The Unwarranted War Against Mexico The Mexican-American War played a crucial role in the history of the U.S giving it the last third of its land and contributing to making as diverse as it today, but was the basis of the war ethical. To know this background information on the war must be known. The Mexican-American War was a 2 year war fought over a border dispute which ended in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which gave America the the western territory it has today. So with that in mind, while the War against Mexico gave america very valuable land, the war itself was unjust due to the Texas revolution wasn’t itself just, Manifest Destiny pushing americans to fight , and the promotion of slavery in the war. A major reason

A piece of evidence that affirms the War was fought for slavery is when Joshua Giddings says “...that it has resulted from a desire to extend and sustain an institution on which the curse of the Almighty most visibly rests. Mexico has long since abolished slavery. She has purified herself from it’s crimes and its. What Joshua is saying is that Americans and their leaders have developed a need to spread and keep slavery going and describes it has one of the worst things committed by man. Since Americans think parts of Mexico belong to them it most likely makes them even more angry that slavery is not being put to use in “their” land. This “need” for slavery ultimately pushed leaders to fight even harder in the Fight on Mexico. Another piece of evidence that corroborates the fact that the Mexican-American War was fought for slavery is in an article by Benjamin Lundy who was an abolitionist( someone who opposes slavery) that argued against the American Invasion of Mexico “The immediate cause for this war-led by the slaveholders of this country-...has been to grab the large and valuable territory of Texas from the Mexican Republic in order to re-establish a SYSTEM OF SLAVERY. “ This means that the leaders of the war who are known slave supporters, have been fighting and telling their troops to fight for slavery. How can one justify a war fought for such …show more content…
While this is true, this statement pays no regard to what other things happened because of the described actions. Think about the Mexicans and what they went through after mexico lost the war. Those that stayed had to learn a completely new language in order to communicate with most of the new population. Those that had to leave to the new territory of mexico had to leave everything behind, their businesses and homes and they may not have been prepared to make this move which would cause them financial. Also Mexico lost money since they rich land of the west was taken meaning much of their revenue was lost. This no doubt harmed the economy and its workers who are now jobless. So remember, when a country gains land another country loses much
The Mexican-American war was not of religion, but of the sole purpose of acquiring land. America was then able to rapidly increase in population and
One reason the Mexican War was justified was the United States Manifest Destiny beliefs. Evidence supporting this reason is that, according to Document A, John O'Sullivan said it was God’s choice if the United States will grow by taking or buying territory. Also, the annexation of Texas helped grow the United States which gave the
As Americans, we’ve taken far greater than just tacos, burritos, and nachos from the culture of Mexico. Through America’s past relations with Mexico, America has taken large amounts of land, and a sense of power from country south of the United States, Mexico. In 1846, James Polk, a former president of the United States, declared war on Mexico. There was confusion between Mexico and America. Land was being traded, new borders were being formed, but disorientation was aroused causing conflict. Differences in culture, beliefs, and even national law led to dispute among these two countries, making it even more difficult to reach a treaty of peace, or a deal. The Mexican-American War was not justified because it was an excuse for gaining land,
Was the United States Justified in Going to War with Mexico? The Mexican War, or the "U.S. Invasion" (according to the Mexicans) started on April 24, 1826. Many Americans and Mexicans died fighting in the Mexican War. This war was nothing compared to the Civil War just 15 years later but it was heart breaking for everyone at that time. At the end of the war half of the country of Mexico was taken by the United States as a war prize. So, was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? I think the U.S. was unjustified to go to war with Mexico because, the United states provokes the war and starts the war, the only reason they had the Mexican war was to gain land and lastly Texas was stolen from Mexico by southern slave owners.
Those people decided to side with Mexico. One brave man from Massachusetts took his beliefs to the next level. His name was Charles Sumner. He served 24 years as US Senate of Massachusetts after he wrote an article that he titled, “Objections to the Mexican-American War.” Sunner states, “...Our newspapers excited the lust of territorial robbery in the public mind...might justly charge our citizens with disgraceful robbery....” Sumner is referring to the United States robbing Mexico of territory. (Doc D; par 2) Many of the Mexicans also agreed with Massachusetts and many other Americans. They say, “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a traveler” (Doc
The Franco-Mexican War The Franco-Mexican War was a war fought by two very different countries than they are today. The war was fought over reasons that seem very unlikely to arise ever again. between these two countries. The war was fought over gaining territory, group thinking, and pure human. Nature.
