American pop culture has been plastered all over billboards and television screens, and heard on radios for many years. This pop culture take over has not only been seen in the United States over the eras, but has also been polluting countries all around the world with it’s constant influx. Not only is it giving the native people of those countries the wrong impression of what America is like, but it is also not what these countries want. Many countries wish to keep their cultural heritage strong without the negative effect of America’s culture on the newest generation. For many countries, the constant push for westernization is putting a strain on the culture. Hollywood is not portraying, to the rest of the world, the ideals of America. …show more content…

This idea is referred to as cultural hegemony, “...: the idea that American culture, as represented in widely exported American movies, TV shows, fast-food restaurants, and brands, is overwhelming the traditional cultures of other countries.” (Source E). In many countries around the world, the fear that this generation is losing their native culture is growing. In Iran, the country’s parliament sends out constant reminders to not be a part of the, “...encroaching ‘tide of godlessness’...” and become “... rappers and West struck youth.” The people are afraid that American pop culture is going to ruin the 6,000 year old culture that they all grew up with. The pop culture being exported is affecting the children, the next generation, of people among the culture. The children are being targeted by the american pop culture, the children are being exposed to western culture and accepting it because of all the gadgets and wonder surrounding it (Source D). People are worried about the growing chance of their culture being “smashed”. They do not, “...want to be washed away by American or any other culture.” (Source G). Despite all of this, some argue that by exposing other countries to our culture, we, America, is actually benefitting them in the long run. For example, exposing a country such as Hong Kong to shows or movies that exemplify our government and our rights, may teach them about other countries. However, by doing this, people from Hong Kong may feel that they can rebel against their government (Source B). Source B shows a pro-democracy protester that is carrying a symbol of one of America’s most patriotic superheroes. The protestor is making a statement but, is being arrested in the process. American pop culture, may educate other countries’ citizens, but what good is that
