“If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal that hasn't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson's eyes and ask him if it hurts.” (DeGeneres, DG). Think about those animals imprisoned in cold cages, having nothing to do but wait, waiting in fear, knowing that when the time comes their cages will be opened, but not to set them free. Unable to react, unable to defend themselves, they rot in pain and mourn with isolation. And yet all we, humans, do is sit back and watch them suffer. Animal testing is the abuse of animals to develop new products. Although some people are against animal testing others agree that animals are needed in researches to find upgraded and new cures for developing diseases, to find advanced aesthetic products, and to find refine household products leading to a more satisfying quality.
Millions of Mice, rats, dogs, primates are used in laboratories to test products of all kinds. They are imprisoned in small cages, forced to try new products with results that may have many dreadful or/and painful effects. More than that, animals used for testing are treated badly. For instance, mice and rats are forced to inhale noxious fumes, rabbits are held down by vices and have caustic chemicals applied onto their skin and eye. Some animals develop strange reactions resulting from the loneliness they had to face when in cages; they would shrink in fear every time someone passes by them, they would rock back and forth, pull their own hair, and spin in circles (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA). In the scientific world animals...

Although animal research is a shareholder in the development of medicine and the advance of cosmetic and household products, it is still not legitimate to abuse those creatures to satisfy human needs and wants. Alternatives have been initiated to relinquish the use of non-human beings since it is against animal rights. Animal testing should be prohibited and new methods should be introduced to non-medical institutions like the cosmetic industries and the household production enterprises. Laboratories should take ease of technology to supersede animals by upgraded alternatives that can help in the development of new treatments that may be more efficient. Personally, I think animal testing is a cruel nature that cannot be justified. Why sacrifice those defenseless lives if superior methods are available?
Although not as strictly addressed, there is still a schism when it comes to the matters of experimentation involving animals. Those in opposition of it see it as being against the will of the animal, because animals have no say in the matter. However, through animal experimentation there has been vast medical advances in hospitals and veterinarians , research has led to cures for various diseases that would normally take many more years to cure, and the use of animals is highly ethical considering what could be the alternative, although there is progress being made to change these measures. This is how animal experimentation is of use to society for humans and animals.
Albert Sabin, the developer of the polio vaccine once said, “Without animal research, polio would still be claiming thousands of lives each year.” Polio is a deadly disease caused by a virus that spreads from person to person. This infectious disease renders the brain and spinal cord helpless while also ensuring a permanent case of paralysis to the victim. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “…13,000 to 20,000 para-lytic cases were reported annually,” before the 18th century. After the introduction of the polio vaccine, “…a total of 2,525 paralytic cases were reported, compared with 61 in 1965.” This dramatic decrease in the prominence of the polio disease can only be attributed to the success of animal testing. Animal experimentation is used in the research of genetics, drug testing, biology, toxicity testing, cosmetic testing, and many other fields. Despite all of its beneficial traits, animal testing has been wildly controversial over the past decades because of its perceived unethical treatment towards animals. Although animal testing may be deemed unethical by many, it is a form of medical testing that has not only saved lives but has also greatly revolutionized the medical world.
Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside cold, barren cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, ache with loneliness, and long to roam free and use their minds. Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them.” (“Animal Testing 101”)
Throughout history, beginning as early as 500 BC, animals have been used to test products that will later be utilized by humans (“Animal Testing” 4), what isn’t publicly discussed is the way it will leave the animals after the process is done. Many innocent rabbits, monkeys, mice, and even popular pets such as dogs are harmed during the testing application of cosmetics, medicine, perfumes, and many other consumer products (Donaldson 2). Nevertheless, there are many people whom support the scandal because "it is a legal requirement to carry out animal testing to ensure they are safe and effective” for human benefit (Drayson). The overall question here is should it even be an authorized form of experimentation in the United States, or anywhere else? The fact of the matter is that there are alternatives to remove animals out of the equation for good (“Alternatives” 1). They are cheaper, and less invasive than the maltreatment of the 26 million innocent animals that are subjected to the heartlessness of testing each year (“Animal Testing” 4). All in all, due to the harsh effects of animal testing, it should be treated as animal cruelty in today’s society.
At this moment, millions of animals know cold cages in laboratories as home, but why? Some of these animals are subjects for medical research purposes, while others are used out of pure curiosity and to test different products. Majority of these animals are used in painful experiments and are left in agony. While many of them die, a few animals survive, but these unfortunate ones wish they could be put out of their misery as well. Although scientists have resources they could use to lower the pain each animal endures and even alternatives of their test subjects, millions of innocent creatures are still suffering. The fact that animals are still used when animal experimentation is avoidable and not necessary makes animal testing unethical.
