In the physical sense, a rainbow appears after a storm in the sky. It is made up of seven different colors. As it forms an arch, we may look at its shape as being a segment of a complete circle. From the rainbows physical dimensions, Shange draws out other qualities that suit the fluidity and logic of her choreopoem. While it can appear a simple natural phenomenon we take for granted, Shanges choreopoem delivers the rainbow as a complex sustaining figure which forecasts a change in the weather and a change in the life of `the colored girls.' The rainbow is a powerful symbol in Shange's choreopoem. It is not only beautiful in one sense, but it's meaning is rather complex. There is more to the rainbow than its seven colors.
The title of Shanges choreopoem, For colored girls who have considered suicide when the Rainbow is Enuff reverberates with a sense of negativity. This is only surface scratching because when you read and study the contents of this narrative it becomes really an announcement of a victory for `colored girls'. These `colored girls' considered suicide, and for anything to be enuff to pull them away from killing themselves it must be a powerful force and it must hold a promise for fulfilling their desires. The rainbow signifies a move away from death into a happier life. The power of the force is greater than death. It is a life-giving force. The figure of the rainbow traverses race, color and class because it arches over all after the storm. The universality of the rainbow means it is recognizable. P.29 Having attempted suicide four times; Shange writes with the deliberate full intensity of a survivor who places herself at the forefront in defense of `colored girls' who have or who may consider suicide. The defense is a collective effort to provide sustenance through guidance and supportive feeding of the `colored girls' desires to be loved, to be educated, to be actively identified, to be protected, and to know when these rights to life are abused and how to fight for themselves and their family.
Selecting the basis of uniformity as a commonality, I propose that what the `colored girls' want is cast within the contents, the structure, and the style of the choreopoem and the presentation of the choreopoem as an expressive form of shared desires.
In Maya Angelou’s Champion of the World and Amy Tan’s Fish Cheeks both convey their struggles with identity. Both authors are from minority cultures, and describe the same harsh pressures from the dominant culture. They share situations of being outcasts, coming from different racial backgrounds and trying to triumph over these obstacles. Tan and Angelou speak about the differences between their childhood selves and white Americans. Tan talks about the anxiety of a teenage girl who feels embarrassed about her Chinese culture, and who wants to fit in with American society. Angelou’s explains the racial tension and hostility between African and white Americans.
Much of life results from choices we make. How we meet every circumstance, and also how we allow those circumstances to affect us dictates our life. In Marian Minus’s short story, “Girl, Colored," we are given a chance to take a look inside two characters not unlike ourselves. As we are given insight into these two people, their character and environment unfolds, presenting us with people we can relate to and sympathize with. Even if we fail to grasp the fullness of a feeling or circumstance, we are still touched on our own level, evidencing the brilliance of Minus’s writing.
The award-winning book of poems, Brown Girl Dreaming, by Jacqueline Woodson, is an eye-opening story. Told in first person with memories from the author’s own life, it depicts the differences between South Carolina and New York City in the 1960s as understood by a child. The book begins in Ohio, but soon progresses to South Carolina where the author spends a considerable amount of her childhood. She and her older siblings, Hope and Odella (Dell), spend much of their pupilage with their grandparents and absorb the southern way of life before their mother (and new baby brother) whisk them away to New York, where there were more opportunities for people of color in the ‘60s. The conflict here is really more of an internal one, where Jacqueline struggles with the fact that it’s dangerous to be a part of the change, but she can’t subdue the fact that she wants to. She also wrestles with the issue of where she belongs, “The city is settling around me….(but) my eyes fill up with the missing of everything and everyone I’ve ever known” (Woodson 184). The conflict is never explicitly resolved, but the author makes it clear towards the end

