Personal Computers: The Greatest Invention Since 1898 When you think about the worlds greatest recent invention what usually comes to mind? Many people would say that the personal computer and modern computers in general are the greatest recent invention. This is primarily because the world has experienced a boom in technology recently. You might even be one of the many people that consider the personal computer the best invention. While in recent years they have been used for social websites instead of doing actual computing they are still the greatest tool to man. Computers are used almost everywhere, from schools, homes, workplaces, and practically everywhere. Modern computers were created for military use but engineers had a different view on computers. By the 80s computers were a part of many wealthy households (The Personal Computer). Today it is estimated that per house there are five computers! Imagine how dumb some people feel today saying that computers would never be popular. Modern times have shown that computers are being used to connect people all across the world. The first social networking program that gained popularity was created in 1997 and was known as the AOL Instant Messenger (Curtis). While social media and networking were more so a part of the internet's history it makes sense to delve into it with a topic such as personal computers. These websites helped make personal computers personal! You might be thinking, "How does a website that can be viewed by anyone be considered personal?", and to that I say computers could now be filled with YOUR own information and they could be customized by YOU rather than anyone else. Nowadays social media is what the world runs on, unless of course you are from an und... ... middle of paper ... ...s free, Ubuntu and Chrome OS. It is truly amazing how quickly computers can change and become popular. They are what the world really runs on. Overall it is fairly apparent on why many people consider computers one of the greatest inventions. Many people would agree with this due to their many uses and advancements. Their numbers grew from 250 to nearly 30 million in just fifty years! Granted this was made possible with the commercializing of the internet but it is still a remarkable feat. While I doubt anyone would really feel dumb for making a prediction it is hilarious that someone would think that computers would never be popular considering that they did so much even when they were first created. Computers in my opinion are the greatest invention since 1898. I have many people that would agree with me and I will always stand by this as the greatest invention.
As the late 19th century progressed, technological ideas and inventions began to thrive. The notion that technology would impact life as we know it was an unbelievable idea to comprehend. People had no idea that something so simple such as the light bulb would become so vital to them and for century’s to come. Inventions such as, the typewriter, barbed wire, telephone, Kodak camera, and electric stove were created, however the major inventions created and use tremendously today are, Medicine, Electricity, and Transportation.
So many of the great ideas and inventions of the Technological Revolution are still apart of our lives today. Most of the things we are accustomed to are credited to this time period. Only a few major innovations occurred in the post-war era, such as: computers, semiconductors, the Internet, and jet engines. Even these ideas have been impacted by the thoughts of the Second Industrial Revolution. The world would not be nearly as advanced if it was not for the people in this time period.
People have been in awe of computers since they were first invented. At first scientist said that computers would only be for government usage only. “Then when the scientists saw the potential computers had, scientist then predicted that by 1990 computers may one day invade the home of just about ever citizen in the world” (“History” Internet), the scientists were slightly wrong, because by 1990 computers were just beginning to catch on. Then a few years later when scientists when to major corporations to get help with a special project, the corporations said no, because computers would just be a fad and they wouldn’t make much money off of it. “By definition Abacus is the first computer (the proper definition of a computer is one who or that which computes) ever invented” (Internet).
These statistics are amazing, but even more amazing is the development of computers. Now in 2005, in this short 68-year period, computer technology has changed its entire look; now, we use computer chips instead of vacuum tubes and circuit board instead of wires. The changes in size and speed are probably the biggest. When we look at computers today, it is very hard to imagine computers 60 years ago were such big, heavy monsters.
Attention-getter: Computer technology is by far the most relatable brach in the wide spectrum of technology. The invention of the first programable machine could be considered as one of the most significant inventions of the 20th century, and the essence of such creation has continued to spread throughout the 21st century.
If you ask someone what the greatest technological breakthrough of the twentieth century was, you are sure to get mixed responses. Some may say the television, others will say modern medicine, and
Let’s take a trip back in time and review the evolution of a computer company. It’s not IBM or Microsoft. This company is Apple Computers, Incorporated. In the year 1976, before most people even thought about buying a computer for their homes. Back then the computer community was only a few nerds building simple computers from hobby kits. When Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs sold a van and two programmable calculators for thirteen hundred dollars and started Apple Computers, Inc., in Jobs garage, the reach for success seemed far.
Humans have been progressing for thousands of years and we still are. If society were to stop emerging with new inventions, we would be very unhappy in the long run. The leading edge of technology is what makes us happy.
Throughout the years, there have been hundreds of inventions that have been created to change our way of life. These inventions have ranged from the beginning of time with the wheel through Thomas Edison’s invention of the light bulb, which had been used for years to keep houses lit. Possibly one of the greatest inventions in history that is still used today is the internet, which has made significant changes to how the day to day business is conducted.
Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.
In 500 B.C. the abacus was first used by the Babylonians as an aid to simple arithmetic. In 1623 Wihelm Schickard (1592 - 1635) invented a "Calculating Clock". This mechanical machine could add and subtract up to 6 digit numbers, and warned of an overflow by ringing a bell. J. H. Mueller comes up with the idea of the "difference engine", in 1786. This calculator could tabulate values of a polynomial. Muellers attempt to raise funds fails and the project was forgotten. Scheutz and his son Edward produced a 3rd order difference engine with a printer in 1843 and their government agreed to fund their next project.
Since the beginning of time, humans have thought and made many inventions. Repeatedly the newer one is better than the older. Our minds have created many remarkable things, however the best invention we ever created is the computer. computers are constantly growing and becoming better every day. Every day computers are capable of doing new things. Even though computers have helped us a lot in our daily lives, many jobs have been lost because of it, now the computer can do all of the things a man can do in seconds! Everything in the world relies on computers and if a universal threat happens in which all computers just malfunction then we are doomed. Computers need to be programmed to be able to work or else it would just be a useless chunk of metal. And we humans need tools to be able to live; we program the computer and it could do a lot of necessary functions that have to be done. It is like a mutual effect between us and he computer (s01821169 1).
We now use computers every day, as well as graphing calculators and other technological advances such as the scanner and the Internet. We use computers to do anything from typing English papers to checking our e-mail. My Grandparents never imagined things such as the computer, let alone the Internet.
Thousands of years ago calculations were done using people’s fingers and pebbles that were found just lying around. Technology has transformed so much that today the most complicated computations are done within seconds. Human dependency on computers is increasing everyday. Just think how hard it would be to live a week without a computer. We owe the advancements of computers and other such electronic devices to the intelligence of men of the past.
Ever since computers first came into production, they have been evolving. The Commodore 64 and Apple computers have dominated the very first computer market. Today, there are many companies in the computer industry fighting for technology supremacy. And since the beginning, every new generation of computers has dominatedover the old ones. When they first came out, each jump in technology took awhile, but nowadays, the technology changes daily. Fifth generation computers are overall much better than the previous generation.
