People who discriminate against other races or other peoples sexuality are considered prejudiced. Prejudice is unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.(Dictionary.refrence.com) So prejudice and racism goes together because racism is a type of prejudice that is used to justify the belief that one racial category is somehow superior or inferior to others.(cnx.org) The Ku Klux Klan is an example of racist organization; its members’ belief in white supremacy has encouraged over a century of hate crime and hate speech.(cnx.org) Every day there are people who are prejudice against others. Maya Angelou states that “prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the resent inaccessible” (Goodreads.com). There is still prejudice in America.
Most Americans probably take race for granted as affixed and eternal fact and regard slavery as simply the clearest example of prejudice, but there are many more examples of prejudice. For example racism against many different cultural and religious groups, like Muslims, African Americans, or just the hatred some people have for homosexuals. In conclusion, this book shows us that slavery is against mankind and all people are equal concerned of the race. Racism has become an wide-ranging in many of the countries mostly in northern Europe and Russia. Skin colour means nothing but just an identity. Many people use it to discriminate others whereas they got equal intelligence and sometimes the person being discriminated upon could be having sharper brains. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. In 2004, Dukes vs. Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation was a civil rights class-action suite that ruled in favor of the women who worked and did not received promotions, pay and certain job assignments. An example of racial prejudice would be to assume that African American teenagers tend to be thieves. An individual store owner may have such racial prejudice simply based on an unfounded preconceived opinion. Prejudice can be caused because of various reasons. Religion, ethnic race and social status are examples of causes of prejudice. Sometimes prejudice is caused by how we are raised. Many times parents pass on prejudice beliefs to their children. A lot people raised in the southern part of the country are prejudice against blacks. The targets of the harassment are people who are usually perceived as “weaker” or “inferior” by the person who is harassing them. Companies and employers can also be guilty of workplace harassment if they utilize discriminatory practices against persons based on ethnicity, country of origin, religion, race, color, age, disability, or sex. These discriminatory practices have been illegal since the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Civil Rights Act of 1964), and have been amended to be more inclusive of other people who experience discrimination by the Civil Rights Act of 1991 (The Civil Rights Act of 1991), and most recently, President Obama’s signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 (Stolberg, 2009).
