Both Ted Hughes' poems, Wind and Thistles, show a theme of the power of nature. In Wind, Hughes shows the effects that a violent storm has upon a house and the landscape around it. In contrast, in Thistles Hughes presents a poem about people who are constantly oppressed by their enemy and, like the thistle, never give up. While both poems are about different things, they both explore the power that nature possesses. However, in Wind, Hughes writes more about the destruction of nature whereas in Thistles he shows how nature gives mankind strength to carry on. Ted Hughes uses the theme of ‘the power of nature’ in both Wind and Thistles. However, he uses different language techniques in each of his poems to achieve this. For example, in Wind, the poet uses onomatopoeia to describe the powerful force of the wind. The use of onomatopoeia in the quote ‘The booming hills’ gives the impression that the hills have been brought alive by the wind. When thinking about nature, Hans Christian Andersen wrote, “Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.” John Muir and William Wordsworth both expressed through their writings that nature brought them great joy and satisfaction, as it did Andersen. Each author’s text conveyed very similar messages and represented similar experiences but, the writing style and wording used were significantly different. Wordsworth and Muir express their positive and emotional relationships with nature using diction and imagery.
Through the use of narrative and metaphor, Terry Tempest Williams beautifully depicts her life story in a poetic memoir. She describes the daily struggles she faced with change in her family, while her mother battled with cancer that eventually led to her death. She also describes the fluctuating lake levels, and how they affected the birds that migrate in the area. Through her experiences with the birds she learns how to cope and accept her mother’s death. Eventually, she moves on with the birds and learns how to love and not be afraid of death.
As I read John Muir’s “A Wind Storm in The Forest”, I come to realize how passionate the author is pertaining to wind and nature. He uses descriptive language to bring out the full beauty of the winds. For example John Muir states in his narrative “A Wind Storm in The Forest” that “After one has seen pines six feet in diameter bending like grasses before a mountain gale, and ever and anon some giant falling” (526). The author gives winds the quality which no human could ever possibly obtain, and that is sheer power. However the author also describes the winds as always not beastly, but rather sometimes gentle and calm. In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
Throughout each poem, both Taylor and Wheatley are constantly describing the nature they see around them. In Taylor’s work, there are multiple examples of him describing certain aspect of nature around him in a poetic fashion as he describes the rivers like green ribbon and the stars as twinkling Lanthorns in the sky. The same could be said for Wheatley throughout his poem. Wheatley is constantly describing the nature he has observed around him in almost every single line. He is seen describing to the reader about how the sun sets on the horizon above the ocean or how the morning will glow with somewhat of a rosy charm to them. By using descriptive power such as this, both Taylor and Wheatley are able to show their admiration for their Creator’s works in creating such a beautiful universe so that they may thrive

This emphasis on nature reflects the respect and connection to the natural world the culture was trying to convey in their poetry. The colorful and illustrative descriptions of the physical world are indicative of the mindset and focus of these poems. Namely the fact that they were concerned with the world around us and the reality we experience as opposed to that of abstract concept of god or the supernatural as seen in other historical texts. This focus on nature is important because it sets the context in which the major theme of loss and separation originate from. In this poem the poet chooses to emphasize the passing of time in the choice of comparing the two seasons. Spring, in which life begins a new, and fall, in which the leaves begin to fall off and die. Percy Bysse Shelley’s Ode to the West Wind is a dramatization of man’s useless and “dead thoughts” (63) and Shelley’s desire from the Autumn wind to drive these “over the universe” (65) so that not only he but man can start anew. The thoughts are first compared to the leaves of trees but as the poem progresses the thoughts are paralleled with the clouds and finally the “sapless foliage of the ocean” (40). Shelley personifies himself with the seasons of the Earth and begs the West Wind to drive him away thus allowing him to lost and become the very seasons. In the end Shelley’s metamorphosis is realized and he becomes the very wind and the power with which he humanized throughout the poem.
There are many examples of figurative language associated with this poem, metaphors being one of them. For, example Hughes says "life is a barren field frozen with snow tone (Hughes 7).” In this stanza the speaker is comparing life itself to a frozen barren field. Another element of this poem is the theme. This poem teaches us we should hold onto our dreams forever.
Wordsworth and Hopkins both present the reader with a poem conveying the theme of nature. Nature in its variety be it from something as simple as streaked or multicolored skies, long fields and valleys, to things more complex like animals, are all gifts we take for granted. Some never realize the truth of what they are missing by keeping themselves indoors fixating on the loneliness and vacancy of their lives and not on what beauty currently surrounds them. Others tend to relate themselves more to the fact that these lovely gifts are from God and should be praised because of the way his gifts have uplifted our human spirit. Each writer gives us their own ideals as how to find and appreciate nature’s true gifts.

Symbolism embodies Hughes’ literary poem through his use of the river as a timeless symbol. A river can be portrayed by many as an everlasting symbol of perpetual and continual change and of the constancy of time and of life itself. People have equated rivers to the aspects of life - time, love, death, and every other indescribable quality which evokes human life. This analogy is because a river exemplifies characteristics that can be ultimately damaging or explicitly peaceable. In the poem, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers,” Langston Hughes cites all of these qualities.
I can picture him seeing life and feeling it in every flower, ant, and piece of grass that crosses his path. The emotion he feels is strongly suggested in this line "To me the meanest flower that blows can give / Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears."
