“The Maze Runner” is one of the movies that I can watch over and over again without getting sick of it. The excellent performance of some actors and the mystery of the maze are enough to keep the audience interested throughout the movie. However, the music and some aspects of movie are disappointing. The film will look very familiar if you have watched “The Hunger Games” or “Divergent”. “The Maze Runner” is a truly beautiful representation of young adult novel adaptation. It is based on the first novel in James Dashner’s popular trilogy. The director has done a great job of catching what was important in the novel: the plot, the mystery, and the characters. If you are thinking of watching a typical young adult movie, this one is not right …show more content…
for you. Unlike some other films, there is no typical teenage romance that can be so boring. The story begins with an elevator taking a frightened young boy, Thomas, up into a place called the Glade. He wakes up in the elevator with no memory of his past life. The only thing he remembers is his name, Thomas. When the doors open, he is presented to a group of young boys known as the Gladers who also have no memories except their names. They live in a maze surrounded by very high walls that changes every day. Every month, the elevator delivers a new boy and some supplies needed for the Gladers. Thomas soon finds out that they are all trapped in the maze and there are monsters called Grivers which will kill the boys if they try to escape the maze. In the Glade, under the leadership of Alby and Newt, everyone is given a job according to their skills. The boys grow food in order to stay alive in the maze, and some boys are runners who explore the maze to find a way out. Thomas quickly becomes part of the community, and he wants to be a runner. He is desperate to find a way to escape the maze and find freedom. Despite the great storyline, the biggest disappointment in “The Maze Runner” is the violence. It includes a lot of intense violence and disturbing scenes. During the movie, a boy is stabbed with a large sword which can be too intense for young people. Also, the boys use many weapons such as knives, sticks and stone throughout the movie. They sometimes throw weapons to kill each other. Some boys are shot in their chest, and we can see their blood everywhere. The dead bodies, injuries and bloody wounds are often shown in the film. When some boys are attacked and bitten by Grievers which are creatures that bite and eat the people in the film, they become violent and try to attack and bite other boys. The Grievers build tension and suspense throughout the film. In the maze, many characters die, and the scenes in which the Grievers eat the boys are very disturbing. The performance of actors will not disappoint the audience. Every actor takes their characters to life so brilliantly. Dylan O’Brien plays the lead role, Thomas. O’Brien performance in “The Maze Runner” is absolutely impressive. Dylan O’Brien’s portrayal of Thomas is so realistic that you will see him as Thomas in the movie. Also, Dylan O’Brien stars as Stiles in the TV series “Teen Wolf”. In my opinion, O’Brien improved his acting to a whole new level, comparing it to his acting in “Teen Wolf”. Kaya Scodelario plays the female lead character, Teresa who is the first female resident in the movie. She did a great job of bringing the characteristics of Teresa. However, her role is so little, comparing to other characters in the film. As a supporting character, Thomas Brodie-Sangster beautifully plays his character, Newt. Will Poulter plays Thomas’s enemy, Gally. Poulter definitely brings Gally’s character into the movie especially his anger and jealousy proves how good his performance is as an actor. Gally’s personality is the opposite of his actual personality. I could not have asked for a better Gally. The film techniques are solid.
