Recommended: An essay on the childhood of grandparents

John Daniel Buckingham was my granddad on my father’s side. He was born on April 15, 1948 in Decatur County, TN to Lennie Faye and Willie Green Buckingham. Daniel was the fifth of twelve children; he had seven sisters and four brothers. He went to first grade in Decatur County, but when his family moved to Gadsden, TN he was not old enough to attend school there. The next year he went to Gadsden school and went there all twelve years. Growing up in such a big family meant there wasn’t a lot of money. As a boy he helped work in fields with a mule drawn plow. Being poor he only got one toy as a child and dropped it down a well while he was playing with it. Daniel was very close to his brother Clayborn they were also close in age. They were happy together. She also had a son named Joe David. Daniel treated him as his own. On a trip to New Mexico, Judy rode with Daniel. They had a wreck when the brakes went out in his 18 wheeler. The wreck broke both their backs; this disabled them for a while. After healing he went back to driving a truck. Daniel was a family man and on Thursday he met his family at his mother’s house. When he was at home he taught Joe and John to work on vehicles and how to take care of things when he was gone. He always tried to teach his kids values and to be honest. Daniel always said a man is only as good as his word. In the 1980s, Daniel built a house with his brother. He was very proud of the house because it was big enough for his family. On November 10, 1990, Daniel’s first grandson, Axle Russell, was born. Axle was Stacy’s son. Daniel was very proud to be a grandfather. On October 1, 1994 I was born. My parents surprised my grandad by naming me after him. He was very happy that I would carry on his name. In 1995 Daniel lost his father to a heart attack. Also in 1995, he started having back pain. He went to the doctor, and they told him he had cancer. It was stage 4 lung cancer.
