The Queen's Gambit was written by Walter Tevis, this was his 4th book he wrote. Walter Tevis in San Francisco, 1928. His family moved to Kentucky when he was 10. He was enrolled in a school where he worked in a pool room until college. After college he worked in the Navy, after being discharged, he went to college to study English Literature. He began to write short stories that were getting put into the local newspapers. From then, in 1959 he published his first book, The Hustler. Beth Harmon is the author of the book based around her chess journey. When she was only 8 years old, she was an orphan. She was incredibly smart for her age at the orphanage, so she would often clean the erasers down in the basement where she learned to play chess. …show more content…
Next up is Benny. Benny was a national champion before Beth came and beat him. He helped Beth study for many of her large games, but at the same time, being one of her only friends. I feel that Benny is a dynamic character because in the beginning, Benny didn't really believe in Beth and saw her as an enemy, then as the story continued, he liked her and helped her win. Next is the Borgov. He was the world champion of chess for the past year. In previous years Beth had played him, only to lose horribly. I believe that Borgov is a static character because throughout the book he was the big scary opponent and even after winning, he was still scary. The setting of The Queen's Gambit is the mid 1950-1960s in Lexington, Kentucky. The mood of this story is gloomy and nerving/suspenseful. I feel as if the story has a gloomy theme to it because of how Beth's life played out. From the start, she was a sad orphan who got addicted to tranquilizers. Throughout her life, her orphaned dad left her and her mother died. She went through a time of grief where all she did was drink. Now the reason why this book was nerving or even suspenseful was because during the games you would get to know her emotions in …show more content…
This book's point of view is third person omniscient. I know this because the book refers to Beth and pronouns such as she/her. But we also get to know Beth's thoughts on her gameplay and just her normal life. In the book it says “She went slack inside her, and she heard her own silent voice saying, Take it!” This shows us how we are able to know what she is saying in her head during her game. The theme for the Queen's Gambit is power and suspense. The first thing I chose was power because in the Queen's Gambit it says “The U.S. Championship would be in 3 weeks; it was time it was won by a woman. It was time she won.” This shows power in Beth because she wants to win the U.S. championship as the first woman, and that she is able to win it shows a lot of power within herself. Now for suspense, the book reads “She would have to bring the rook up to protect.” This is a suspenseful scene because we don't know if Beth is going to win or lose against the world champion. We also get to see how stressed Beth is and how she tries to fix her mistakes. I loved this book, it's definitely an 8/10. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys chess, and it has a really good
The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard does not require a great imagination. Ms. Aveyard does a splendid job of using imagery. The plot of the novel flows in a way that makes it feel real. The book is told from the perspective of Mare Barrow. Throughout the book we see the occurrences of her life. She progresses a great deal for the duration of the novel.
"To promote a woman to bear rule, superiority, dominion, or empire above any realm, nation or city is repugnant to nature, contumely to God, a thing most contarious to his revealed will and approved ordinance, and finally it is the subversion of good order, of all equality and justice."
Queenie Volupides had an argument with her husband the night of his death and went to the country club. At 1 am she left the country club and invited her friends over for another drink. Queenie’s friends got there 10 minutes after she did. She claimed that Arthur fell down the stairs going to get another drink. The autopsy report showed that Author died from a wound in the back of his head, and that he was drunk. I believe that
Mary Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart, was born on December 8th, 1542 to James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Just six days after Mary’s birth, her father died. She was crowned queen of Scotland within a year. Her regents originally arranged an engagement between her and Henry the VIII of England’s son, but after continuing to send his army north and encouraging the execution of a well-known Scottish patriot, they were determined to avoid marriage. So, in 1548, they sent Mary to France, where her mother was from. Mary was the engaged to the heir of the French throne, Francis of Valois, the son of Henry II of France and Catherine de Medicis. She grew up in the French court as a result of this. When she was 7, her mother came to visit her in France, unfortunately this
History is divided on whether Boudica a scorned woman or did she have a justified reason for her retaliation. The book, Real Lives Boudica the story of the Fearless Icini Queen, by Gaby Halberstam, published by A&C Black in London, is a story told by Boudica herself. She is known for taking down over 70,000 Roman men and women due to the pain that they inflicted on her and her people. The book is written in the first person about the historical events that unfolded in Boudica’s life in a fictional story. This book does an amazing job at making the reader feel as if they were Boudica and an idea of what her personality would have been. Halberstam was able to give details through research and filling in the blanks. There are many famous men and women from our history that we would like to have a personal conversation with and this book is almost like sitting across from Boudica, listening to her tell her story.
Countess Elizabeth Bathory is known as the most vicious female serial killer. Coming from a noble family in Kingdom, Hungary, no one really knows why she went out of her way torture hundreds of women. Either way throughout about a 20 year time span, Bathory spent her time not only ruling multiple castles, but taking in innocent women and children of the local men and women and making them her own. “Bathory and four collaborators were accused of torturing and killing hundreds of young women between 1585 and 1610” (Wikipedia 1).

The memoir of Old Elizabeth presents a rare and important slave narrative in which the stories of African American women intersect with the experiences of African American people in roles of religious leadership. Elizabeth broke many of societies conventions at the time by preaching and holding religious meeting despite being woman. Her religious work was met with backlash from the church and from many other people who did not accept the idea of a woman leading religious services, yet she continued to practice until her health would no longer allow for it. This is unusual as it spends most of the narrative on the time after she was free rather than focusing on the time that she was enslaved the way that many slave narratives do.
During her entire rule, Elizabeth I allowed for England to reach an equilibrium in its religious affairs through “The Elizabethan Settlement”, or her religious compromise. The Book of Common Prayer, issued by the Edward VI’s advisor Thomas Cranmer, was restored by Elizabeth....
The first page I read i couldn’t stop and couldn’t put it down and I was addicted to the book. My favorite character is Violet and Finch but mostly Violet, I loved how she put things into words and how she explained her experiences. Since she was a writer she knew how to describe things and I liked her opinions. What I liked about Finch is how in love he was and how he described things with Violet in his life. Prior to Violet he was very dull for the little bit we got to see without her. One of my favorite parts in this book is Finch tells Violet she’s all the colors in one. It’s just adorable, “you are all the colors in one, at full brightness” (Niven

One might second guess poetry written by the Queen of England while others might be intrigued by it. During Queen Elizabeth’s challenging reign as Queen, she faced many burdensome obstacles. In her poem, “The Doubt of Future Foes”, she describes a significant one which involved her sister, Mary of Scots. She expresses her condescending and disgusted attitude toward her tenacious sister by using picturesque language. The inspiration for this poem, Mary had been living under her sister’s protection in England after being removed from the Scottish throne. Subsequently, Catholic Scots wished to replace Elizabeth with Mary. Then, Sir Anthony Babington and other Catholics made a plot attempt to place Mary on the English throne, but the plot was shortly unsealed by Elizabeth. Mary was then executed for her awareness of the plot. To retell these series of events, Elizabeth uses figurative language, imagery, and symbolism to reveal her utmost disappointment in Mary.
The evaluation plan is a part of the action cycle, which explains what has been accomplished (National Association of County & City Health Officials, 2014). Determination of what individuals, entities, organizations will be involved is much important before starting the evaluation plan. Process evaluation plan and outcome evaluation plan are the two types of planning available (Capacity for Health, 2014). The process evaluation plan shows how the program is operated and implemented while, the outcome evaluation examines the entire MAPP process (Capacity for Health, 2014). Champaign County will evaluate the action plans showing the objectives for each of the most important and top three health priorities; violence, access to car and obesity.
