In the beginning of the short stories “The Lottery” and “The Possibility of Evil,” both written by Shirley Jackson, the characters are portrayed as normal, ordinary people, which helps the reader relate the stories to reality. As the plots progress, however, the evil motivations of these seemingly innocent characters are revealed and the stories take a turn for the worst.