The use of CGI, lighting and camera angles plays a large part of making “The Maze Runner” a successful film. The use of computer-generated imagery is fantastic. The Grievers looks so real and scary as they should be, and the glade and the maze are what you would expect it to be. The movement of the maze is also very believable due to the good use of CGI. The lighting in the film is great. The maze is grey and dull, while the Glade is bright during the day. The lighting provides excellent contrast between the Glade and the maze. A perfect example of the lighting is during the scene when the Grivers try to attack the Gladers, there is almost no light, but we can still distinguish each person from everyone else. The film has many different camera angles that provide the audience many things about the scene or the characters. High angles are used on the glade. This shot shows the audience how small the Gladers are in the huge Glade and makes the characters seem smaller and less powerful. Low angles are used on the maze to show the audience how the characters are seeing it and how large it is. The film also uses many establishing shots as the location of the film is very important. Although the movie contains great CGI, lighting and camera angles, the music is very poor. The music does not quite fit into the scene that is happening in the film. The action scences are fun to watch and build tension as characters face challenges. The fast-paced action scenes are beautifully made and constantly keep the audience interested. In one scene, the Grievers is chasing Thomas and other residents while they are running around the maze and hiding from the
Grievers. Overall, “The Maze Runner” is a well-made film and a very enjoyable Young Adult adaptation with great plot progression, exciting action scenes, remarkable individual performances and excellent film techniques. The film also avoids cheesy romance that is very common in the young adult movies. However, the movie does not meet my expectations as it contains too many disturbing scenes, and the music is horrible. This film is most appropriate for young adult audiences due to its violence, but it is still entertaining and worth watching. I rate this film: 4/5
People do not have to fly to be hero, it takes much more. Many heroes of today are shown to have supernatural powers that makes them acquire amazing abilities, flying, super strength, skills to manifest anything, the list goes on. Our heroes in the present time are perceived by the audiences' mindset to have special powers but there are times where being a hero does not need to have all the extra tricks. Thomas, a character in The Maze Runner is thrown unconsciously with no memory into a place of the unknown called the Glades, consisting of only teenagers inhabiting the area. He would soon find out the whole place is bordered by a big wall that closes by night and day to protect them from the maze that are filled with demonic machines that will kill on sight. This begins his adventure, eager to learn what is out there and willing to become a maze runner which is equivalent to being a tribute for the greater good in their little homemade society. Having powers might help to become a hero, but in the dystopian novel The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, his protagonist Thomas demonstrates the hero journey in a more natural way by crossing the threshold, meeting a mentor, and lastly having tests, allies and enemies.
The plot of the movie “Blade Runner” becomes unrevealed till the end of the movie. Many assumptions about the plot and the final of the movie appear in the spectator’s mind, but not one of these assumptions lasts long. Numerous deceptions in the plot grip the interest of the audience and contribute for the continuing interest to the movie eighteen years after its creation. The main character in the movie is Deckard- the Blade Runner. He is called for a special mission after his retirement, to “air up” four replicants who have shown flaws and have killed people. There are many arguments and deceptions in the plot that reveal the possibility Deckard to be a replicant. Roy is the other leading character of the movie. He appears to be the leader of the replicants- the strongest and the smartest. Roy kills his creator Tyrell. The effect of his actions fulfils the expectation of the spectator for a ruthless machine.

Doomsday. Armageddon. 2012. The end of the world or the apocalypse is known by its many names and has become an extremely viral subject for this generation. But, imagine living in a world not playfully joking around about the apocalypse, but strategically trying to survive it. This is the harsh reality for Thomas, a teenager living in a virus polluted and self-destructing planet. A deadly disease has broken out called “the flare” which causes the most sane and rational people to become raging and hysterical flesh eaters. Not only has the virus taken the lives of millions, but the extreme climates have also killed the few remaining. In the novels The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, Thomas and his friends will have to fight to survive a world taken over by the sick and protect one other from those who say they want to help. The two novels share a touching story of young lives entwined during a difficult time and the lengths the characters go through in order to survive the apocalypse. The ultimate question within these novels is what is one willing to risk in order to survive? Within the novels The Death Cure and The Scorch Trials, Thomas is forced to fight for his survival on a daily basis, and in doing so he is constantly faced with either having to betray those closest to him, or remain the honest and true man he is, in order to survive. Within these novels, relationships are tested to such extremes that the repercussions of each survival based decision the characters make have the possibility of endangering the lives of those closest to them, but ultimately is a test to see who remains true to themselves and does not sell out their friends or themselves.
