Introduction:
Everyone’s surname has a history behind it, some surnames have been around since the very beginning of Christ and some have been moulded and reformed over the centuries. The Millar Clan has had quite a journey from Scotland all the way down to Southern Africa, to me. Some say it was originally another surname and some say that it was all made up, but I have researched the true and factual origin and formation of the Millar surname. Which I will give a brief over view to how it came to be today all the way up to me, Zane Millar.
Origin:
The surname Millar is a variant of Miller, it is a Scottish surname that came about in 12 Century. The name originated from ‘the miller’ who was an occupational name for one that baked bread, grounded corn and was the dweller by the mill. The mill was a very important piece of medieval settlements as it provided a method for individuals to bring their corn to be grounded into flour, and in payment ‘the miller’ would take a proportion of it for himself. In medieval times record came to state that millers would substitute grain of poor quality for the good grain that they were given to grind, and due to this dishonesty they were a very unpopular group of people. They might have been unpopular although they made up most of the wealthy people in villages in those times. The surname miller appears in all record found in England. The surname originated from the English word “mylene”, and the later “milne” but it mainly originated from the Latin Roman word “molere” meaning to grind and ground. Scotland was the birth place of the name although they prefers to use “Millar” and not miller as it was more Scottish. The name was related often trace back to or associated with the Clan MAcFlarlane...

Clyde Chestnut Barrow was born on March 24, 1909, into a family of four children. Ironically when the midwife told a local physician of his birth, the physician incorrectly recorded it as “baby girl Barrow'; in the Vital Statistics volume of the Ellis County Courthouse at Waxahachie.
After the Civil War, Custer was sent to the west to fight in the Indian Wars. His final battles dominate his prior achievements. Custer and all men with him were killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in the year 1876, fighting against Native American tribes in a battle that is to be known in history as "Custer's Last Stand”. According to Custer’s family letters, Custer was named after George Armstrong, who was a minister. Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio, to Emanuel Henry Custer, a farmer and also a blacksmith, and Marie Ward Kirkpatrick. He had two younger brothers, Thomas Custer and Boston Custer, who died with him on the Battlefield of Little Bighorn. His other siblings were Margaret Custer, and the weak, unhealthy Nevin Custer. Custer had several older half-siblings also.
The Mandan are an indigenous tribe native to North America. The Mandan’s are known for being one of the earliest tribes to live on the great plains of the Midwest. Unlike other plains Indians the Mandan were a settled tribe who lived along the Big Bend of the Missouri River in what is now called North Dakota. While most tribes that lived in the plains were hunter/gatherers who lived a nomadic lifestyle following their food, the Mandan were planters living mostly off their crops. Warriors left once a year in hunting groups to go out into the plains in search for Buffalo, which was not only their major meat source, but was also used for clothing and shelter as well.

The translation of the Quapaw name means “downstream people”. The tribe got the name after splitting from the Dehgiha tribe and moving down the Mississippi river. There were two tribal divisions within the tribe. The two divisions were named Han-ka or the Earth People and the ti-zho or the Shy People. The total number of clans with in the Quapaw tribe is 21, some of the tribal clan names include; Elk, Eagle, Small Bird, Turtle, and Fish. For my five words I chose; Bitter- ppahi, chicken- sikka, gray fox- to-ka xo-te, jay bird- ti-ta ni-ka, star- mi-ka- x’e. Before I listened to the audio file of the pronunciation I tried to pronounce it on my own; many of my pronunciations

Author Miller was born October 17, 1915 in New York City. He was the second of three children. Miller’s father was once a wealthy man and made his fortunes off of a women’s clothing manufacturing business. After the Stock Market Crash in the nineteen thirty’s, Millers fathers manufacturing business failed and went out of business. They could no longer live their lavish life style. Their lives turned downward in a blink of an eye. They sold everything they had and moved to Brooklyn. As a teenager, Miller would have to deliver bread every morning before school to help out the family. Yet, despite living in poverty, Miller ...
In reading chapter 1, of the “Ethnic Myth”, by Stephen Steinberg, explains how the U.S. has a dominant society. In the U.S. class structures, unequal distributions of wealth, and political power vary between certain racial and ethnic groups. A main idea in this reading is ethnic pluralism which is defined as a particularly diverse racial or ethnic group that maintains their traditional culture within a broader more common civilization. Throughout history, race and ethnicity have caused conflict and the struggle of dominance over land. In reading chapter 2, of Drawing the Color Line, by Howard Zinn, explains how early in history inferior statuses of races which lead to mistreatment lead to racism. The very start of slavery began when african american slaves were brought to the north american colony called Jamestown.

Throughout my life I have heard a wide range of stories from my parents. When putting this assignment together I have put these stories into account. Randall Bass, educator of English at Georgetown University, concurs that stories shape individuals ' personalities. Bass expresses that, "People infer their feeling of personality from their way of life, and societies are frameworks of conviction that decide how individuals experience their lives" (Bass 1). Social stories about family history, religion, nationality, and legacy impact individuals ' conduct and convictions. Personalities of diverse individuals originate from their societies. Narrating starts at home. Stories associate individuals to their frameworks of convictions. They shape individuals ' lives by giving them a model of how to live. Individuals get their most punctual learning from distinctive stories. (Bass)
