The Maturation of a Maternal Bond in Morning Song
What is the only difference between the emotions of an ordinary smiling new mother in the 1960's and those of Sylvia Plath when she writes her melancholy "Morning Song" soon after her child's birth? While most new mothers pretended all was well, Plath published her true feelings. Simply because society held that all new mothers should be filled with immense joy after giving birth does not mean that they actually were. Plath had the courage to admit she was confused, and her poem, "Morning Song," focuses on one woman's mixed senses of apprehension and of awe upon the birth of her child which create both feelings of separation and affection that contend to determine the strength of her maternal bond.
The first line of Plath's poem, "Love set you going like a fat gold watch," shows the emotional forces conflicting within the mother's mind. The fact that she chooses the word "love" rather than a more carnal image like "sex" shows that the infant was conceived from an intimate bond and creates a positive connection between mother and child. Using simile, "a fat gold watch," changes the impact of this line. While the word "fat" alludes to the cumbersome nature of the infant, the word "gold" represents the child as precious and valued, and the word "watch" conjures to mind the seemingly endless task of raising a child. In her book The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir asserts that "a whole complex of economical and sentimental considerations makes the baby seem either a hindrance or a jewel," but Plath's "fat gold watch" suggests a newborn can be both (509).

In "Morning Song," the mother's bond to her infant strengthens as she tries to deny it. While attempting to prove that she has no connection to this new life, the bonds become undeniable as the infant opposes her with his or her "clear vowels." This "handful of notes" is all that is needed to dispel all pretenses of indifference toward the child. As the cries "rise like balloons" so too, it seems, do the mother's spirits and attitude toward the new life she has brought into the world.

Stanza two shows us how the baby is well looked after, yet is lacking the affection that small children need. The child experiences a ‘vague passing spasm of loss.’ The mother blocks out her child’s cries. There is a lack of contact and warmth between the pair.
They loved them so much even though the parents didn’t deserve it most of the time. That is unconditional love. They grew up very poor and were often forgotten about. There dad was an alcoholic who disappeared for days at a time, and bouncing from job to job. When he was home and drinking he “turned into an angry-eyed stranger who threw around furniture and threatened to beat up [their] mom or anyone who got in his way”(23). Most of her memories of her dad are him being drunk, which turns him abusive and rude. They don’t have much money so she looks at is as good opportunity for her father to stop drinking. Jeannette never only sees her dad as an alcoholic like she should, she still cherishes his love. Along with her father’s drinking problem, her mother’s lack of rules and parental skills are out of the norm. She believes "people worry.... “people worry too much about their children. Suffering when they are young is good for them”(28). Her mother believes that they can learn on their own, showing that she does not care about the hardships her children are constantly dealing with in their environment. With this negligence the children are often forgotten about as well. Where is Nic? I must call Nic” (Sheff 239). He began having delusions from the medication that he was talking to his son while trying to remember his number (Sheff 241). Instead of worrying about if he would live, and if he’d ever be able to remember his name or where he was at, Sheff just worried about Nic.
Although the little girl doesn’t listen to the mother the first time she eventually listens in the end. For example, in stanzas 1-4, the little girl asks if she can go to the Freedom March not once, but twice even after her mother had already denied her the first time. These stanzas show how the daughter is a little disobedient at first, but then is able to respect her mother’s wishes. In stanzas 5 and 6, as the little girl is getting ready the mother is happy and smiling because she knows that her little girl is going to be safe, or so she thinks. By these stanzas the reader is able to tell how happy the mother was because she thought her daughter would be safe by listening to her and not going to the March. The last two stanzas, 7 and 8, show that the mother senses something is wrong, she runs to the church to find nothing, but her daughter’s shoe. At this moment she realizes that her baby is gone. These stanzas symbolize that even though her daughter listened to her she still wasn’t safe and is now dead. The Shoe symbolizes the loss the mother is going through and her loss of hope as well. This poem shows how elastic the bond between the daughter and her mother is because the daughter respected her mother’s wish by not going to the March and although the daughter is now dead her mother will always have her in her heart. Sylvia Plath a highly acclaimed twentieth century American poet whose writings were mostly influenced by her life experiences. Her father died shortly after her eighth birthday and her first documented attempt at suicide was in her early twenties. She was married at age twenty-three and when she discovered her husband was having an affair she left him with their two children. Her depression and the abandonment she felt as a child and as a woman is what inspires most of her works. Daddy is a major decision point where Plath decides to overcome her father’s death by telling him she will no longer allow his memory to control her.
Aurelia Schober, Plath’s mother, was studying at Boston University when she fell in love with her professor that taught German and biology, Otto Plath, whom she would marry in January 1932. Later in that same year on October 27, Plath was born to the couple. Plath’s father passed away when she was only eight. (Academy of American Poets) From then on, Plath began publishing her poems. In everything she did, she strived towards being flawless; she had straight A’s, was a good daughter, and earned prestigious prizes (Gilson). Schober aided in pushing her daughter towards excellence and always made sure Plath knew how proud she was of her. In fact, Sylvia’s mother collected her daughter’s achievements and praised her highly for them (Liukkonen). By 1950, she had been given a scholarship to attend Smith College and had hundreds of publications, which she would add to substantially in the time she spent at Smith (Gilson).