Hey you, Yeah… YOU! Would you want to live in a society where you live in a box for your entire life, and mean absolutely nothing to the just about anyone? For science right? NOPE! Obviously, Societies fall as a result of a corrupt government, Failing Social Structure, and Sickness. It is due to these factors that many great societies such as Greece, Rome, and the society depicted in the book Maze Runner fall.
The film Pan’s Labyrinth, has several common concepts with Joseph Campbell’s theory on heroes in Hero with a Thousand Faces. His theory emphasizes on tests that show their moral and basic instincts for the rite of passage to their threshold, in this case, the underworld. Campbell’s theory is a concept that surrounds an individual’s journey to heroism. This concept pertains to Ophelia due to her circumstances as a child who ventures out on thresholds, tests, and so forth. Campbell’s depiction relates to Ophelia as he describes the levels in which one must attain and accept as a female heroine. Furthermore, his theory exaggerates on the making of a hero to the resurrection in terms of physical and spiritual transformation. Ophelia’s character depicts a hero who has been resurrected as a human. Thus, she begins her journey to cross the threshold, “pass from the everyday world in the world of adventure,” (Campbell). There are many stages in the film that depicts Ophelia’s introduction to the stages of being a hero. More so, it focuses on tasks, which Ophelia must pass or fail in order to determine her role in the film; Princess of the Underworld or just a human soul. This is lead by the faun who simply reassures a place of ‘paradise’ for Ophelia only with her cooperation to listen and follow her morals.
"I don't give a fuck what you know or don't know, but I'm gonna torture you anyway, regardless. Not to get information. It's so amusing for me to torture a cop. All you can do is pray for a quick death, which you aint gonna get."
The Kite Runner focuses on the relationship between two Afghan boys Amir and Hassan. Amir is a Pashtun and Sunni Muslim, while Hassan is a Hazara and a Shi’a. Despite their ethnic and religious differences, Amir and Hassan grow to be friends, although Amir is troubled by Hassan, and his relationship with his companion, one year his junior, is complex. Amir and Hassan seem to have a "best friend" type relationship. The two boys, Hassan and Amir, are main characters in the book titled, The Kite Runner. The two boys have a relationship that is significantly different compared to most. There are many different facets that distinguish the relationship the boys possess. The boys do write their names in a pomegranate tree as the "sultans of Kabul" (Kite Runner 27) but, their friendship is not strong and it is one sided. Hassan has love for Amir. He loves him like a brother. Hassan is exceedingly loyal to Amir. The relationship between the two boys is emotionally wearing and rather gloomy for the most part. The main reason for their complicated relationship is the fact that Amir is Pashtun, and Hassan is Hazara. The Afghan society places Hassan lower than Amir. Hassan is Amir's servant. The placement of Hassan in the Afghan society disenables Amir from becoming Hassan's true friend. Amir sees Hassan as lower than human. Amir ruins the chance for friendship between himself and Hassan because he is jealous of Hassan, he thinks of Hassan as a lower human, and because Amir possesses such extreme guilt for what he has done to Hassan. Amir is an unforgivable person overall.
Directors use various techniques to create a compelling and memorable motion picture film for the audience. In 1982`s Blade Runner, Ridley Scott portrays various themes of mortality, memory and identity through various film techniques such as editing, cinematography, and mise-en-scène.
The novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner begins with a teenage boy waking up in an elevator who has no memory of the past, only that his name is Thomas. When the doors of the elevator open up he is pulled into a humongous square surrounding, called the Glade, by a group of teenage boys. The boys in the Glade refer to themselves as the ‘Gladers’. Thomas learns that the Gladers have lived in there for two years and that the Glade is located in the center of a maze which contains a labyrinth of high walls that move during the night and deadly creatures called grievers. The Glade is led by two boys, Alby and Newt; they both maintain order in the Glade by enforcing strict rules and jobs that keep the Gladers busy. A day after Thomas’ arrival an unknown girl arrives in the Glade. This shocks everyone because the Gladers only receive a new person every month, never within the same week. This also shocks everyone because she was the only girl in a maze full of boys. The girl also gives a message that everything is going to change and that she is the last one ever. Right after her message she immediately falls into a coma. The arrival of the girl causes many things to go chaotic including the sun seizing to rise, the Gladers stop receiving supplies from the creators of the maze, and the doors of the Glade that protect the Gladers from the grievers at night stop closing. When the girl, Teresa wakes up she informs Thomas that they both knew each other in the past and that the maze was a code. Thomas and the people who run around the maze to map out the labyrinth, the runners, look through the archives of the maps and find out the code. Then the leader of the runners, Minho, figures out that the cliff they thought was just a cliff was actua...
