The Prostitute In Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground, and The Meek One
The prostitute is a curious fixture of Victorian era literature. In the works of William Thackeray and Samuel Richardson it was almost cliché for the heroine to end up in a house of prostitution and then to transcend that situation in a show of proper Victorian morals. Having seen many young women forced by extreme poverty to take up the trade of a loose woman, Fyodor Dostoevsky, a petit-bourgeois fallen on hard times himself, took a rather different approach to the whole issue; he recognized that these women were not utterly without merit as so many people of the time thought. Georg Brandes spoke accurately when he said, "Dostoevsky preaches the morality of the pariah, the morality of the slave." Dostoevsky explored these themes through prostitute characters in many of his works. The most famous of these characters are found in Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground, and "The Meek One." Each of these presents a unique approach to the condition of prostitutes and the problem of their redemption.
In Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky uses the character of Sonia Marmeladov, whose first name means wisdom, not solely to illustrate God's mercy toward a fallen woman but to have her redeem both herself and Raskolnikov through God's mercy. As in the parable given by Father Zosima on his death bed in The Brothers Karamazov, Raskolnikov's initial connection to Sonia in Book I functions as his "stalk of grain" which keeps him from being completely severed from God's grace. But most importantly, he tells us that without our own attempt to transcend our sinful nature we will fail like the Underground Man or leap to our spiritual and physical doom as the heroine of "The Meek One" did. We are all Raskolnikov, we are all Sonia. The key is to strive, strive harder and strive forever to reach the unreachable perfection lost to us and unreachable without God.

Often times in literature, we are presented with quintessential characters that are all placed into the conventional categories of either good or bad. In these pieces, we are usually able to differentiate the characters and discover their true intentions from reading only a few chapters. However, in some remarkable pieces of work, authors create characters that are so realistic and so complex that we are unable to distinguish them as purely good or evil. In the novel Crime and Punishment, Fyodor Dostoevsky develops the morally ambiguous characters of Raskolnikov and Svidrigailov to provide us with an interesting read and to give us a chance to evaluate each character.
There are several famous Western Composers in History, but the one composer that I wanted to know more about is George Frideric Handel. He was born on February 23, 1682 and he was a German- born British Baroque composer. He studied at the University of Halle before moving to Hamburg in 1703, where he served as a violinist in the opera orchestra. He was born the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach. He spent most of his life in London and he was well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel was a son of a barber- surgeon and Handel’s dad wanted him to become a lawyer, but he was into music. Handel’s father didn’t want to by Handel an instrument because he didn’t want him to be a composer. His mom and his aunt was the only one that supported him. Handel started playing the violin,
In Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky gives the reader an inside look to the value system that he holds for himself, as well as the type of characteristics that he abhors in people as well as the characteristics that he admires in people. He uses characters in the novel to express his beliefs of what a person should be like in life to be a “good'; person. Specifically he uses Raskolnokv to show both good and bad characteristics that he likes in people. Also he uses Svidriglaiov and Luzin to demonstrate the characteristics that people should shun and his personal dislikes in people.
In Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, Raskalnikov undergoes a period of extreme psychological upheaval. By comparing this death and rebirth of Raskalnikov's psyche to the story of the resurrection of Lazarus, Dostoevsky emphasizes not only the gravity of his crimes, but also the importance of acceptance of guilt.

George, at a young age, had a passion for music, but his father wanted him to pursue a career in civil law. Throughout Shakespeare?s play, Hamlet, the main character, young Hamlet, is faced with the responsibility of attaining vengeance for his father?s murder. He decides to feign madness as part of his plan to gain the opportunity to kill Claudius. As the play progresses, his depiction of a madman becomes increasingly believable, and the characters around him react accordingly. However, through his inner thoughts and the apparent reasons for his actions, it is clear that he is not really mad and is simply an actor simulating insanity in order to fulfill his duty to his father.
Throughout Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, the main character, Hamlet, must seek revenge for the murder of his father. Hamlet decides to portray an act of insanity, as part of his plan to murder Claudius. Throughout the play, Hamlet becomes more and more believable in his act, even convincing his mother that he is crazy. However, through his thoughts, and actions, the reader can see that he is in fact putting up an act, he is simply simulating insanity to help fulfil his fathers duty of revenge. Throughout the play, Hamlet shows that he understands real from fake, right from wrong and his enemies from his friends. Even in his madness, he retorts and is clever in his speech and has full understanding of what if going on around him. Most importantly, Hamlet does not think like that of a person who is mad. Stanley states that: “Handel was by training and temperament a composer… Like Mozart he possessed in the highest degree the supreme attributes of the musical dramatist” (105-106). The surprising thing is Handel was not raised to be a musician. His father had wanted Handel to become a lawyer. He graduated Halle in law, 1702, to satisfy his father’s wish. He did this even though he was intent on music (Lang 20). One day years before, when his father brought him to visit the courts, a duke heard him playing the organ and asked his father to train him in music. Handel’s father still wanted him to study law, but now young Handel started getting different ideas. After graduating, he traveled to Italy and studied music for a while. After learning what he could from Italian music, Handel left in search of a place where he could expand his music (Lang 106). He soon found England to be what he needed. There he could grow into a musician. He had the people and resources to become a virtuoso.

