“A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both.” (Milton Friedman). One of the most significant economists in the world is considered to be Milton Friedman. Milton Friedman, born on July 31, 1912, in New York, to a working-class family of Jewish Hungarian immigrants, was educated at Rutgers University and at the University of Chicago. Friedman is mostly known for his support for free markets, advocacy of capitalism, and as one of the most influential American economists of the twentieth century. He was also a statistician and a public intellectual, and became a professor of Economics at Chicago University. For several years, countless economists, politicians and regular people believed that governments should play the key role in preparation of how a nation’s economy should work. Friedman showed that government’s involvement usually produces less economic growth, less stability and creates greater limits on citizens’ freedoms. Throughout his theories and ideas he showed how a government can help better itself and provide its’ citizens more freedom. Some of his theories include the theory of monetarism, the quantity theory of money, privatization, and deregulation. His contributions, such as a government’s floating exchange rate and military, still have a great influence on many countries. Throughout Friedman’s career, he had a huge affect on the economy and will continue to.
Throughout his career, Milton Friedman had come up with many different ideas that would assist the economy. His main thought to improve the society was to get the government less involved with the economy. His main goal was to exclude the government from interfering...

...ea of the float exchange rate and his many other theories, is being used by most governments today. Friedman had a huge contribution in the scientific studies of economics and changed many views of people on the role of the government and the free market system. He presented his ideas through his books, interviews, and by becoming a politician. With a capitalist society the citizens are given many more advantages and freedom than a communist economy. The former advisor of President Reagan, Martin Anderson, had once stated, “If you step back and look at all the sweeping political and economic changes in the United States and even in other countries, a lot of people have had an important effect. But if you had to say one person who had the most impact, it’s Milton Friedman.” Milton Friedman has had a great influence on the world and will continue to in the long-run.
...here people abided by acceptable and fair practices in the market, these actions and oversight would not be necessary to ensure that we continue to live in a true democracy with political equality. Milton Friedman would have his pure market economy devoid of any government intervention while Lindblom’s concerns that the policy process will be endlessly trapped by arguments about the market would be eased. Democracy would truly mean political equality and allow all those that wished to participate to do so with all the information they require.
One of the most important aspects of Reagan’s time in office was his domestic policy. He knew to have a successful presidency and create a strong, the people of the United States needed to be cared for. His first goal was to turn the economy around from the stagflation it encounter in the Carter era. Stagflation is very similar to inflation. The main difference is that inflation is the result of a quick economic growth while causes the value of money to decrease with now economic growth. To accomplish the turn around, Reagan introduce his economic policy which became known as Reaganomics. Reaganomics was based in supply side economics. This economic theory says that lowering taxes through tax cuts increases revenue by allowing more money
Franklin D. Roosevelt, president of the united states from 1933 to 1945 (and the distant cousin of Theodore Roosevelt), was the first to convert to Keynes’s theories. He implemented massive public works programs to put people to work. Called the “New Deal”, an echo of Theodore Roosevelt’s square deal, it consisted of a series of programs from 1933 to 1938. As well as providing employment through massive works projects such as the Tennessee valley authority, which built dams to generate electricity. New deal programs provided emergency relief, reformed the banking system, and tried to invigorate agriculture and the economy. Many other programs were also put into place with were used to attemp...
I believe that it's’ important to use our constitution as a guiding tool to help appoint the correct people for the job.John Maynard Keynes was a British economist where he fundamentally changed the theory and practices of macroeconomics and economic policies of government. Although he was revolutionary most of his policies were controversial and used Keynesianism economic to get people to stay away from them . His approach to macroeconomic management was different since the previous traditional laissez-faire economists believed that an economy would automatically correct its imbalances and move toward a state of equilibrium, They expected the dynamics of supply and demand to help the economy adjust to recession and inflation without government action. Laissez-faire economics thus regarded layoffs, bankruptcies and downturns in the economy not as something to be avoided but as elements of a natural process that would eventually improve. However that was not the case for the great depression. Keynes also believed that a given level of demand in an economy would produce employment however he insisted that low employment during the depression resulted from inadequate
Since the birth of the country, there have been many influences on its development. The economy in particular has been an area of great importance. Many people have been factors in the growth of the United States’ economy. Perhaps the earliest and most influential of these was Alexander Hamilton. As shown in his effective policies, such as assumption of Revolutionary War debts, practical taxation, formation of the National Bank, and views on manufacturing, Hamilton was a dominant force from the beginning. During his term as secretary of the treasury, he acted with the power and commanding force of a Prime Minister. None of the other founding fathers contributed as much to the economy’s growth, and the shape of the country in general, as he did. Alexander Hamilton was the most influential of the United States’ early politicians on the development of the country’s economy.
