Even though Amir is the older brother, he was very much a negative influence on Hassan and he knew it too. By shining a mirror into the neighbour’s homes, throwing pomegranates at Hassan, reading to him but giving the wrong definition for a word. Sibling relations provide an important context for the development of children’s understanding of their social, emotional, moral and cognitive worlds (Howe, Recchia). Hassan’s role in Amir’s life was one of a servant but also a best friend. Hassan’s countless sacrifices towards Amir can be counted towards the feelings of affection and support when Baba disliked Amir’s choice of writing stories, Hassan was there to support him and give him love. When Anna felt she was being ignored, she went to Jesse because Kate was always in the hospital but when Kate’s healthy, she runs to Kate’s side every single time. Siblings may give you a sense of belonging, but that sense of belonging can disappear when conflict arises. Healthy relationships in families are wanted but are hard to achieve (Brown P4). Conflict happens everywhere in families, but the consequences are more prevalent in siblings. Many times, however, families become blocked in their relationships by hurt, anger,
It seems that every sibling doesn’t always have a great relationship with their older or younger siblings. In the movie “Real Women Have Curves”, we have two sisters, Anna and Estella, who seem not to get along in the beginning because of their differences, but at the end they become the best of friends because they have similar dreams and learn to support each other. The advantage of Anna and Estella’s relationship is that they benefit from each other. The whole story is that you don’t always realize how much you have in common with your siblings until you realize that you have similar dreams and can be there for each other.
The family unit has always been an integral part of every person’s development. Naturally, the parental figure plays an overwhelming influence in the maturity of the child, but sibling interaction can be just as great. Often sibling rivalry, or alliance, outlines this connection as a person carves a path into social peer groups. This articulation of sibling influence can be understood by examining the short stories “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin, both accounts of brotherly experience shown through separation and drug abuse.
Most children experience agony and hope as they face the struggles of sibling rivalry throughout their childhood. This situation has been experienced by children, of whom may or may not have siblings, for hundreds of years. Several stories represent this crisis, including the Biblical story of Abel and Cain which was written over 3000 years ago. Abel of whom was forced to be Cain’s ash-brother. Cain had developed an intense feeling of jealousy of Abel when his offering to the Lord was rejected while Abel’s was accepted. This caused him great agony, but he wasn’t the only one. The fairytale “Cinderella” encompasses the ideas of sibling rivalry as well as the agonies and hopes that correspond with it.
In the Kite Runner Amir is fighting for his Baba’s approval. There were many times where Amir had felt he had done really well and baba just brushed it off. When Amir was growing up he loved to write stories and he believe he had done really well, his baba though didn’t think much of it. It seemed Amir was really frustrated being treated the same as his servant Hassan, which may have made the struggle a little bit harder for Amir, but that much more worth it if he could just get his baba to approve of him. When Amir was older he had written books, and went to school. If Amir would have known his entire life that Hassan was also his half brother, it probably wouldn’t have been such a difficulty, or such a misunderstanding on trying to get his baba’s
Hassan and Amir were not just best friends; they were brothers. Both their mothers have vanished from their lives but they both thought they had different fathers. In this case it wasn’t true. Amir’s father, Bubba, had been with a servant; and Hassan was born. Both boys had a lot in common. Amir’s mom had died giving birth to him, while Hassan’s mother ran away less than a week after being born. They depended on their fathers care for them.

In conclusion, co-dependency and rivalry is very common in the world today. Though it is not a big issue out in the open, it is an emotional attachment that only one can define. In this short story the two main aspects of having siblings is the theme which revolves around codependency and rivalry. The contrast between these two coming-of-age works and their protagonists’ different resolutions highlights that mentors make the ultimate difference in characters’ journeys to adulthood. Amir’s dead mother and his hopelessly aloof father do not provide him with much guidance or love; their inattention to Amir is what causes him to seek alternate mentorship. After his mother dies giving birth to him, Amir is left alone with only one parent - Baba, his father. One would assume that as the sole members of their family, father and son would be close, but instead they have a distant and chilly relationship.
As a result, they know each other very well, like a brother and sister do. They know each other’s weaknesses and strengths. They get in trouble together but also get each other out of trouble too. “Siblings are people we share moments with, the people who teach us about fairness, cooperation, and unconditional love through every hardship we face. ”-Pamela Dugale.
Family is basically a sample of society. Extended families are always cooperative and helpful. One will never feel alone with their family and siblings. This is how the society should behave. According to Brazier (2013), that the child will always have a sibling to turn to if the parents have separated or died "after all, a sibling is for life, not just for childhood" (P.3). Moreover, big families share their experience from one to another. This makes them less stressed while trying anything new or having a new stage in their lives. It also improves their skills. According to Brazier (2013), researchers have shown that children with their siblings will acquire "stronger soft skills and keener emotional intelligence than single children". In addition to some of the most recent evidence even suggests that a child who has a brother and a sister will gain evolved skills of language and do better at exams. When my sister and I were little, we never got along and when we did get along we usually managed to end with up fighting and screaming at each other. Now that we are older, I realized that probably every thing we fought about was probably out of pure ignorance. Another thing I realized was how similar our relationship was to Raina and Amara's relationship. Who are Raina and Amara you might be asking? They are the famous sisters in the book Sisters who are notoriously known for fighting with each other. Some of you are probably thinking it would be such a blessing to have a sister and if I had a sister I would do everything with her. Well that's what Raina thought too.
