The New Alchemy
Alchemy cannot be easily defined due to the multiplicity of its definitions and the variety and diversity of its conceptions. It is often described as a religious and spiritual based science, most closely related to chemistry. Despite the connotations of mysticism, alchemical practice played an important role in the evolution of modern science. Alchemy itself is no longer practiced but there are modern day fields that could be considered the new alchemy. I believe alternative medicine could be considered the new alchemy. Alternative medicine consists of a variety of medical treatments or therapies that are not regarded as conventional and the effects and safety are not entirely proven. The term alternative medicine covers a …show more content…

Alternative medicine typically incorporates lifestyle changes into the treatment processes, such as diet changes or changes in exercise habits, to maximize the benefits of the treatments. In a study done by the Canadian Journal of Public Health, it was found that users of alternative medicine had more good health habits than nonusers. Similar to this, alchemists require a process of self purification in order for one to attain enlightenment. The process of self purification involves a kind of mind-body connection to shed the “toxicity” from the outside world and ultimately reach this state of enlightenment. This idea of mind body connection is used in certain alternative therapies to reach a better state of health. Biofeedback therapy is one of these therapies; this is a technique in which individuals practice and learn to modify their physiology for the purpose of improving health. Because of the required self adjustments required in both fields, alchemists and holistic practitioners can blame the subject for any failures rather than their work. Holistic practitioners can say a treatment did not have the expected results because the subject did not make the correct lifestyle changes and alchemists can say the subject did not complete the process of purifying one’s soul. This also makes it hard to prove or disprove the effectiveness of these …show more content…

In alternative medicine, researchers can see the effects but are often unsure why these therapies work, which is parallel to alchemists focusing on results. Aromatherapy/the use of essential oils is one of these therapies. The effects of the plant materials used in these oils, such as reducing anxiety and improving sleep, have long been documented but researchers still struggle to find out how and why these effects occur.
Safety is an uncertainty in both of these practices. During the time alchemy was practiced the adverse effects of mercury on one’s health were not known. It is likely that many alchemists died from mercury poisoning due to the excessive use of mercury in alchemy. In alternative medicine researchers are unsure of how safe the treatments are. Researchers are hesitant to approve these treatments because of this uncertainty of long term health effects.
Alchemy was also a very costly practice given that expensive materials were used and sometimes people were taken advantage of. One could argue the same with alternative medicine. Therapies that use things such as herbal remedies can be very costly due to the particular products used and processes used to make them
