There has been initiatives to stop weapons proliferation through the formations of international laws and organization. One of the groups mentioned earlier is the Chemical Weapon Convention as one of the first efforts to eliminate chemical weapon stockpiles in many developed nations. Now the CWC is under the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons or OPCW. OPCW was a reaction to the growth of chemical weapon stockpiled during the first half of the 20th century. Not only do they want to stop the use and stockpile of chemical weapons, but they are proponents of the disagree of any weapons of mass destruction. Initiatives to stop weapons proliferation have been been around since the 1700s. Countries proliferating weapons has always …show more content…
People affected by chemical weapons experienced "painful lung diseases, a lot of people blind for the rest of their lives.”@ After seeing the detrimental effects these weapons had on normal civilians and soldiers lives bans were put in place to try to ensure that ailments caused by the First World War never happen again. The first step taken was the Geneva Protocol in 1925 that banned all use of chemical and biological weapons in international conflicts. One of the major issues with the Geneva Protocol is that it did not stop use of chemical and biological weapons in civil conflict. In the Holocaust the use of Zyklon B in the gas chambers was unrestricted. Despite the Geneva Protocol use of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons was still widespread. Other efforts to stop nuclear weapons proliferation are the Proliferation Security Initiative, Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Organization , and the Treaty on Nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. The goal of the Proliferation Security Initiative is to stop all trafficking of weapons …show more content…
Having a nuclear bomb was a great equalizer when it came to military strength, and military strength lead to an increase in political strength. After America bombed the two bombs in Japan it solidifies America's place as being a world superpower. Now all of the World superpowers have at least one nuclear bomb and it is no longer as much as an equalizer as it used to be. The main focus weapons of mass destruction has in politics is trying to ensure no more countries or terrorist get them. The recent conflict in Syria with the use to chemical weapons made many nations suspicious of what countries actually have secret WMD arsenals. Generally, it was thought that all of the nations that were in possession of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons were known but due to black market trading and secret weapons compounds it is not as clear which countries have weapon
As we move into the Twentieth Century the similarities are almost identical. The First World War has shaped not only modern warfare but even produced global attention to the brutal and inhumane death toll of the war. As stated in the Geneva Protocol, which prohibited the use of chemical weapons in warfare, which was signed in 1925? While this was a welcomed step, the Protocol had a number of significant short comings, including the fact that it did not prohibit the development, production or stockpiling of chemical weapons.
Though chemical warfare was proven effective and easily produced, the world council decided that it was inhumane to use. In 1972, chemical warfare was ban at the Biological Weapons Convention. At this convention, many country’s leaders voted that it was not right to use these weapons as a way to kill people. The leaders felt that a biological weapon was too dangerous to release. (opbw.org)
This essay will discuss the pros and cons of gun control. Some U.S. States have already adopted some of these gun control laws. I will be talking about the 2nd amendment, public safety, home safety, and do gun control laws really control guns. I hope after you have read this you will be more educated, and can pick your side of the gun control debate. So keep reading and find out more about the gun control laws that the federal and some state governments want to enforce on U.S. Citizens.
Is it any coincidence that the states with the loosest gun laws in America tend to contribute to the highest amount of national gun deaths and injuries? This is one of the main questions we should be asking when deciding what is best for our country and its citizens. Although gun control has been an ongoing issue, certain events like the Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the Aurora, Colorado mass shootings have increased our attention to this topic. Although I believe that Americans possess the right to own a firearm, I believe there should be detailed screening and control systems to keep guns out of the wrong hands, to prevent more gun violence from happening in the future.
