• From the reading, which of the ten myths surprised you the most and why? From the reading, the myth that shocked me the most was “The Love-in-a-vacuum Myth”. This particular myth surprised me the most because I was shocked that some people think their actions do not matter or affect their relationship with their spouse. In relationships and marriages we have to be willing to change at times and make compromises. If we are stubborn and have the mentality that we do not need to change, progression will never occur in our relationships. Jean Thompson’s short story, All Shall Love Me and Despair shows that proves that the feeling of love makes people compromise even if it can be harmful to themselves. When one finds them self constantly questioning every action they do when around a specific person, they may want to reconsider their relationship with that person. I believe this because one should be able to be comfortable, and them self, especially around those that they love. Annie and Scout are a couple who loves each other, but Annie second guesses most of her actions around Scout.
In Dryden's Lucretius, the speaker argues that (1) Love is a sickness, (2) Love's sickness enslaves, and (3) all attempts to remedy Love's sickness are vain and will only frustrate the lover. Just as Milton's Adam and Eve become enslaved to sin by disobeying God, so mankind becomes enslaved to Love when pierced with Cupid's "winged arrow". In Milton, there is redemption and freedom through Christ, but in Dryden, no salvation from love is possible. This poem leaves mankind in a hopeless, frustrated state, unable to break free from love's yoke. This essay will center on the last heroic couplet: "All wayes they try, successeless all they prove,/To cure the secret sore of lingering love".
Different forms of romantic love between a man and a woman can be seen throughout each of the three chosen texts, but through each negative aspect of these relationships they appear to affect them in an adverse way, whether this is through false love, forbidden love, or through unrequited love.
A History of Marriage by Stephanie Coontz speaks of the recent idealization of marriage based solely on love. Coontz doesn’t defame love, but touches on the many profound aspects that have created and bonded marriages through time. While love is still a large aspect Coontz wants us to see that a marriage needs more solid and less fickle aspects than just love.
In the poem “Friendship”, Katherine Philips writes her perspective over love, marriage, and friendship. When describing love, Philips compares it to heaven, claiming, “nature subsists by love…Love chains the different elements in one great harmony, linked to th’ Heavenly Throne,” (Friendship, line 5-8) and if a person knows how to love, then they are worthy enough to do so, according to heaven. If one cannot love, they are thought to be worse than a beast. When Philips is writing of this incredible love, she is not referring to a romantic love, the love Philips describes would be the love throughout a friendship. Her opinion of marriage shows in lines 29-34, as she writes, “The marriage-tie hath much of honor and divinity, but lust, design, or some unworthy ends may mingle there.” Even though it is possible for marriage to be a wonderful life choice, the factors that could end that relationship do not exist in a friendship. Love is often misinterpreted into something it is not by those who are married in order to fit a couples relationship. It is only through a friendship that one feels real, true love. In line 33, Phillips writes that friendship is more of a mental aspect, rather than just the physicality of many marriages in the 18th century. Philips idea of many marriages is that they are “Like earthly fires…is with offensive smoke accompanied, and by resistance only is supplied” (Line 39-42), in order to keep a marriage going, one must constantly put in effort and watch it to be sure that the fire does not die, however, even if the relationship is working, a couple will still have on-going problems, much like a fire has constant smoke. Friendship, on the other hand, is a “fiery element, with it’s own heat and nourishment content.” (Lines 42-43) Very few things can truly affect a friendship; it does not need constant help because a good friendship is strong. Romance can be defined as a medieval form of narrative which relates tales of chivalry and courtly love. Its heroes, usually knights, are idealized and the plot often contains miraculous or superatural elements. According to Tony Davenport the central medieval sense of romance is ' of narratives of chivalry, in which knights fight for honour and love.' The term amour coutois ( courtly love) was coined by the French critic Gaston Paris in 1883 to categorise what medieval French lyricists or troubadours referred to as ' fin armors'. Romances and lyrics began to develop in the late fourteenth century England, author like Chaucer or Hoccleve produced some of the first english medieval narratives. But how does medieval literature present the expericence of romantic love. The Classical mythology contains tales and epics of the ancient Greek and roman literatures and myths. On the other hand, Homer’s two epic poems, the Iliad relates to the events of the Trojan War while the Odyssey details Odysseus expedition after the war. Homer’s epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad present a major part of ancient history as modern fictional heroic stories. In ancient Greek, heroes were humans who were depicted to possess superhuman abilities. A key example in the classical mythology is Akhilles who is later known in Homer’s Iliad as Achilles. Achilles is he greatest hero of the Iliad whereas Odysseus is the greatest hero of the Odyssey. The greatest heroes from classic mythology and the modern fictional hero’s stories are mortal, and subject to death. The Odyssey and the Iliad marks the beginning of modern fictional literature.
For hundreds and hundreds of years, we, as humans have yearned for companionship; sharing our life’s with one another in an intimate, and special way. For some, this is extremely difficult, the feeling of being loved and loving somebody doesn’t happen as easily, quickly, or frequently as they would like, struggling their entire life to find that person who they are meant to be with. These are the people who are desperate for even the slightest bit of affection, the people who will do and give up about anything to feel wanted in this world. For others, this comes rather naturally, adopting the characteristics and behaviors of their parents, people or the environment around them. These people, who are experts at the art of being vulnerable and loving others, are presented with their own problem of being susceptible to get taken advantage of and heartbroken by others. To love is to be vulnerable, although that may seem like an obvious statement; the trick is the perfect amount of vulnerability. Love is a great, outstanding creation, but if somebody is too vulnerable or not vulnerable enough, it can come to a screeching halt where people get hurt or worse. Throughout history other pieces of work by various authors portray love to be a questionable thing that is untrustworthy and that vulnerability is a concept with hidden evils.
Cupid is a major symbol for Valentine’s Day. Simply because, he’s the god of love. Cupid was willing to do anything to make his mother, Venus, happy.
