The Perfect Idea
It was a true Alaskan night. The air was crisp and the road was covered with sand and pebbles embedded in the ice. Frost was beginning to form on the frozen green branches of the spruce trees and there wasn‘t a soul in sight. It was an early Sunday morning two days before Christmas and my best friend David and I had thought of a brilliant idea. I was spending the night at David’s house which was only about a block away from where I lived. As naive eighth grade students, we hadn’t counted on getting in as much trouble as we did for a nights worth of fun. It all started when David said, “Bobby, lets go pick up my girlfriend, Justine. My mom should be sleeping now. We can sneak out the garage door, put the car in neutral and quietly roll it down the driveway. After that, we can push it down the street and start it so my mom won’t hear.”
“All right. Can I drive?” I asked.
“ Sure,” he said.
“Yeahhhhhh! This is so awesome,” I shouted as we cruised down the highway thirty minutes later towards Justine‘s house.
“Who is as cool as us, David?” I asked with a huge grin on my face.
“Nobody,” he said laughingly as we both smiled without a worry in the world, listening to the bass vibrations pound on the back seats to the rap music.
“Where are we going?” I asked ten minutes later after we had picked up Justine.
“Lets go to the point,” said David, which was about fifteen minutes away located on a cliff near Cook Inlet.
“Okay,” I said in excitement.
Driving down the road, we spotted a police car on the side of the street with his lights off waiting for someone to ticket. We casually drove past him following all the laws as we headed towards the point. The point was located on a dead end road, and with our luck, it was already closed for that night.
“Shoot! It’s closed!” said Justine, who was scared because we had just passed a cop.
“What should we do, David?” I said nervously
“Let’s just be calm and go out the same way,” David replied.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yeah, yeah, he’s not going to do anything. Trust me,” he said with confidence.
“Okay,” I said, although I knew deep down inside something bad was going to happen.
Telemachus has many experiences on his journey to manhood. In Ithaca while Odysseus is gone Penelope is being plagued with suitors asking for her hand in marriage. Telemachus sees what a nuisance they are to his mother, and how much they are taking from his father’s palace. He wants to put a stop to this and comes to the conclusion that he must find his father, or at least some information
Just this past summer, one of my good friends was driving through Harrisonburg on his way home from work, when he noticed the one thing all drivers dread, flashing blue lights closing in on him fast. While pulling to the side of the road, he realized there was not one, but two police cars behind him. He knew he had only been going five miles per hour over the speed limit, so he was worried as to why two police cars had just pulled him over. After sitting in fear behind his wheel for several minutes, two cops walked to his car and informed him that he was getting a speeding ticket.
Throughout many years in the United States, there has been controversy over whether or not government surveillance and other technology is a violation of human rights. Ever since the publication of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, there has been an increase in debates on the subject. The novel itself exemplifies what a surveillance-based society is like, providing the reader with a point of view of what could happen to their own society. Discussion over the usage of information that the government has gathered has become one of the foremost topics being analyzed to this day. The information that is being viewed by surveillance would otherwise be private, or information that people would not want to be leaked out. Therefore, surveillance executed by the government and companies has become an infringement to the right of privacy, and United States citizens should take actions upon it before the world reflects the Orwellian vision of the future.
It was similar to the suburban street I grew up on, but in lieu of cookie-cutter houses with stale Bermuda grass, there stood wood cabins with yards covered in snow. The reddish-orange light emanating from the towering street lights pierced through a white fog and gently illuminated the area. Exiting the car, I was overwhelmed with a flurry of new sensations. The gently falling snow absorbed all of the sounds I was used to hearing in a residential area. The low hum of passing cars, birds singing from the trees, and the sound of blowing wind appeared to be muffled, even silenced, by the steady falling snow. I felt enveloped in a cool, but somehow familiar blanket. The smell of burning wood was coming from every direction, as each house I looked at had a thin, grayish plume rising gently from the chimney. The plumes represented the warmth and comfort of the many people I imagined to be nestled by the fire. Looking down the street, I noticed how freshly plowed it was. A thin layer of snow and ice-- like icing on a cupcake, or the glass top on my parent’s nightstand-- covered the street. But on the side of the street sat a pile of snow that could have swallowed me alive. Feeling taunted, I stood there and weighed my options. Chest deep mounds of frozen crystals begged me to dive in and lose myself. Preparing to succumb to the temptations before me, I was momentarily hindered by the fear of my parent’s wrath. But had that ever stopped me
Athena asks Zeus why he is against Odysseus. She asks the gods to help Odysseus get back home.