The Hunger Games is set in world called Panem that was once America, before the Capitol was overcome in some unexplained, apocalyptic war. As punishment for that aggression, the remains were divided into 12 districts. Every year each district has to send one boy and one girl between 12 and 18 years old, chosen by lottery, to compete in a nationally televised event called “the Hunger Games.” The purpose of this is to create a mass killing spree with only one survivor. What really twists this storyline is when two tributes from the same district fall in love and fight to protect each other until they are the last ones left in the games. The two go to extreme measures to keep one another out of danger. “You're still trying to protect me. Real or not real," he whispers. "Real," I answer. "Because that's what you and I do, protect each other” (Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games). Because the hunger games is such a gruesome event, the things Katniss and Peeta did for each other aren't typical things couples would give up for eachother. These two would share supplies and weapons along with going as far as killing off an attacking enemy. Seeing how far Katniss and Peeta were willing to go to be with each other gave me a better understanding of why Romeo and Juliet fought to never let anything get in between them. Even though Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet and the two families have an ancient rivalry they did not let that stand in the way of being with each other. “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name! Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, ...
I have always loved to read. While most children prefer watching television, I would rather read a book. About two years ago I read the book The Maze Runner, by James Dashner. After reading this book, I realized just how much Christ effects literature. I learned that we can see aspects of Christ in books written by secular authors. You can find Christian allegories that the author didn’t even realize they were writing.
The film combines many different types of cinematography to make these scenes come to life and add suspense. The mise-en-scene being used in the film creates a totally different aspect in the film. The Matrix also used many different special effects on the characters and the scene to make the film so spectacular in every way. The special effects used made the viewers truly believe that the film is a realistic action movie. Many people do not realize the role these types of cinematography play in a film until they actually pay close attention to every scene. Different lighting and color techniques help to set the mood for the film and cause suspense for the
The Matrix The Matrix is a science fiction movie about artificial intelligence computers replacing mankind. I believe that this movie is a common type of display from the media that is common paranoia so that they can get a reaction from people and sell their story. In the case of The Matrix, the movie dazzles people with awesome special effects using modern computer technology, which I find ironic. I find it self-conflicting and hypocritical for the media to use modern computer technology for their own good to show people how bad technology is.
I spent a lot of time considering what movie I would watch to write this essay. I listed off the movies that I would like to watch again, and then I decided on The Notebook. I didn’t really think I could write about adolescence or children, so I thought that, maybe, I could write about the elderly. The love story that The Notebook tells is truly amazing. I love watching this movie, although I cry every time I watch it. The Notebook is about an elderly man that tells the story of his life with the one he loves the most, his wife. He is telling the story to his wife, who has Alzheimer’s Disease, which is a degenerative disease that affects a person’s memory. She has no recollection of him or their life together, or even her own children. She wrote the story of their love herself, so that when he read the story to her, she would come back to him. There are three things that I would like to discuss about this movie. First, I would like to discuss their stage of life and the theory that I believe describes their stage of life the best. Second, I would like to discuss Alzheimer’s DIsease and its affect on the main character who has it and her family. Third, I would like to discuss how at the end of the movie, they died together. I know it is a movie, but I do know that it is known that elderly people who have been together for a long time, usually die not to far apart from one another.