If you have ever picked up a handgun whether it ranges from a real gun to even a water gun, you know of how simple it is to use and or operate it within a matter of minutes. You simply enough pick it up, aim it, and squeeze the trigger. The gun does all the rest. The trigger pushes against the sear and the disconnector, this releases the hammer which hits the firing pin that expels the bullet from the cartridge. From a technical viewpoint, this process is almost child 's play. Therein lies the problem. Children have been shown to frequently handle guns, with dire results. According to the Center for Disease Control, 409 kids aged 14 or younger died in 2013 alone as a result of playing with guns (Center for Disease Control “2013, United States
Comparing the United States’ homicidal statistics to England and Wales’, I’ve been moderately persuaded towards the opponent’s side of gun control. It’s difficult to dictate what’s morally acceptable in today’s society with the increasing amounts of controversy, but noticing the dramatic increases in crime rate due to the lack in supply of guns, versus the dramatic decreases in crime rate because of an increase in the supply of guns, definitely proves the consequences of gun control to a certain degree. I would also have to agree that ridding the public from their firearms does take away the privilege of defending ourselves from any sort of crime. With the given results, knowing that our American citizens defend themselves from
Firearm owners can be criticized due to constant misunderstandings for owning guns. Many Americans may see firearm owners as someone who can hurt and kill people. As a firearm seen as an object that may cause harm to an individual, people feel terrorized when living next to an owner of of a gun. Citizens of the United States believe the cause of many violent deaths throughout the country are because of gun ownerships eligibility to all citizens and no guarantee of complete safe responsibility of the individual. People fear the lack of safety precautions and little knowledge of owning a gun will create an occurrence of accidents. People believe troops and law enforcement are the only ones to be in charge of a gun because they
Today in this day and age the world is filled with hate and violence and other terrible things. People use weapons and other objects to cause terror on others for many reasons such as power and wealth. Firearms are one of the weapons someone may use to harm or rule over others because of the danger the weapon can cause. Over the years with gun violence and killings, some people want to get rid of the citizens right to purchase and own firearms. Although gun violence bad, by taking a person’s right to bear arms will not solve the problem with gun violence in todays society.
Due to recent shootings in four cities gun control legislation has become a big issue throughout the United States. Government officials have presented legislation for gun control to help reduce mass shootings; however, even with these suggestions for strict gun control twelve states have already passed laws that offer fewer limitations for gun possession. After the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, Connecticut passed a law to ban gun sales that hold large amounts of ammunition. According to McLeod “in Newtown, Connecticut, the families of ten out of twenty children killed in a December 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School have sued a North Carolina-based gun manufacturer, alleging Remington Outdoor Co.’s Bushmaster
As a result of several recent mass shootings, gun control has become a popular topic. Gun control refers to the laws, background checks, and more protections against mentally ill individuals purchasing firearms. Some of the population believes that gun control should be strengthened, while the others are against it. There have been many situations in which firearms were used to harm innocent people, but gun control is not the solution to the problem we face as a nation.
Also today is the danger that life is extinguished on earth through such a horrible weapon , not over. Many states are in possession of nuclear bombs , because that means for them power. Even dictatorships and unjust regime like China and North Korea have nuclear weapons.
The United States should limit the weapons of mass destruction in other countries because they are a threat not only to us and our allies, but to the world at large.
The Cold War was a time of great tension all over the world. From 1945 to 1989, the United States was the leader and nuclear power and was competing with the Soviet Union to create huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons. However, even though the Cold War ended, nuclear weapons are still a threat. Countries around the world strive to create nuclear power, and they do not promise to use it for peaceful purposes. Some examples of the struggles caused by nuclear weapons include the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and Iran’s recent nuclear weapon program. Surely, nuclear weapons have created conflict all over the world since the Cold War era.
In 1945, when the Americans bombed Hiroshima, Japan, approximately 140,000 men and women were instantly killed by the effects of American nuclear defense. With such extreme brutality and force how many people must die for one to finally realize the strengths of nuclear bombs and what damage they can cause. Nuclear weapons should be outlawed because they kill thousands of innocent humans at a time, destroy the environment, and inviolate human’s right to moral and personal freedoms.
Every day we are surrounded by stories of war. In fact, we have become so accustomed to it, that we are now entertained by it. Video games, movies, and books filled with heroes who once dominated the battlefields. However it is constantly stated, “no good comes from war.” Even famous songs state “war... what is it good for… absolutely nothing.” But what if war was actually necessary? Throughout history, we see examples of the good things wars have brought. War has freed slaves, modernized medicine, brought down evil empires, and even brought countries together
