Ideology is “a system of meaning that helps define and explain the world and that makes value judgments about that world.” (Croteau & Hoynes, 2014). According to Sturken (2001), the system of meaning is based on the use of language and images or representation. Therefore, media texts come along and select what is “normal” and what is “deviant” to the extent that this hegemony of constructed meanings in the viewer’s head becomes “common-sense” (Gramsci in Croteau & Hoynes, 2014). From this standpoint, what America claims to be pop culture which is omnipresent in media internationally, is a representation, through “politics of signification” of what is right or wrong (Kooijman, 2008). Therefore, the viewer will associate bullying with ‘coolness’ as they showcase it when students were asked about Regina Georges, and one of them said “One time she punched me in the face and I loved it”. First, Cady is assumed to be black by her teacher when she mistaken her for an African-American girl on the first day of class and by Karen who is intrigued by her nationality “So if you are from Africa why are you white?”. Second, the name of her native country is ignored because Africa is often portrayed as one big rural country with jungle animals. As stated before, these statements are intently not directly offensive because they are addressed to white girl but this doesn’t make them less racist. On another hand, one of the high school’s clique is the “unfriendly black hotties”, this categorization entails that they are all as popular as the Plastics but are unfriendly because of their ‘un-whiteness’- even though Regina, Gretchen, Karen and Cady are as mean if not meaner. Asians are also targeted in this movie, as cool or nerds. It’s obvious that they are Vietnamese but are still labeled Asians following the “us vs. them” strategy. The representation of race in this film implies the primary rule to be popular which is to be white or else the person is considered less valuable. The Sociologist and the Movie Man Gerry Garibaldi, a high school teacher, and Michael Kimmel, a professor of sociology, both explain how the consequences of the feminist movement are harming boys in school and later in life. Kimmel and Garibaldi present their views on the gender education problems in their articles “How Schools Shortchange Boys” and “A War Against Boys”. Both make passionate arguments and prove that boys are at a disadvantage in modern feminized classrooms. Kimmel’s arguments about the problems boys face in the American educational system are more convincing than Garibaldi’s, because his style of argumentation is more objective, supported by more statistics, and provides an unbiased restatement of opposing views. Omi claims that media and popular culture are two of the main culprits for the dissemination of a segregation ideology through music, movies and TV shows (Omi 114). According to Omi, media has the “ability to reflect the dominant racial ideology” and to “shape that ideology in first place” (Omi 115). These two sentences imply that Omi is not just blaming on media, but also on white people, who dominate communications and provide a better image of themselves in order to maintain the status of dominant culture. The issue of the relationship between the mass media and the popular culture has always been a controversial issue in social sciences. Though, advocates such as John Fiske, argue that popular culture is actually the creation of the populous itself, and is independent of the capitalist production process of the communication sector.
