The Nightmare Before Christmas starts at the Halloween Village run by Jack Skellington. The village, which is mostly colored with achromatic colors, such as black, white and gray is located in the middle of a mysterious and gloomy forest where tombs are spread around, and only dim moonlight sheds on it. People living in this village have eccentric appearances, such as skeletons, witches, and golems. Like the Gothic Literature, scary forests and supernatural objects are the settings, giving the audiences a sense of horror. Since the main audiences of The Nightmare Before Christmas are children, the director may limit brutal descriptions of the Halloween Village. The characterization of the main character Jack Skellington reveals the dark side of human nature and potent for evil. Jack is a star of Halloween village who always leads Halloween parties successfully every year. Despite the creepy mood of the village, the characters living there still creates a joyful atmosphere. They anticipate for Halloween party and happy about the party prepared by Jack Skellington. On the contrary, Christmas Village is colored with white and bright colors revealing a mysterious and throbbing mood of Christmas. The contrast of the moods of two different villages gives audiences an impression that Christmas is better than Halloween. However, the author emphasizes the audiences that the important matter is whether people enjoy the party no matter what kind of atmosphere it is through Jack’s regrets on his behaviors.