The Cruelty of Cosmetic Testing on Animals Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of cosmetic research. A movement to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been gaining popularity, with many companies hopping on the bandwagon against this research. New alternatives have been developed to eliminate the need to test on animals. This is only a small beginning of what is necessary to end these immoral acts. Animal testing in cosmetics is useless and cruel, and can be accomplished by other methods of research to end the suffering of animals.
Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
For years on end scientist have been using animal for testing of beauty products, ointments, medication, and other products people use in their everyday lives. This is argumentally a very sensitive topic that comes with a lot of debate. There are two sides of this topic, one being the scientist and people that see no harm in using animal when testing products. The other side being animal activist or people that see animal testing as animal cruelty. Personally, I am the type of person that sees animal testing as animal cruelty.
What is animal testing? Animal testing is the process of testing human products on animals. This process is often cruel and ineffective. They do many different tests on many different animals and see how they react to the product. An estimate of “26 million animals are used in the United States.” (Animal testing Pro-Con website 11/2/17).
People may think that animals that are in scientific labs are being treated fairly, but it is in fact not true. Animals have been treated with cruelty in scientific labs testings for humans to ensure the safety being exposed to the public. PETA, an animal research group shows how animals are being treated differently than what people expected the animals to be treated. Although some people might think animal testing is beneficial to humans which is being tested for medicals and cosmetics, in fact it is actually cruel for animals to be tested on medicines and cosmetics.
A person walking down an aisle at Target, picking up an everyday product such as Clorox, Air Wick, L’Oreal, or Downy should be horrified when they see the tested on animals label in fine print. Animals are used every year for commercial and scientific testing in the United States. A portion of these animals are mutilated, crippled, burned and abused every year. This disturbing fact is supposed to help humanity by guaranteeing safe medicines and products that were previously tested on animals. Scientists experiment on animals and by doing this testing, scientists are supposed to develop safe medical treatments or medicines for humanity; however, most of the products created are never actually tried on humans. These animals are suffering through horrible and inhumane experiments when there are better methods to ensure the safety of humans as well as animals. Alternative testing methods do exist. These alternative methods can replace the need for animals but, still, animals are being abused for testing. Animal testing needs to be eliminated for a number of reasons. Most experiments, which involve animals, are flawed and never used on humans, wasting the lives of those animals. Animal testing, which violates animal’s rights, is expensive, unreliable, and unsafe. It is important to know the horrific facts about animal testing as well as the alternative methods; therefore, humanity can better the economy, and not only human lives but also animals lives.
Animal experimentation has been around for many years. Throughout history, animals have been hurt in many different experiments. Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” This quote best express the idea that animals are important, and they deserve to be treated well. Animals do not deserve to be in captivity or harmed. The use of animals in cosmetic experimentation is unethical, morally wrong, and it should stop. There are three reasons that will help to support this claim. First, the amount of animals being used for testing is really high along with the extremely high cost of testing. Secondly, in the modern era of technology, there are alternative methods of testing
In today’s world there’s many controversies that many people don’t agree with such as animal testing for scientific use. Animal testing is a subject that is greatly divided, with a great deal of passion, emotion and ideas on both sides regarding the ethics of this practice. On the other side some are still at a cross-road with the subject, while agreeing with animal testing under special circumstances but not for other uses.
The dictionary defines animal testing as the use of non-human animals in research and development projects, esp. for purposes of determining the safety of substances such as foods or drugs. Today there are millions of mice, rabbits, cats, dogs, and other animals being locked inside barren enclosures in research facilities across the country. Like us, they can feel pain and fear, but also excitement and satisfaction. Close contact with animals shows that they look forward to some extents. They can get a lot of enjoyment from their lives, be it from basking in the sun, exercising, eating their favorite food, or interacting with one another. Certainly some animals don’t have the same abilities humans do. Regardless of their intelligence, their life still has value. We as humans have put our wants and needs before theirs and have used them as test subjects for our personal gain. They suffer through pain, extreme frustration, loneliness, and an aching to be free. Examples of animal tests include forcing them to inhale toxic fumes, force-feeding dogs pesticides, and rubbing chemicals into shaved or abraded skin. They endure these tests with
A subject which always raises an argument of strong feelings from both sides is animal testing. I believe that although it may have been necessary in the past, other methods are now available to test drugs and in the future scientists could develop more methods to stop animals being used altogether.
