In the article, The Masked Avengers, by David Kushner, Kushner describes and goes into detail about the life of a man named, Christopher Doyon. Kushner starts his article with the childhood of Doyon and how he became involved with hacking groups early in his life. Doyon’s mother passed away when he was a child and he grew up with an abusive father. At fourteen years old, Doyon left his abusive home and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he joined his first hacker group called the Tech Model Railroad Club. Although Doyon was very into computers and hacking groups, he was not a skilled coder. He felt that he was more of an activist and that using computers and technology was his way to get his point across. Trying to make some money at a Grateful Dead concert, Doyon sold acid to an undercover officer, resulting in him being sentenced to twelve years in a correctional facility, where he served five years. When he arrived back to Cambridge and his hacktivist group, the Peoples Liberation Front (P.L.F.), Doyon said that the technological difference in that five year gap, “was gigantic--it was the difference between sending up smoke …show more content…
signals and being able to telegraph someone”. Going by the alias, Commander X, Doyon first created this name when he joined the P.L.F. The leader of the P.L.F. claimed to be a military veteran, who went by the alias Commander Adama. In 1999, a file sharing company named Napster, was sued by the Recording Industry Association of America and was eventually shut down in 2001.
Feeling the need to protect free internet, Doyon and the P.L.F. shut down the R.I.A.A website by flooding their servers with data. This method is called a Distributed Denial of Service or DDoS. This was just one of many attacks that Doyon and the P.L.F. pulled off. At the P.L.F.’s basement apartment, Doyon and Commander Adama met. It was at this meeting Adama showed Doyon the Epilepsy Foundation website. A certain link would take the user to a page that had flashing colored lights. This was a problem because strobing lights can trigger seizures in some epileptics. Enraged by this, Doyon asked Adama who was responsible for this. To which Adama said, “Ever hear of a group called
Anonymous?” Many people involved with Anonymous deemed themselves, “crusaders for justice”. One example of their ways to help society was that they posed as underage girls, in order to lure pedophiles. Once they had the pedophiles information they then sent it to the police. In 2008, online media company, Gawker Media uploaded a video of Tom Cruise boasting the advantages of Scientology. The video was later taken down by the Church of Scientology. Seeing this as an attempt to censor the internet, members of Anonymous sprang into action. Much like the P.L.F.’s attack on the R.I.A.A’s website, Anonymous attacked the Church of Scientology’s website using DDoS attacks causing it to shut down. In addition to the DDoS attacks, some members of Anonymous created what is called a “Google bomb”. This resulted in the main Scientology website appearing at the top of the search results when someone searched for “dangerous cult” on Google. Less harsh attacks included: sending pizzas to a Scientology center and also sending all-black faxes to their headquarters, causing them to waste their black ink. Doyon moved from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Santa Cruz, California in 2010. It was here where he joined as an activist in a group called Peace Camp. At this time, the Peace Camp activists were protesting a Santa Cruz homelessness law by sleeping on the city’s property. At meetings, Doyon suggested that they take their protest online. Doyon gloated his hacking skills to Kelley Landaker, an expert coder and member of Peace Camp. Although Landaker did not buy into Doyon’s hacking skills, Landaker did believe Doyon could positively help Peace Camp. Recalling a conversation with Doyon, Landaker said, “He created more media attention for the issue than anyone I’ve seen, and I’ve been doing this for twenty years.” Back in Cambridge, Adama instructed Doyon through e-mail, to watch Anonymous closely. Specifically, Adama wanted Doyon to recruit Anonymous members to the P.L.F. Skeptical, because of Anonymous stunt with the Epilepsy Foundation, Adama convinced Doyon that the mischievous hackers within Anonymous were a very small portion. Doyon found that joining an Anonymous Internet Relay Chat was easy because it did not require a password. He eventually found smaller chats where there were more dedicated members of Anonymous. Towards the end of 2010, the Peace Camp protests started to come to an end without a change to the law. Still wanting to make a change, Doyon believed that he could use the tactics from Anonymous to rejuvenate the movement. Reminiscing back to that period, Doyon remembers thinking, “I could wield Anonymous against this tiny little city government and they would just be fucking wrecked.”
Ken Hamblin is the author of “The Black Avenger.” He has worked in various media fields and continues to work as a talk radio host and has a talk show of his own. He also refers to himself as a thinking black man (384-385). Hamblin seems to believe that hard work is the only way to be successful. Hamblin writes an effective work that portrays ethos by using his racial credibility, pathos to invoke emotions, and logos by cause and effect.
A theme in “Our Secret,” by Susan Griffin that is developed through the character of Himmler, and the symbolism with the development of a cell is that if individuals hide constantly behind masks, they will struggle internally.
