The entire world contributes to the carbon emissions but there are ways we can use less gases to help decrease the amount we use. One way is carpooling. Carpooling can help decrease the amount of carbon emissions we make by having less cars on the road to make carbon emissions. Carpooling also saves you money. Other ways are using alternative fuel sources. Some alternative fuel sources are biodiesel, ethanol, hydrogen etc. There are also cars that use other things like electricity or less fuel. These can be cheaper than just petroleum and less harmful to the environment. “HEVs [hybrid electric vehicle] typically achieve better fuel economy and have lower fuel costs than similar conventional vehicles. Using fossil fuels is extremely dangerous to our environment, but there are plenty of ways one can reduce their fossil fuel intake. Carpooling with your friends to school, work, and just in general is a great choice to make. Not only would it improve the environment, but it would save money, too. Another great way to cut down on fossil fuels is to walk to get from place to place. Walking is an easy way to get an exercise in and is even proven to increase happiness. This statistic, in and of itself, is a matter of concern with respect to the greenhouse gas emissions that result from petroleum combustion. However, perhaps more disconcerting is the fact that U.S. oil production peaked in 1970 and has continued to fall since then (Campbell et. al., 1998). Therefore, the American public has turned to foreign oil, in particular Middle Eastern oil, to supplement its increase in demand. In an age where terrorism is at the forefront of people's minds, we still continue to import oil from the same nations that supposedly harbor so-called terrorist groups. The fact is that we are unwilling to responsibly face our energy future and instead choose to maintain a policy of increasing oil supply through importation.
One way to “go green” is to use mass transit or ride a bicycle more often as cars are one of the main culprits in carbon dioxide emissions. By leaving the car in park and taking a bus or riding a bike just once a week can significantly cut down on emissions from American’s cars. Other ways to “go green” include planting trees and stopping deforestation. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide that causes global warming, but thousands of trees are harvested every day all across the country. According to “Solutions,” “Taken together, tropical deforestation and emissions from agriculture represent nearly 30% or the world’s heat-trapping emissions.” In this quote, the writer explains that nearly one-third of the carbon dioxide is from deforestation combined with agricultural emissions. Americans need to reverse this problem; Americans should cut down on deforestation and plant more trees! Another way to “go green” is to spread the word. One single American cannot reverse global warming. All Americans must take up the calling to stop global warming in America. The question comes up why do we need so much oil? The answer is simple, because most man-made transportation relies heavily on oil. There have been a few companies that have tried to reduce this by making “hybrids”, which are cars that use two different sources of energy but oil is still a part of that. It is slowly starting to change but not enough to make a dent. So it has been established that America uses up oil, but who do we rely on for our supply?
Today, people use their own personal vehicles to travel more than ever before. Personal transportation is no longer considered a luxury; it is now considered a necessity. The number of cars in the United States has been growing steadily since the 1970s. The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
People can also reduce the use of fossil fuels by doing simple things for instance switching off lights and appliances when leaving the room. Walking or cycling instead of driving a car or use public transport for maybe longer journeys. Little things like this will make a big difference, making our planet a better place.
Humans and animals breathe out Carbon Dioxide, often referred to as the greenhouse gas, as a waste product. Plants take in this CO2 and use it to make food. This is called photosynthesis. During this process oxygen is released which is then breathed in by humans and animals. This procedure is repeated over and over and a natural balance is obtained. However this natural balance is disrupted by human activity. People of the world are putting more than 5.5 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. 75% of this is caused from the burning of fossil fuels. These fuels are burnt all the time to run factories, power plants and vehicles. The main sources of CO2 emissions are electric utilities, residential buildings, industry and transportation. The other 25% is induced by the destruction of the world's forests. The reason for this is that there are less trees and plants to take in the CO2 but there is just as many, if not more, humans and animals to breathe it out.

Electric cars help lower emissions because they have completely clean motors. As time progresses, emission standards rise and will become harder to meet for automakers. Electric motors will always have zero emissions and auto makers won't have to spend extra money to make their engines cleaner and more fuel efficient. Originally, when the internal combustion engine was invented, pollution wasn't a problem. After hundreds of years and the many combustion engines created, all the exhaust has built up. Today, pollution is one of the largest problems in our environment. Every year the average miles driven rises for everyone. When this rises, the pollution rises as well.
