Fifth Generation Computers
Ever since computers first came into production, they have been evolving. The Commodore 64 and Apple computers have dominated the very first computer market. Today, there are many companies in the computer industry fighting for technology supremacy. And since the beginning, every new generation of computers has dominatedover the old ones. When they first came out, each jump in technology took awhile, but nowadays, the technology changes daily. Fifth generation computers are overall much better than the previous generation.
The computer has progressed in many ways, but the most important improvement is the speed and operating capabilities. It was only around 6 years ago when a 386 DX2 processor was the fastest and most powerful CPU in the market. This processor could do a plethora of small tasks and still not be working to hard. Around 2-3 years ago, the Pentium came out, paving the way for new and faster computers. Intel was the most proficient in this area and came out with a range of processors from 66 MHz-166 Mhz. These processors are also now starting to become obsolete. Todays computers come equipped with 400-600 Mhz processors that can multi-task at an alarming rate. Intel has just started the release phase of it’s new Pentium III-800MHz processor. Glenn Henry is
quoted to say “Megahertz is all people care about” and this is too true. Sys Technology recently came out with what they claim as the “fastest commercially available PC”. This computer runs at an astonishing 1000 Mhz or 1 Ghz. This computer is appropriately named the Cold-Fusion 1000 due to the KryoTech refrigeration unit that runs coolant through a pipe over the CPU to keep it at a cool -40 degrees Celsius. This computer is made for graphics creators and “ultra serious gamers”. This super computer will be available at the end of November for a steep price of $4299 American. Even as we speak, a new form opf processor is coming out that uses an Itanium chip made by Intel. But
don’t expect it anytime soon, “Itanium won’t be relevant for PC’s until 2003 at the earliest, more likely 2005.”
The next major improvement is the memory of a computer. This includes the hard drive and the RAM. During the same generation as the 386, there was also the hard drive and RAM. But these two components were not much then. The hard drive was about 100-300 megabytes and the RAM was about 4 megabytes.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an interdisciplinary approach to clinical practice that many organizations are being utilized. “The benefits of EBP, including greater cost effectiveness, and better patient safety, clinical outcomes, and patient and staff satisfaction are widely acknowledged” (Embedding a culture of evidence-based practice, page 14). In this paper, I will discuss how evidence-based practice is being utilized in the organization I work for, how nurses at the bedside are encouraged to participate in planning and implement evidence-based changes and what factors are available for nurses to use when implementing evidence-based practice. I will also discuss how nurses can suggest or help improve evidence-based practice and sustain a positive environment for EBP.

The divisions that will be covered are; the types of computers there were, the memory capacity of computers, the programming languages of that time, and the uses of the computers for that time. Information will be gathered from the Internet, from books, and from magazines, and from the encyclopedia.
These statistics are amazing, but even more amazing is the development of computers. Now in 2005, in this short 68-year period, computer technology has changed its entire look; now, we use computer chips instead of vacuum tubes and circuit board instead of wires. Reading “I am an English Major, Now What?” written by Timothy Lemire was an interesting discussion to explain to the students that their careers can be successful with English majors. This book was designed to help academic students understand the purpose of English skills and communication with the proper techniques to enhance achievements. The English major involves a variety of reading and writing, but people can find real jobs to help them achieve happiness in their life. In addition, the student needs to know who they are, what they can do, what they want, and where to look for opportunities. Colleges and universities around the world has a different set of requirements for the major in English, but to earn a degree in English, the student should be able to at least read two three-hundred page novels and write a five-page paper about the novel. “Which is better, AMD or Intel?” is a question that is constantly debated among people involved with computers. There are many reasons to choose one side over another, as both do have their advantages and disadvantages. Intel and AMD are the most prevalent processor production companies, which in turn creates competition between the two. This question is a by-product of that competition. Only by knowing each company and what their product has to offer, can a person make a decision as to what to buy to suit their needs.
When AMD’s k6 was introduced to compete with the Pentium!! Processor, it fell short in all areas, except one-price. It was the cheapest micro-processing chip (chip) on the market. The downside to this chip is that it did not follow the same format as Intel chips. It needed a different motherboard, a socket-7 motherboard. This hurt AMD’s chances at the beginning, but in early 1998 they unveiled their mighty K6-2 processor. The K6-2 Processor was “bigger, better, and cheaper.'; The processor ran on a 100mhz bus, while Intel’s chips still ran on a 66mhz bus, this made AMD’s chip faster. It also was nearly 16% cheaper than any Intel based Pentium!! computer.
We all know that when computers were first built, they were the size of a living room. They basically could do one thing, compute. Computers have come a long way from being as large as a living room to the size of an iPad. However, they just got smaller…really small.
The computer processor is the brain of the system. Our client requires a heavy punch, multi tasking brain. Due to his low income and student status, he does not have a large budget to put towards his computer. The AMD AthlonXP 1900 was chosen because of it's low cost and it's higher performance rating than that of the higher priced equivalent Pentium 4. The AMD AthlonXP 1900's speed is 1.6GHz. This means 1600Hz, which is a very fast processor. Amazingly, the clock speed of this processor is faster, albeit barely, than the Pentium 4 2.0GHz processor, and is much cheaper as well. This is important, as, for less cash, our student can afford a better processor.
Fashion discussed upon here is the current trends in the textile industry. Sustainability is still a topic which seems to be the responsibility of someone else. Through this article, I am trying to look at sustainability as a designers’ responsibility and the current trends and the customer mindset that prompts a designer to do so.
Processor speeds are measured in megahertz (MHz) and now come in speeds of up to 1000 MHz (1 GHz), which is very fast. This is almost ten times faster than the speed of most home computers, which average from 133 MHz to 166 MHz. At the start of the process, there are pesticides, dyes, and poor wages for the workers producing the goods. In fast-fashion producing countries like India, villagers who live around the plant have reported their water being one color one day, and a completely different color the next as a result of the tremendous amount of dye seeping into the soil and water supplies around the factories (Cox). By having these dyes consistently flooding their water, people’s bodies eventually react to the toxins and start decaying faster than they should. Clothing has never been produced this fast before, thus no one has had the chance to do a sufficient study on the health risks associated with consumption of the dye. Furthermore, while these issues appear to take place far from the wonderland of the United States, the U.S. is not as perfect as it seems. The pesticides used in cotton growing are eroding the soil because of their harmful chemicals (Cox). The cotton produced in the U.S. is then exported to countries like China and Mexico where it will become a product back on department store shelves, to be purchased by American consumers, where the fast-fashion cycle comes to an end in their closets. Often these clothes will not be worn more than just a few times before they are either donated, thrown away, or fall apart from being created quickly and cheaply. It does appear that donating clothes is the best solution, yet a large proportion of these clothes are sold off by the pound to companies that bring the clothes to other countries to be sold for a third or fourth time. While this might appear to be beneficial, much of the clothing is sent to Africa, where pieces such as North Face jackets have little
Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.
The computer evolution has been an amazing one. There have been astonishing achievements in the computer industry, which dates back almost 2000 years. The earliest existence of the computer dates back to the first century, but the electronic computer has only been around for over a half-century. Throughout the last 40 years computers have changed drastically. They have greatly impacted the American lifestyle. A computer can be found in nearly every business and one out of every two households (Hall, 156). Our Society relies critically on computers for almost all of their daily operations and processes. Only once in a lifetime will a new invention like the computer come about.
