they have received in the past, but also that Jaja’s behavior is new. This is a coming of age story for Jaja as well.
Papa begins to suspect Kambili and Jaja have been in the presence of ‘heathen’s while they were away. Consequently, when Papa discovers Kambili and Jaja spent time with their grandfather (or name him), he is infuriated and physically abuses them both. As Kambili endures the excruciating pain, she admits, “I stepped into the tub and stood looking at him. It didn't seem that he was going to get a stick and I felt fear, stinging and raw, fill my bladder and my ears” (193).
Social workers on a daily basis deal with many problems, recognition and reporting suspected child abuse investigation is a very important step in preventing child abuse. As a part of our job we must interview the children during the investigations as a witness because they are themselves the victim of the sexual abuse. My first obstacle on this paper is interviewing the young children in sexual abuse cases and I have a fair amount of concern about whether interviewing the children during the investigations in sexual abuse cases can be traumatize the child abuse victim. We all know that interviewing parents about the suspected child abuse can be very intimidating for adults. Think about the three-year-old and having to go into an interview