The choice in the speaker of each poem is also important, and also share a similarity between the two poets. The idea that the two women wrote poems that shared stories from their own life is not far-fetched, especially in the case of Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy”. Of the three poems, I found “Daddy” to be the easiest to understand because of its full sentences and vivid description. Furthermore, since the poets wrote as if the speaker of the poem was themselves, I found that their poems were more emotional and gripping than if they were not. Because of this, I considered their poetry very similar in that the speakers are like-minded emotionally, but the writing style of the poets themselves is different.

The focus of the poem is on the feelings of a female narrator that is waiting for her unborn baby. As previously stated, men were jealous of women because of their recreation power; during the era, recreation was a main focus of many writers. Moreover, Anna Barbauld validates in her poem just how the female narrator having the power to recreate a human being conveys hope and contentment. I will prove this contentment that the narrator has in the poem through Barbauld’s diction, female perspective, and nature as a metaphor.
When Sylvia Plath was told her father died at the tender age of nine, she bitterly said, “I’ll never speak to God again.” In her brief but indispensable writing career, Plath distinguished herself in the poetical realm with her body of work that includes but is not limited to poems, short stories, and one semi-autobiographical novel. Her legacy lives on through her dark themes laden with powerful images such as the moon and skulls, while a father-type figure acts as a significant force either as a central antagonistic power or an influential shadow looming in the background. Brooding thoughts and despondent emotion overcome the reader when faced with one of Plath’s numerous works such as “Daddy,” “The Colossus,” and “Lady Lazarus.” Sometimes straightforward in understanding, Plath’s works contain intermittently placed, unique choices in diction like “mule bray, pig-grunt” throughout her works. On February 11, 1963, Plath was found with her head placed in her kitchen oven (death by carbon monoxide), yet she continues to resonate with people to this day; is it because we are able to relate to her melancholy and heartache? Or because of our sickening-interest in her suicide and the events that led to it? Maybe it is both. Because of her father’s death at a young age, Sylvia Plath’s poems underlies a theme regarding her suicidal demise and victimization at the hands of a patriarchal society, particularly from her husband, Ted Hughes, and late father, Otto Plath.

I have now been playing this sport for 10 years. My goal was to do something I loved while being able to learn new skills (physically and mentally). For four of those years I played on rep teams for the Vancouver Thunderbirds. On these teams I learned commitment, from waking up at 5 am for a practice to having tournaments in Seattle, I was always there. After four years of training and learning how to represent the association, I decided to move down to the house league for the next five years due to the fact that I wanted to focus on school. On my house teams, I was voted as captain for all of them and got to learn how to lead and inspire a team. I learned that it wasn’t about being the best but being able to bring the strengths of my teammates together. This allowed my teams to play for the championship for the next 5 years (huh?? awkward wording) . I was able to take these experiences from hockey and apply it to school. I took my skills such as leadership and self discipline and applied it to my sports teams and school to push my team and myself. Lastly, I took my commitment and placed it at Maple Grove Elementary School and Magee where I coached a basketball team and volleyball
Poseidon played a big role in various forms of literature. There are two mainstream pieces of literature, which are Homers epics The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Odyssey is an epic about the famous Greek king of Ithaca Odysseus, and his struggle to get home that lasted ten years after the Trojan War. Through those ten years he battled many mythological creatures and faces the power of the gods numerous times. He faces the power of Poseidon specifically several times throughout the epic. Homer records Poseidon causing mayhem with his power saying, “he rammed the clouds together- both hands clutching his trident –churned the waves into chaos, whipping all the gales from every quarter, shrouding over in thunderheads” (161). In these lines we are able to picture the power of Poseidon by him being able to turn calm seas to stormy disaster with ease. There is another time in the epic where Poseidon’s power is displayed. When Odysseus is given a ride back to Ithaca on a phaeacian cutter or ship Poseidon becomes engaged. In the words of Homer, “the earthquake god with one flat stroke of his hand struck her to stone, rooted her to the ocean floor and made for open sea” (291).
