The Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is considered two-dimensional art. Some examples of two dimensional art is paintings, drawings and photographs. This painting is considered two-dimensional art because it was painted on a flat canvas and can only be observed in terms of height and width. This piece is not considered three-dimensional because it does not occupy space or have mass. Although this painting does not occupy space, it does imitate three-dimensional space or depth.

subject of this piece in particular, a diner, is realistic and its ideas are obtained from real life, or closely expresses a real-life situation that has or may occur (Cooper, “American Painter Edward Hopper in Chicago”). It is considered a narrative piece because it features people and landscape elements, buildings and people, about which one can invent a story. Although this painting is a narrative it is said to be timeless or ordinary so it broadens the stories it could be representing. This painting could have many stories be hide it pertaining to a diner, but the painting illustrates a diner open twenty-four seven in which three customers, all caught up in their own heads, have gathered together (Druick, “Entry”). When analyzing Nighthawks my eyes are automatically drawn to the diner, the people in it and specifically the man in the hat with his back to us.
The artist used colors and light to draw one’s attention to the diner and the people in it and then to the only character not facing the viewer. This emphasis with the use of colors and light means “that our attention is drawn more to certain parts of a composition than to others” (Getlein 127); when the emphasis is on “a relatively small, clearly defined area” (Getlein 127) this is called a focal point. The focal point in this piece of art is not only the brightly lit diner sitting on the corner of an empty intersection, but also within the diner, where the eye is drawn to the individuals in the diner. The man, whose face we cannot see, is almost completely hidden in the dark shadows. Like the bird, this “night hawk” is camouflaged by the low light and shadows in such a way that he almost vanishes into the night. With his distance from the couple, the impression is that the man is mysterious, bad or even sinister. With the absence of a door, to the outside, the people seem to be trapped or isolated. The other buildings and sidewalks are also examples of subordination by the artist, de-emphasizing the importance of the surroundings so that the diner becomes the strongest focal point in the
painting. Edward Hopper creates a feeling of solitude by creating layers of separation. The subjects in Nighthawks are all together in the diner. However, they are not interacting with each other. They seem to be in their own space lost in their own thoughts. The couple is sitting next to each other but we can tell by their body language and facial expressions that they are not engaging each other. They are together but separate, as is the other patron. The repetition of rectangular shapes and horizontal lines create a strong sense of structure further adding to the feeling of isolation. The diner has no visible entrance which adds to the sense of alienation. Having a layer of glass between the audience the diner creates another level of separation. The contrast of the light within the diner and the darkness of the city further divide the scene (J. Cooper). All these layers of separation create a sense of isolation giving the viewer a feeling of loneliness. When asked about Nighthawks Hopper said “unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.” (Druik, 58).
Carol Armstrong begins her essay by pointing out the two main points that come about when discussing A Bar at the Folies-Bergere. These two points are the social context of the painting and its representation of 19th century Paris, and the internal structure of the painting itself with the use of space. She then goes on and addresses what she will be analyzing throughout her essay. She focuses on three main points, the still life of the counter and its commodities, the mirror and its “paintedness”, and the barmaid and her “infra-thin hinge” between the countertop and the mirror.

Continuing to develop a perilous backdrop for the narrative, the author describes the night sky “as the perfect glow that surrounded [them] moments before faded into dark blues and blacks, silently watching.” Descriptions of the dark, watching sky expand upon the eerie setting of the apartment complex by using personification to give the sky a looming, ominous quality. Warriors Don 't Cry is a memoir written by Melba Pattillo Beals. It is about the author herself as a young girl named Melba, who grew up in a society of segregation. Nine students, including Beals, have the chance to integrate a white school called Central High. Mobs of white people were against it and would harass them and even try to kill them. Three elements used in this memoir are first point of view, character and plot. Furthermore, Warriors Don 't Cry has the theme of courage.
A warrior is a hero, a role-model, fearless, loyal, persevering, brave - there are few that are able to fulfill these standards. Yet Melba Beals, a fifteen year old girl, not only claims this illusive role, but cannot escape it. Through the journey into integration Melba acts as a dynamic juxtaposition, moving from a scared little girl to a fierce soldier, yet never truly satisfied with her position. This conflict arises from her personal, family, and religious values, the impact of integration in Little Rock, and her experiences during her time at Central High. The title Warriors Don't Cry is employed as a command as well as a way of life and later a regret as this memoir progresses.

In the novel Warriors Don’t Cry, nine students from Little Rock Arkansas are set out on the battlefield for integration. Melba Pattillo and eight other friends are challenged with starting off the integration of Little Rock’s Central High School. The students were signed up and asked to attend the high school in hopes of getting rid of segregation. Although entering high school may seem as easy as signing in and going to class, the test and trials the Little Rock nine went through shows a true test of determination. Comparatively, the “Arab Spring”, a movement of protests in the Middle East, has caused controversy all over the world. Citizens are rebelling against an unfair government in hopes of create a new way of life. Tired of all the disrespect, unjust, and oppressive government Muslims and Middle Easterners have created a battle of their own. While trying to create a better life for themselves, the Little Rock Nine and those involved in the Arab Spring uprisings have stepped on to the battlefield for fair human rights.

Another over-the-shoulder perspective shot shows Patrick's reflection off the Les Misérables picture frame, supplemented by the chiaroscuro, further supports how the image of Patrick that he sees is mostly obscured by the dark inner thoughts in his mind. The closeup shot of Patrick's face as he slowly peels off a facial mask showing that he wears a metaphorical mask to pretend that he is emotionally present, saying that he is "simply not there" even when people can interact with Patrick physically.
Eric Fishl’s Scarsdale is a painting that is done on three canvases. When placed together, they appear to make one whole picture. The focal point of the painting is the woman, dressed in a white gown and veil. It appears that she is wearing a wedding dress, since the dress is white and includes a veil. To the left is a cat and to the right is a dog. The woman represents the focal point, not only because she is the largest figure in the painting, but also because everything else is slightly in darkness. Fischl’s cat and dog can only be made out if one looks at the painting carefully. Fischl also paints the woman so that she almost appears to be floating in air. One can see that she is sitting on a chair, but the dog is directly under her, and he does not really use perspective to make it clear that the woman is not floating in midair.
I also think it is a great insight to why people in the town only know about fishing looking at the town through the picture one can see that the town's right of the see. The first setting introduced in the story is a subway. The subway is where the narrator gets the news that Sonny has been arrested. The gloomy atmosphere of the subway adds to the narrator’s sense of dread. The third line of paragraph one reads, “I stared at it in the swinging lights of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside.” The theme of darkness is also mentioned and reoccurs throughout the text.