Handel’s father prohibited him to use any musical instruments because he wanted him to study law. However, Handel secretly learned to play the harpsichord and pipe organ and became a talented performer. During a trip to Weissenfels that Handel and his father took to see Handel’s nephew, who was Duke Johann Adolf I’s valet, Handel was given the opportunity to play the organ. Everyone was impressed by his performance, and Handel and the duke were able to persuade his father to let Handel receive music lessons from Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, who played the organ for Halle’s Marienkirche. Handel received lessons on the harpsichord, oboe, organ, and violin. Handle complied with his father’s desire by attending the University of Halle and studying Civil Law in1702. He played the organ at the evangelical reformed church for one year before leaving to play the harpsichord and violin in the orchestra of the Hamburg Oper am Gansemarkt. In 1705, he produced Almira and Nero, which were his first two operas. Three years later, he produced two additional operas entitled Daphne and Florindo. He met Gian Gastone de’ Medici while in Hamburg, and he invited him to Italy. In 1706, Handel accepted his offer and journeyed to Italy and worked together with Antonio Salvi. His first opera that he composed for Italian performance was entitled Rodrigo, and it was performed in 1707 in the Florence’s Cocomero theatre. He wrote his first oratorio entitled Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno in 1707. He produced music for the clergy of Rome, including his popular work Dixit Dominus. Nevertheless, George Handel never gave up his dreams of becoming a musician. When he was seven, Handel performed before the duke at Weissenfels and became the student of Friedrich Wilhelm Zacchow, who was a composer and organist at the Liebfrauenkirche in Germany. He also taught Handel many compositions for these instruments and many other instruments like it. When Handel was eighteen, he attended the University of Halle to appease his father, who persisted that his son becomes a lawyer. However, before Handel was able to finish his education at the University of Halle, he left to fulfill is lifelong dream as a musician. He composed a mass quantity of pieces from 1696 to 1701.
In history, crimes have been dealt with by the justice system according to its severity as well as the offender: if the crime committed was not very serious and the offender was deemed “non-delinquent”, or “free of any real criminal disposition”, they would be cautioned or fined. However, were the crime a more serious one and the offender appeared to have a “criminal character”, they would receive more severe and more deterrent punishment (Garland, 2001: 42).

In his novel Crime and Punishment Fyodor Dostoevsky uses Raskolnikov as a vessel for several different philosophies that were particularly prominent at the time in order to obliquely express his opinions concerning those schools of thought. Raskolnikov begins his journey in Crime and Punishment with a nihilistic worldview and eventually transitions to a more optimistic one strongly resembling Christian existentialism, the philosophy Dostoevsky preferred, although it could be argued that it is not a complete conversion. Nonetheless, by the end of his journey Raskolnikov has undergone a fundamental shift in character. This transformation is due in large part to the influence other characters have on him, particularly Sonia. Raskolnikov’s relationship with Sonia plays a significant role in furthering his character development and shaping the philosophical themes of the novel.
Handel was born on February 24th, 1625 in Halle, Germany. He was born into a family with no musical background, but started to show signs of talent at the age of ten (8notes.com). His father wished for him to study Civil Law, but became alarmed when George showed such interest in music (Wikipedia). Handel then began to secretly practice the organ and the harpsichord, but played only to himself until meeting Duke Johann Adolf II. Handel was a prize in the Duke’s eyes, one that he would not let slip away. So with his father’s permission, Handel started to study music openly and freely. Handel then made the move to Hamburg, where he became a violinist in an orchestra. There he learned the Italian styles of music, and began to develop his opera Almira. This opera gave him great success, and he spent the next ten years perfecting his style of opera before moving back to Germany in 1710. His time there was quick, because Handel was being called for all over the world.