Wolfshiem laughed, "Oh you guys, I'm really proud of you, I'll take you to get
“I was so surprised! I couldn’t believe it was actually him. A rush of adrenaline went through my body. Along with being in shock, I felt some sort of relief and happiness.”
By the time Odysseus leaves Troy after the war, twenty years have passed, and his infant son is now a young man. As doubts about Odysseus’ fate begin to grow, suitors begin to swarm the palace, and impose themselves upon the Queen’s hospitality in an effort to undermine her finances and persuade her to marry one of them sooner rather than later, so that one of the might be King. While Penelope stalls for time, hoping for word of her husband’s survival, Telemachus struggles with his responsibilities as head of the household. Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, advised the young man to sail to Pylos and Sparta, in an effort to bring back word of his father’s fate. If Odysseus was dead, Telemachus was to build him a burial mound, and let his mother find a new husband. Still, Athena urged him to drive off the mob that was, quite literally, eating him out of house and home. (book 1,85) So with this newfound courage, Telemachus summoned the Ithacan assembly, and gave the suitors formal notice to leave his palace, demanding to feast elsewhere, or in each other's homes. He also exposed their main insults: how they wasted the palace's wealth in great parties, enjoying a life free of charge, and how they pestered Penelope with unwanted attention. The Assembly, however, would not be so easily swayed against their relatives, and thought it would be easier to simply look the other way. Telemachus vowed to bring back
Pies are often formed using a pastry shell which mainly served as a baking dish, storage container, and serving vessels. For hundreds of years it served as the only form of a baking container, essentially everything was a pie. The first pies, often holding meats were tall, straight sided, and included sealed on lids and floors. These pies were often called “coffins” or “coffyns” (the word at the time meant a box or basket). Pies that held assorted meats and sauce components were baked more like a modern casserole with no pan (the crust itself was the pan, the shell tough and inedible) were open-top pies known as traps. Small pies were kn...
The Phaeacians conducts Odysseus back to Ithaca. During the ride home, Odysseus tells his long journey up to that point. When Odysseus arrives in Ithaca, Athena informs him that the Suitors have taken over his palace and that the they plan to kill his son, Telemachus. She tested him earlier with the bow and arrow challenge. Speaking to Odysseus, still disguised as an old beggar, says, “Strange man, if man you are” (Homer 1561-1562). Still hesitant if it was him or not, Odysseus tell her of their secret they have with the bed and the olive tree. Only Odysseus and Penelope would know. Reunited with Penelope and his father, Odysseus is commanded peace with the slain
The first thing that happens in the Odyssey Part 1 is Odysseus finally leaves Troy and heads home at last. Poseidon then makes a huge storm to delay or even destroy Odysseus. When the storm battered Odysseus and his
and i knew that but in order for me to meet my friend i sped, but little did i know there was a state trooper parked on the side of the road with his radar gun. I was going 78 mph and did not see the cop, i kept driving and then in my mirror i seen blue and white lights. “Please no not again is what i was saying, no not me i wasn’t speeding.” So i kept driving didn’t think it was for me until he slowed down behind me.
Cakes have been discovered and recorded throughout history. To find the true ancestors of the cake as we know it, one would have to look back to before modern civilization to when people were still mostly traveling nomads. Their main source of sustenance had always been meat. However, people could not rely on meat alone to keep them alive since that depended upon always being surrounded by animals. When farming was started man began growing many different types of produce, one of which was wheat and grains. The most primitive people in the world began making cake shortly after learning how to make flour. In fact, the remains of their cakes have been found in the ruins of Neolithic villages. “The cakes found there were extremely simple and consisted of crushed grains that were moistened, compacted, and probably cooked on a hot stone.” (Stradley, 1) The cakes then were closer to crackers though than the cakes we know of now, but they were definitely the beginning of the idea.
“Don’t you think it would be funny if we actually did win this game?” I asked.
As we live in society today that barely read books, it’s terrible that their minds are missing the knowledge they need to be successful. Some people believe books are boring; they don’t have any pizazz or action. If I was Montag and I found out how people don’t read. I would Enlightment them just like how John Locke enlighten the people to take back their natural rights. I say if we don’t read this world would be chaos. Grad a book people! Books are valuable. Take this advantage so you could be successful. READ! If I find books interesting so can you. When you read just don’t judge a book by its color.