One reason that the Mexican War was not justified was because the Americans invaded Mexican land and went beyond approved borders. “The congress of Texas, by its act of December 9, 1836, had declared the Rio de Norte to be the boundary. ” This quote shows that there were set boundaries and Americans made up their own without Mexico’s permission. “Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico City to try
The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because America came in and broke the laws, there were no borders for Texas, and America stole Mexico's land. Tejanos(Mexicans) invited Americans in to settle in Texas. Americans also known as Anglos Broke most of the few laws Mexico made. There was a war for the independence of Texas. A couple years later, President Polk went to go ask Mexico for some of their land because of their belief called Manifest destiny.
The Spanish-American war was the first and biggest step that the United States of America took toward imperialism. It was the war that secured the US as the most powerful country in the world. This war was a benefit to the USA because we gained land, gained respect, and taught a lesson to one of our enemies. In addition to this, the losses that we suffered were almost nothing compared to other conflicts or wars. The Spanish-American war was by no means for the sole purpose of gaining land and respect, the United States freed an oppressed country and took pieces of land that were better off under US control.
THESIS : “ The United States didn’t want to get involved in the Spanish-American War, but was dragged into it due to yellow journalism, they wanted to control the seas, and wanted complete control over Cuba.”
Hi I'm doing my report on the Spanish American War. In the following pages I will be giving information on how and why the war started, major battles, and the results of the war. I will also include stories from people on the battleship Maine.
Beginning in 1845 and ending in 1850 a series of events took place that would come to be known as the Mexican war and the Texas Revolution. This paper will give an overview on not only the events that occurred (battles, treaties, negotiations, ect.) But also the politics and reasoning behind it all. This was a war that involved America and Mexico fighting over Texas. That was the base for the entire ordeal. This series of events contained some of the most dramatic war strategy that has ever been implemented.
As one of America's great white fleet ships lay on the bay of Havana Cuba, people started questioning the reason of the explosion. After a couple of days, the Press was informed of the tragic accident, that could have been an attack on the United States. Once the Press was involve there was no doubt it was in accident as the Yellow Press claimed it was an attack. The sinking of the U.S.S. Maine not only claimed one of the Great White Fleet, it also caused over 250 casualties. Although the tragedy of the maine could have sparked the war, there was more reasons why the U.S. declared war. America disapproved of spain and everything they were doing in territories controlled by Spain. Not only was Spain destroying the territories that they controlled, they contravene the Monroe Doctrine. It wasn’t always the bad things that caused the United States to invade Cuba, they also wanted to help them and even govern Cuba to an extent.
mobilization as an attack toward Mexico. According to Jesus Velasco-Marquez from a Mexican Viewpoint, he states that “In the eyes of the Mexican government the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico...As a consequence, the Mexican government reaffirmed the instruction to protect the border,....an order which led to the battles of palo Alto and Reseca de la Palma.” Another thing he stated was that “ From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the US was inadmissible for legal and security reasons.” This evidence shows the US was not justified in going to war with Mexico because the US army was advancing on Mexican land which in Mexico’s eyes was a front on attack and they also saw saw the annexation of Texas not valid because even after Texas had won its independence, Mexico still saw it as a part of its
The aerospace industry is fairly new in our day in age. It has been recorded in history that the first flight ever by man took place in Kitty Hawk, NC roughly 100 years ago. Since that first model, drastic improvements have been made in aerospace technology. Aerospace has evolved from simple prop planes to sound barrier breaking jets and even to space shuttles. The very definition of aerospace in the adjective or active form is “of or relating to aerospace, to vehicles used in aerospace or the manufacture of such vehicles, or to travel in aerospace.” In general, aerospace deals with any dynamic manufactured vehicle that travels above the surface of the earth. This, as you might expect, leaves two possibilities, the atmosphere or our earth, and outer space. Such basic examples of aerospace vehicles are Cessna planes, Black Hawk helicopters, Goodyear blimps and the Columbia Space Shuttle. Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, aerospace has and will continue to be an integrated part of our society.
