Suddenly as I was reading I realized what I was going to write my essay about. The similarities between the author and I of this story were incredible. The selection I chose to write about from This I Believe: Life Lessons was called The Power of Sleep by Anne Hoppus. I found this essay very interesting because of the way she steps back and acknowledges not only herself, but the rest of the world as well. The author tries to improve upon herself. She admits that she would be a better person and “the world would be a better place if we were all less cranky, less irritable, less exhausted.” She is able to admit that she needs her sleep, which not everyone would be able to do. The author notes that “everyone needs to take back their nights,” maybe go to bed a little earlier and wake up a little later. She also makes everyone around her more miserable, including her husband, so she tries to get more sleep for other people’s good. She mentions that she would “stay up too late, stalked and driven by the to-do list that forever hovers above me.” During the school year, my brain cannot shut off at night, haunted by the to-do list and trying to figure out how I can juggle my busy schedule between sports and school. Finding a balance between those two has always been a bit of a challenge, so I am occasionally kept up by that as well. I noticed how she had mentioned that when she was able to shut of her brain, she was able to be far better rested. The days that I sleep well I am more focused at school and my other activities.