Clare exemplified the archetypal character of the tragic mulatto, as she bought tragedy to her own life and all those she came in contact. Clare’s presence forced Irene to contend with feelings of internalized racism, and thus feelings of inferiority. Through diction, tone, and imagery Larsen makes it luminous to readers that "passing" may seem glamorous, however, the sacrifice one makes to do so is not without consequences for themselves and those they care about. Larsen does not allow her readers to perch on the belief that once a member of the dominate group ones life is not without pain and suffering. Every action, even those that seem to make life easier, have consequences.
Marita Bonner starts her short essay by describing the joys and innocence of youth. She depicts the carefree fancies of a cheerful and intelligent child. She compares the feelings of such abandonment and gaiety to that of a kitten in a field of catnip. Where the future is opened to endless opportunities and filled with all the dream and promises that only a youth can know. Each woman is hurt in some way by a man and as they progress throughout the series of “choreopoems”, they alter themselves in different ways to cause an effect upon the various men they associate themselves with. As the women describe their experiences, it is obvious that they make drastic changes in themselves. These women lose purpose and become confused, bitter, scared, and frustrated about their lives. Consequently, the ladies have negative outward reactions that are similar to each other, making the women easy to stereotype. The women in For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enuf have the opportunity to narrate their own stories; however, they choose to emphasize the influence of men in their lives, thus illustrating how susceptible they are to stereotyping and making them weakened as individuals.

Authors Robert Franklin Leslie and Farley Mowat make every attempt to convey the true nature of the wolf throughout their journeys, as they prove claims falsely accusing wolves, with documented evidence of complete vigilance. These works of literary nonfiction effectively refute anti-wolf claims made within them through being dangerous to the wildlife, dangerous to humans, and viciousness.
In “How It Feels to Be Colored Me,” Hurston breaks from the tradition of her time by rejecting the idea that the African American people should be ashamed or saddened by the color of their skin. She tells other African Americans that they should embrace their color and be proud of who they are. She writes, “[A socialite]…has nothing on me. The cosmic Zora emerges,” and “I am the eternal feminine with its string of beads” (942-943). Whether she feels “colored” or not, she knows she is beautiful and of value. But Hurston writes about a time when she did not always know that she was considered colored.

In the same chapter, it mentioned the poet Audre Lorde recognized the historical process and its importance. She wrote “those of us who have been forged in crucibles of difference- those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older,” know that survival means “learning how to take our differences and make them strengths.” The fight for justice has been ongoing for people who are different than the typical white person. One scene in particular that exhibited the parodic manipulation of gender norms was when Rainbow was being dressed for a religious wedding. Throughout the entire novel, Rainbow’s appearance was described as unconventional; she had very short hair, and seldom wore anything traditionally associated with women (dresses, skirts, etc.). Under the guidance of her Aunt Goldie, Rainbow was partially dressed in a completely different attire (that used to belong to her aunt), Goldie commenting “There we are- it looks lovely. Very suitable- high neck and nice long sleeves. And it will be beautiful with this chiffon scarf. Now… underneath…” (127), to which she was referencing the “neon-striped socks and vintage Doc Martens” (127) Rainbow was wearing with her formal outfit. The juxtaposition of the almost archaic women’s dress with her contemporary unisex footwear provides the readership with the very amusing image of Rainbow in an out-of-character look. Rainbow describes herself as feeling “like I’m in drag” (128), referencing individuals who embrace and exaggerate their rejection of gender norms and sexual laws. Aunt Goldie even acknowledges Rainbow’s general inconsistency with cultural gender standards, saying “They do think girls ought to look like girls” (127). The early 1900s was a very challenging time for Negroes especially young women who developed issues in regards to their identities. Their concerns stemmed from their skin colors. Either they were fair skinned due mixed heritage or just dark skinned. Young African American women experienced issues with racial identity which caused them to be in a constant struggle that prohibits them from loving themselves and the skin they are in. The purpose of this paper is to examine those issues in the context of selected creative literature. I will be discussing the various aspects of them and to aid in my analysis, I will be utilizing the works of Nella Larsen from The Norton Anthology of African American Literature, Jessie Bennett Redmond Fauset, and Wallace Brown.
