The learning environment of universities we experience today greatly differ from what our parents used to experience. Technology is omnipresent in our daily lives and that the use of technology in higher education is on an increasing trend. In the past, instructors were using chalkboards and face-to-face interaction to communicate and convey ideas. However, with advancement in technology, exchange of ideas and communication can be done through the internet or other gadgets. Technology has a positive impact on higher education through the establishment of an effective teaching method, improved communication and accessibility, and the reduction of cost.

Currently, attending a research university is expensive. With the application of technology in higher education in the form of online courses and mobile learning, the cost of obtaining a degree would be lower. Bonvillian and Singer (2013) writes that even though big investments are required for online and mobile courses, the cost will eventually be lower as it is distributed among vast number of students taking that course. Online courses requires expensive startup cost for the development of good quality online videos and the development of a good server to attract students. With online class’ capabilities of reaching the global scale, the number of participants learning through online courses can be large which can lead to a division of the cost burden. Moreover, Waldrop (2013) writes that “when one professor can teach 50,000 people it alters the economics of education”. In other words, Waldrop expresses that with more people being educated with less academic staff, the cost of higher education would lower because of the spread of cost. A combination of technological and traditional approach to higher education can also lead to a more affordable alternative to higher education. Bonvillian and Singer reported Sanjay Sarma, director of MITx, that first order learning can be done through cheap online courses and second order learning can be done through a research university to save both time and money. The combination will lead to both effectiveness and efficiency to obtain all the knowledge similar to that of learning in a traditional method of education. A cheaper alternative to obtain a degree is supported by technology with the implementation of online and mobile
Many colleges have failed in achieving the perfect education by the excessive use of technology. Hacker and Dreifus support the use of technology in many cases, such as having interactive question where the software can give the chance to review your work or giving hints to find the right answer (182). Nevertheless, they are completely aware that the use of technology needs to be supported by a good instruction inside the classrooms (183). The University of the Ozarks’ technological resources out of class are a great advantage to improve the learning process in students’ free time. Online discussions, submitting assignments, and taking online tests are the most common online activities for students in this university, this activities challenge the knowledge acquired in class. Moreover, using technology outside the classroom provides the opportunity to use all the class time to go on new topics, to discus, and to answer questions. Nevertheless, the University of the Ozarks is not using all its technological resources appropriately. Most of the classrooms are provided with interactive boards, speakers, and projectors that are hardly ever used. If the university used every technological resource at its maximum, the positive results of learning would

The future of higher education is predicted by many to be highly digitized. The amount of technology used in this era: 100%. Everything will be based off of technology. Textbooks. Classrooms. Internet. These will all be digitized in higher education in the next 30 years. All textbooks will be online. But who would need those anyways? The technology company, Google, has introduced a brain chip that could possibly eliminate the need for an educational system. This is how it is explained, “This is a chip that users can implant in their brain that will search the internet the moment you think of something. The chip has the power to find information even before a user know he or she want the information” (Lake 1). Remember Sandra? The brain chip
Technology has greatly affected and impacted the way things are presented and taught in the classroom. Technology has had a large impact on the materials that are used and the way we use these materials to teach in the schools. Most everything that is used in today’s classroom has been a result of technology. All materials, including textbooks and the Internet, have been invented and have had some connection to the growth of technology in the school setting.
Technology has had a large impact on the field of education. The proliferation of multimedia resources and limitless amounts of information available through the Internet has fundamentally affected the learning process. Students no longer search through cards and stacks for magazine articles; almost everything is at the click of a finger. Multimedia resources are increasingly utilized in the classroom to help instruct students. Some professors are making conscious efforts to use new technology, so as to introduce and familiarize their students with it. The significance of technology in education is now being elevated to a new plateau. Education through the Internet, the great equalizer, may make it more widely distributed through the phenomenon of online courses. It is the thesis of this paper that online courses are not an effective means to educate traditional undergraduate college aged students (people from 18-22 years old).
Technology, either in form or gadgets in form of media or internet, if used properly can make big differences to make education learning far better than its current standards. Technology helps you in making things easier; everything is under your finger tips. It saves your time, you can more in less time, a finish a book you need hours or may be days, search the same thing on internet you fin results in just a fraction of second.
Technology affects every aspect of our lives. From romance to business, it has shown its presence everywhere. But technology has had a huge impact on education that cannot be denied, and has done nothing but improve the quality and quantity of education.
Many people think online education can be more expensive than a traditional school setting. Previous generations did not have the option for online learning experience, so why should we start now? An interesting point about online education is that LeBaron (2010) states, “The largest school in the U.S. is the University of Phoenix Online, with a whopping 380,232 students. That’s over 5x more than the largest public school, Arizona State University, which has 68,064 students” (para. 7). Despite the cost effectiveness, distance education is becoming the educational model of the future.
In Matt Richtel article, Growing Up Digital Wired for Distraction, he discusses the many distractions students being surrounded by technology which put a strain on focusing and learning. But in Susan Ferdon’s article, Positive Effects of Technology use in K-12 Education she states that technology based programs incorporated in the curriculum has positive effects on the students basic skills and critical thinking. Ritchel’s article focuses on the disadvantages of technology use, while Ferdon’s article focuses on the advantages of technological programs in education. Despite the different viewpoints of these articles, both authors are analyzing the benefits and ill effects of technology use amongst the youth.

In conclusion, technology has changed education for the better allowing access to unlimited resources, distance learning and broadening the means of communication. Technology creates a more encouraging environment and stimulates students to engage in something they may be familiar with. Technology has allowed people to know more and to collaborate with each other. Students have a great range of technologies which strengthens the relationship between knowledge and students. The technology used today throughout the world will only strengthen and advance the 21st century education system. With unlimited resources, students can take advantage of their learning and gain the most from it. Integrating technology into education promotes a better learning community.
In conclusion, the introduction of computers and the internet in the classroom has enhanced students' lives and impacted learning positively through improved learning and research experience. Computers have affected the delivery of education and enabled a wider access to it as well. Furthermore, they have increased flexibility, breaking the geographical barriers in education and enabled students to access education anywhere and at any time. This has offered new possibilities for learners and impacted on education performance and success significantly. The internet has created a vast source of information, which can be shared to foster student's achievements.
Some students within society need to have online learning to complete college degrees due to their lifestyles. While it is good to have online learning as an option if one chooses, it should not be the only option available to some students. Some may argue that online education is not creating discrimination within the educational environment. Furthermore, some may suggest that online learning is benefiting our students in society. There has been a breakthrough in time and geographical limitations of education via online courses (Ho, 2009).
Technology has many different effects on education, one of them being enhancing the students learning. Technology may enhance the students learning and may assist most students in achieving their academic standards. When technology and appropriate teaching methods are combined, technology may increase the academic achievement. Positive effects have been found in all major subject areas, from preschool to higher education, both regular and special needs students. Educational technology has been found to have a positive effect on a student’s attitude toward learning and on self-concepts. The introduction of technology into the learning environment has allowed the learning to be more student-centered, to encourage group learning, and helps to stimulate an increase in the student-teacher interaction. Technology has shown a shift from a focus on a student’s memorization to their problem solving. Through technology’s use, learning opportunities have become unrestricted by time or place, allowing lifelong learning. Student use of technology through communications can also help to enhance access to a career and continued education. Students are more likely to use a computer to get help because they can to it themselves. Technology is helping students to become independent.
