In November 2007, Indian government launched a new pension program, the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme. According to HelpAge India’s report: The social Pension in India-A Participatory Study on the Poverty Reduction Impact and Role of Monitoring Groups: “The pension amount was raised to Rs 200 per month per beneficiary, and the State governments were allowed to contribute over and above this amount. In addition, eligibility under this scheme was now based on older people age 65 and over who are living below the poverty line ($ 1.25/day).” However, not all senior citizen are covered by this pension. Unorganized workers (94% of the workforce) do not have any kind of pension. Therefore, HI is actively advocating a universal pension. HI has been advocating and putting great effort on pushing forward a universal pension system. The highlights include: “A Universal and Non Contributory Old Age Pension System to be established immediately by the government with a minimum dignified amount of monthly pension not less than 50% of minimum wage or Rs 2000/- per month, whichever is higher”, “for women, eligibility age for pensions should be 50 years”, “the monthly pension amount be revised every two to three years and changed every six month based on inflation – in the same manner as is done for salaries of government servants”,
As I have read the primary sources, it became clear to me that African Americans and Indians wants to be treated equally and fairly. As I read "An Indian's View of Indian Affairs" by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, the main thing that caught my attention was "Treat all men alike. Give them the same laws." This caught my attention because he clearly talked about the way he was tired of white men having all of the authority and the chiefs who would always talk about equality or fairness, but fails to show it with their actions. Also, he went on to say that everyone should be treated as one because essentially everyone is one and was born the same way. Basically, his view was an argument to state that it's not right to treat one person better or
The push for Congress to pass legislation protecting the rights of employees and their retirement was inevitable. Retirement plans are extremely important for all working individuals. State and local government agencies, as well as nonprofit organizations and institutions are eligible according to the Act (Department, 2006) as long as they provide funds for older Americans. The Act also states that a tribal organization for an Indian tribe is eligible only if the organization represents fifty individuals aged sixty and above, and if it demonstrates an ability to deliver supportive services—which includes nutritional services. Similarly, an organization representing Native Hawaiians must also serve fifty individuals aged sixty or higher, and must demonstrate their ability to deliver supportive services, emphasizing nutritional services.
The Australian government will increase the age pension from 65 to 70 by 2035(Australian Department of Human services [AU]). This announcement has lots of challenges for Australian people who are under 50; some people support the rise and find it beneficial for the future economical life. However, others are against the announcement as it has lots of concerns for their future plan, as they have to work longer to save more for their retirement. The current population ageing put pressure on the young workers who support retirees and their families, at the same time it affect the economic development. So the rise of pension has advantages and disadvantages on the future life standard of most Australians. It is beneficial decision from the government to provide a productive and qualified future life.
Imperialism in India British imperialism in India had many positive and negative effects on both the mother country, Britain and the colony, India. Many people would argue which effects were more prominent in these countries, and some would agree that they were equal. But in both cases, there were actually both. In India, the British colonization had more positive effects than negative. For instance, when the British colonized India they built 40,000 miles of railroad and 70,000 miles of paved roadway.
Certain cultures that live at or below the poverty line prefer this type of assistance for their elderly family members because it allows them to have someone meet them at their home. This convenience is a big factor and provides the elderly with a way to fulfill their communal culture by living out their time at home among family, while still receiving any necessary assistance for health checks or IADL’s. This improves their quality of life by meeting their needs in a different way. These alternative methods to older adult care are more popular among minorities and cultural groups (Bookman & Kimbrel, 2011).
According to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, there will be a need for assistance with activities of daily living (ADL's) increases dramatically with age. Only 2.6 percent of person’s age 65-74 need assistance with personal care compared with 31.6
providing retirement benefits to those who have reached the ages of sixty-two or age sixty-five,
The health care industry is positioned for the global market place. It is expected to grow exponentially in health-related services for the elderly. China’s population of individuals over sixty years old is expected to grow to one third in the next twenty-five years. Though their culture view aging somewhat differently than in United States, they are interested in the attractive senior living options established here. Senior care encompasses private care facilities, home health care, products, drugs and medical equipment. As the largest health care market in the world American companies have made significant global inroads over the last two decades. These businesses are positioned to offer additional services directed at retirees, and children who will be responsible for their parents and potentially their grandparents as well.
...6 in 2050” (Hooyman & Kiyak, 2012, p. 15). Comparatively, in 1900 the average life expectancy was 47 (Hooyman & Kiyak, 2012, p. 15). This is relevant with regards to ageism in that the need for trained health care professionals in the field of gerontology will be astounding, but because of the current perceptions of older adults there is a gross lack of these specialty providers. “It has been estimated that by 2030, 3.5 million formal health care providers-a 35 percent increase from current levels-will be needed just to maintain the current ratio of providers to the total population” (Ferrini & Ferrini, 2013, p, 15). The prediction is that all health care providers will spend at least 50 percent of their time working with older adults; increased competency while eliminating ageist attitudes is paramount for quality health care (Ferrini & Ferrini, 2013, p. 15).
Today, world’s population is aging at a very fast pace and United States is no exception to this demographic change. According to the U.S Census Bureau, senior citizens will be accounted for 21% of the American population in 2050 (Older Americans, 2012). Although living longer lives may not seem like a negative sign, living longer does not necessarily mean living healthier. Older adults of today are in need of long-term and health care services more than any generation before them (Older Americans, 2012). Because of the growing need for senior care, millions of families are facing critical decisions on how to provide care for their parents. In addition, declining birthrates may cause people to have less familial care and support as they age. To be able to provide the necessary care for senior citizens government funded long term care insurance program is needed.
Whether disabled or aging, when physical limitations occur or mental capacity declines, it can be a stressful and emotionally difficult time for everyone. ...an HDI of 0.36. These discrepancies in levels of development have led to an exodus of people, from less developed areas to the areas that have been benefitted by development. This situation seems to depict that predicted by the Dependency theory in which the developed countries progressed due to the exploitation of peripheral nations; the same seems to be happening in India. The states that are wealthier are exploiting the poorer states. It would be difficult to imagine India having the economic status that it now has, if it was not for the terrible working conditions and wages at which the Indians are willing to work and the massive work force available in the country. Now that India has seen economic growth the government should start taking care of its citizens by implementing policies that protect the labor rights of the workforce.
