The Portrayal of Christopher Craig and Derek Bentley in the Film Let Him Have It Chris and the Newspaper Article
On the 28th of January, 1958, a 19 year old boy by the name of Derek
Bentley was hanged for the murder of Police Constable Sidney Miles on
the roof of a wholesaler merchant's store and shop in Tamworth Road.
Derek Bentley was not however the person who fired the fatal shot that
killed Sidney Miles. That shot was by Christopher Craig aged 16. He
got a sentence of ten years for the murder while Bentley, who didn't
actually fire the gun, got a sentence of hanging for the murder that
he did not commit.
The director sets out to prove that there was a miscarriage of justice
in this case and to help the Bentley's crusade to clear Derek's name
and to try and prevent this from happening again. He sympathises with
the Bentley's and wants Derek's name to be cleared so the family can
rest.
The director decides to set the start of the film during the Blitz
with Derek Bentley buried in rubble. This suggests that the being
buried under rubble during the Blitz has caused Derek to have brain
damage which would explain his low mental age and his epilepsy.
Straight away you see Derek having a fit which creates sympathy from
the viewer, sympathy which is drawn out over the duration of the film.
When this scene opens, it starts off with an establishing shot of the
road where the Bentley's live, at night during an air raid. The street
is all black and dark with the orange glow of fire in the background.
When Derek's father is searching for him in the rubble, there is a low
angle shot looking up from Derek to his father which makes the viewer
feel vulnerable and creates even more sympathy for Derek. It then
moves into a close up of Derek having a fit which, yet again, creates
sympathy from the viewers as they feel it is unfair for a child of
that age is suffering like that.

As a fan of cinema, I was excited to do this project on what I had remembered as a touching portrait of racism in our modern society. Writer/Director Paul Haggis deliberately depicts his characters in Crash within the context of many typical ethnic stereotypes that exist in our world today -- a "gangbanger" Latino with a shaved head and tattoos, an upper-class white woman who is discomforted by the sight of two young Black kids, and so on -- and causes them to rethink their own prejudices during their "crash moment" when they realize the racism that exists within themselves. This movie does provoke a dialogue on race that, according to author and journalist Jeff Chang, "has been anathema to Hollywood after 9/11. " During the first viewing of this movie, the emotionally charged themes of prejudice and racism are easy to get caught up in. (125) Privilege is inclined to white males through every facet of our everyday lives that inconspicuously creates racism through classism.

In the case of Bradley Cooper, a Google map discovered on his computer was the sole piece of evidence used to convict the ex-Cisco Engineer of murdering his wife (Bort, 2014). In this particular case, digital evidence played a very large role in the initial conviction and eventual appeal and retrial. Originally, Cooper was convicted for two reasons. First, a Google map was found on his computer zoomed in to the exact spot the body was discovered (Bort, 2014). The map search was timestamped on the day before the murder, suggesting that Cooper was scouting a dump location (Bort, 2014). Additionally, prosecutors argued that Cooper stole a router from Cisco systems, and used that device to fake a phone call from his already slain
