How can the truth hurt and heal? Tuth, a contradictory term, unveils many sides to a story, in some cases blurring the barrier between right and wrong. The novel, A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness reveals the power of truth through the life of a young boy named Connor. Struggling to come to terms with his mother’s fatal illness, Connor is guided by an ancient yew tree monster and his stories, which help him find peace within the toxic truth that plagued him through his mother's sickness. The monster is a symbol for healing, the grieving process, and truth. One of the most prominent scenes of destruction is when Connor demolishes his grandma's sitting room along with her precious settee and clock. In the midst of his actions Connor feels satisfied, unleashing the repressed anger from his mom’s sickness; however, is horrified to see the wreckage he caused. For Connor, breaking the clock symbolizes his desire to stop his mom from dying as well as the time they are both losing with one another. Also, his aggression symbolizes the changes people go through when dealing with difficult circumstances because it provides them with strength and control they lack otherwise. In addition, the monster helps Connor heal by giving him the strength to face his bullies. This is significant because his bullies torment him throughout the school year, distinguishing his mother’s sickness rather than him. As a result, Connor not only felt alienated, but also invisible because his identity was forgotten through his mom’s sickness. Similar to Connor’s situation, the monster told him the story of the invisible man, although not actually invisible, this man felt like it and called upon the monster to be seen. Mistakes can seriously impact the people who make them; however, the effects are not always negative. In the book, Whirligig, by Paul Fleischman, a teenage boy named Brent is the new kid in town and he faces some major problems with his peers. After being pushed around, treated like a pawn, and utterly rejected, Brent tries to commit suicide by taking his hands off the wheel of his moving car. Although Brent’s attempt is not successful, his actions still have a tragic ending- Lea, a young, kind, beautiful girl, is unlucky enough to be in the car that Brent crashes into. The car accident results in Lea’s death, but also the start of Brent’s magical journey of redemption. Brent’s task is to travel to the four corners of the country, build and display whirligigs, and keep Lea’s spirit alive. Though Brent may not realize it, the trip does influence him in many different ways, one major change being Brent’s newfound ability to create strong relationships with a variety of people that he meets during the course of his adventure. Throughout Brent’s journey, Paul Fleischman uses the people that Brent interacts with to portray the idea that friendships can be formed regardless of personality type, race, and age.
Flawed, contemplative, and challenging are three descriptive words to describe equality, or the lack of it. The lack of equality is a “monster” according to Cohen’s fourth thesis “The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference.” Cohen’s fourth thesis explains how differences among people in regards to race, gender, culture, etc. create “monsters” in society, even when people do not want them to exist. Throughout history we see monsters taking many different shapes and sizes. Whether it be a ghoul in the midst of a cold nightly stroll or a mass genocide, monsters are lurking everywhere and our perception of what monsters truly are, is enhancing their growth as a force with which to be reckoned. Fear of the unknown is seen throughout time, but as humans progress we are finding that things we once were afraid of we are less frightening than they once were. Monsters can evoke fear in their targeted victims rather than physically harm their victims. For instance, every year a new horror film is released with the next scary beast, but why do we call something a monster even if we know it is not real? Even certain people and creatures are classified as monsters, but are they really monsters, or do their actions speak of monstrous doings? In his article and book chapter Monsters and the Moral Imagination and chapter 5 of On Monsters, Stephen Asma suggests that monstrosity, as we know it, is on the rise as humans progress, and how we perceive monsters can often define monstrosities in itself, providing evidence as to why monster cultures are on the rise, and showing how human progress has evolved our perception of how we think on the topic that is monsters.

He has his whole life in front of him, when creates his monster. He creates the monster in the likeness of man with same need of love and affection as man. Although, this is his creation, he lets the monster down and does not care for him. The monster begins to feel neglected and lonely and wants desperately to have a human relationship. The monster turns angry and revengeful because he is so sad and abandoned. He wants Victor to feel the way that he does, all alone. The monster succeeds and Victor ends up losing all the important in his life and his own life. In the end, the monster dies and the need for human relationship becomes the destruction for both the monster and Victor.

For example, Victor does this experiment to “renew death” (Shelley, Frankenstein 32), to resurrect dead bits and pieces of bodies (what the monster is made out of) to create life from something already dead. Resurrection, which was something Mary Shelley dreamed of doing to her deceased daughter, literally, as seen in The Journals Of Mary Shelley with this short excerpt “Dream that my little baby came to life again” (70) it said. She also went on about it, showing that the thoughts of her deceased daughter did in fact plague her mind a whole lot “that it had only been cold & that we rubbed it by the fire & it lived –I wake and find no baby- I think about the little thing all day –not in good spirits”.
The beast symbolizes the growing fear that lies dormant, deep in the children’s souls and turns the boys into uncivilized beings. William Golding uses the beast to instill fear in the souls of the boys. While everyone is scared of the beast and questioning what it exactly is, Simon suggests something else. He agrees with everyone that the beast might just exist. But unlike everyone else, Simon comments, "maybe it's only us.” (Golding 89) This comment shows that the beast might just coexist in their bodies. The beast is just made up and not real, and only a product of their increasing fear of the unknown. The fear of the beast activates their primal instincts and makes them lose all grasps of civilization. Without the mindset to survive, the boys struggle to find food and build shelter efficiently. They slowly lose everything they had when they came to the island. The article “Monsters” is written by a brilliant writer: Anna Quindlen. It tells us about the children’s fears and the parents behavior, which should always be aimed to help the child to overcome his /her fear. The author starts with a description of a night house and it’s gloomy atmosphere, especially for a little child. The little boy tells his mother that he believes a monster to live under his bad. His mother is ready to tell him about her own fears, but she stops herself. Anna Quindlen describes the appearance of the monster, and the mother realizes that she has to tell her son that there is no monster. However, she knows that it wouldn’t be helpful, because, when she will leave the room the monster will appear again. She never lied to her children, thus, it was really a trial for her to tell her children that the monster didn’t exist. It is also hard for her, because she realizes that her son will, even more strongly, believe in monsters in future, as she does now. Because the real life monsters are everywhere, and their existence cannot be denied. In real life we can see the burglars, killers and other monsters every day. Mother decides not to teach her son, how to personalize his monster, she just leaves him alone. The woman believes that there are some things, which cannot be taught, but only learned on the child’s personal experience.