In the essay “In Defense of Masks,” by Kenneth Gergen, he states how people do not “normally develop a coherent sense of identity” (Gergen 2). Gergen talks about how we as people may “experience severe emotional distress,” (Gergen 2) instead of having a set identity. The difference between the idea of multiple identities that are represented by masks and having a coherent sense of identity of one’s true self, is that having a coherent sense of identity means that a person stays the same in every situation and never changes. On the other hand, having multiple identities that are represented by masks means that one’s identity is ever changing and shifting depending on the situation that they are in and the people who surround them. However, even
In ''The Masked Marvel's Last Toehold'', Dr. Richard Selzer nimbly and ably, even, dexterously, recounts a sad account of one of his patients, though it's tinged with happiness and youthful innocence lost. The ''toehold'' makes a repeat appearance, from the wrestling position that the wrestler 'Angel' performs on the 'Masked Marvel', which even as a boy, Richard Selzer feels is unfair, unjust, and terrible, to the second and last foot that he has an elderly patient that he is set to remove in the ending lines. Is it all just a metaphor, I thought, as I read it and realized that in fact, there are so many metaphors and relationships between people, words, and events in this short essay that it's remarkable. Is the 'Angel' a symbol, especially with the ''attitude of supplication and suffering'' that the Masked Man defers to him while he is the losing opponent of the wrestling match?
“In Defense of Mask,” by Kenneth Gergen he states that it is not possible for humans to find a coherent self identity without having a solution. The idea of developing a “coherent sense of identity” makes us act a certain way to please the wish of others. Gergen wants to find intentions of an individual 's choice of mask and how outward appearances and inward feelings we all come across. The author proves his statement by experimenting on people who had a positive and negative reaction from an interviewer. Therefore, the “coherent identity” versus “multiple identities” is detrimental to many individuals when they are trying to perceive into someone that they wish to become. I agree with Gergen, because having a mask hides
The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with an insight into the Super Hero Series Batman. This crime fighter originally appeared in Detective Comics issue #27 in 1939. It later became a comic book series, a TV series and a movie series. The character Batman is second only to Superman as a Super Hero. Amazingly Batman has no super powers, but he does have a lot of neat crime fighting gadgets. In this paper, we will explore the creation of Batman, his supporting cast of characters both good and bad and the gadgets he used.
Carl Williams the ‘former gangland kingpin’ was murdered in Barwon’s High Risk and Maximum Security Prison on the 19th of April 2010. At the time, he was serving a life sentence with a non-parole period of 35 years for ordering the murder of 3 people and the conspiracy to murder another (Butler 2010). Prominent news articles from Moor (2010), Butler (2010) and Stewart (2010) highlight Williams’ death in a perspective which allows the analysis of Williams’ victimisation in relation to Christie’s (1986) ‘Ideal Victim’ Theory and the consequence for such a representation of victims.
Have you ever seen the super hero that wears dark blue and a badge, but not wearing a cape? The person that is here to help in every way possible day or night no matter when or where? The ones who are here during the highest and lowest points for everyone because that is a part of their job. The ones who are here to help the people on this island, but most of the time are treated like the “bad guys”. These undercover heroes are the people we all know as police officers. Many people don’t realize that they don't have an easy job. They are the ones who need to enforce the laws and are looked at as the “bad guy”, but when they come to the rescue they are the “good guy”. The book Non-traditional Careers for Women states that, “Police officers protect the people and help keep the peace” (155).
Historically, the Anonymous has been engaging in activities that qualifies the group as hacker group as opposed to troll organisation. The group began its operation on December 2010 by attacking the MasterCard for blocking the Wiki Leaks website donations (Coleman 1). In January 2011, the Anonymous group attack the Tunisian government website for using illegal means against protesters. In February...

The movie industry has its own set of unique jargon that both the actors, directors, and crew members need to learn in order to understand the trade and make the production run smoothly. Everyone on the set has a specific role to play, whether it be the lead actor to someone holding the boom during filming, and each group has developed their own language in order to make their lives easier. This lingo originally established in Hollywood allowed for cast and crew to assign each other different tasks in preparation for the next stage of production, while not mixing up any of main scene for filming at hand. The language itself has remained predominantly inside of the movie industry, but a few terms have managed to become infused into mainstream
The Golden Age of Comics was perhaps the greatest era in comic book history. Many people loved the comics during this time period because they were all stories about good triumphing over evil. Many of these stories reflected over historical events over the time period. “Pro-American characters were popular due to the time period occuring mostly during World War II.” (PBS)
