Over countless centuries, the Roman Empire subjugated the world. Rome began quest for power in the last centuries B.C. and continued well into the time of Jesus. None could speak out against Roman rule. The main factor of the Roman Empire’s success was territorial expansion. The motion picture “Ben-Hur” tells of a Jewish family who is caught right in the middle of a similar situation with the empire during the days of Jesus. The main plot of Ben Hur and the focal characters of Messala and Judah Ben Hur portray friendship overpowered by dreams of political power and betrayal. This film is set against the backdrop of Roman occupied Judea during the first century. Primarily, the film focuses on the personal struggles of Judah Ben Hur, however, it also captures important events in the biblical testimony of Jesus. The film starts with the reunion of childhood friends, Jewish Prince Judah Ben Hur and Roman military commander Messala. While still a young child, Judah's best friend, Messala, moved to Rome for education. As the years went by, Judah and Messala never forgot each other. But while in Rome, Messala grew to be a wicked man that would do anything or use anybody to gain social prominence. Ordered by the Emperor, Messala returned to his homeland to rule as a Tribune. Judah heard of Messala's return and met him as soon as he arrived. The reunion does not go well, with Messala wanting Judah Ben Hur to betray his fellow Jews. Disagreement occurs and Messala frames Judah Ben Hur, his mother “Miriam” and his sister “Tirzah” accusing them for attempted murder of the Roman governor. Judah Ben Hur, then swears revenge against Messala and he is sent to work as a galley slave, and his mother and sister are sent to prison, where they en... ... middle of paper ... ... that time. The combination of drama, action and romance, along with very involving storyline is aided by an incredible soundtrack. The more one hears this music, the more one is moved by it. Almost all human sentiments are represented in the story: joy, sorrow, despair, pride, jealousy, hope, revenge, anger, forgiveness, compassion, redemption, love, hate, friendship, humor, etc. Above all, the stadium where the chariot races are held and the sea battle are unbelievable. The film makes sense with a message of revenge and forgetting the past. With dramatic musical score, breathtaking sets and costumes, huge masses of people, a vigorous sea battle between Roman fleet and Macedonian pirates, a memorable and spectacular chariots race, this inspiring film is an unforgettable solid motion picture. I would definitely recommend this to everyone, giving this a 5 out of 5.