Perhaps Roosevelt’s greatest blunders occurred in his attempts to fix the economy. The Nation claimed that “some [of his programs] assisted and some retarded the recovery of industrial activity.” They went so far as to say that “six billion dollars was added to the national debt.” All of this is true. Roosevelt’s deficit spending, provoked by the English economist John Maynard Keynes, did add to the already high national debt while his programs did not solve the record-high unemployment rate. This “enormous outpouring of federal money for human relief and immense sums for public-works projects [that] started to flow to all points of the compass” and nearly doubled the nation’s debt also brought about many changes that were, in a large sense, revolutionary (Document C).
Adam Smith was a philosopher whose political philosophies was based off of economics. He believed to some extent that there should be a redistribution of wealth, but at the same time there should be a limit to government interference in economy. He wanted the state to end politics that favor industry over agriculture or vice versa, and that business should be left to the business people. He also believed that the government cannot make people virtuous with laws, and that the state should not promote religion or
Just as John Stuart Mill did in the Principles of Political Economy, Paul Krugman in The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008 felt that the government should not only help American businesses gain profits, but also play a major role in protecting the people against big businesses and moguls. Krugman believes that the average citizen cann...
Although most economists cannot come to agreement on the definition of economics, the preceding quote from l. Robbins, in my opinion, seems to just about sum it up. Since the beginning, when man first had to choose between hunting and sleeping, there was economics. Today economics is in everything we buy, use, and make, from the gas in our cars to the food on our tables, economics plays a vital role with the manufacture, distrubution and consumption of each. To help us better understand the economic trends, certain men have become economist. In this paper I will revisit four of the major economists’ theories. Starting with the theories of Adam Smith, a philosopher well as an economist, to the modern (relatively) day theories of Milton Friedman, a Nobel Prize awardee, we will chronologically review the theories of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes, and Milton Friedman.

Keyen’s is also the author of one of the famous economic books called The General Theory Of Employment, Interest And Money. Milton Friedman, a supporter of the free market, was born in 1912 in New York. 4th child of a Jewish family that had emigrated from Ukraine. Although he was interested in pursuing mathematics after graduation, the horrible stare of the national income motivated him to take economics instead. Friedman attended Rutgers University and earned numerous degrees from the University of Chicago and Columbia University.... ...
Classical economists such as, Jean Baptiste Say, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and Thomas Robert Malthus, had a different view about the role of the government in a capitalistic society. The classical economists believed in a laissez-faire economy. They believed that the government should keep their hands off the nation’s economy. They felt that the market will be able to keep itself stable, without the intervention of the government. Jean Baptiste Say believed that supply would create its own demand. The classical economists had an assumption that the aggregate production of goods and services in the economy generate enough income to purchase all output. They also had the assumption that savings by the household sector matches investment expenditures on capital goods by the business sector.
My research in Classical Economics and Keynesian Economics has given me the opportunity to form an opinion on this greatly debated topic in economics. After researching this topic to great lengths, I have determined the Keynesian Economics far exceeds greatness for America compared to that of Classical Economics. I will begin my paper by first addressing my understanding of both economic theories, I will then compare and contrast both theories, and end my paper with my opinions on why I believe Keynesian Economics is what is best for America. Classical Economics is a theory that suggests that by leaving the free market alone without human intervention equilibrium will be obtained. This theory was the first school of thought for economists, and one of the major theorists and founders of Classical Economics was Adam Smith.
The theory of economics does not furnish a body of settled conclusions immediately applicable to policy. It is a method rather than a doctrine, an apparatus of the mind, a technique for thinking, which helps the possessor to draw correct conclusions. The ideas of economists and politicians, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influences, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist." (John Maynard Keynes, the General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money p 383)
Today, more than ever, there is great debate over politics and which economic system works the best. How needs and wants should be allocated, and who should do the allocating, is one of the most highly debated topics in our current society. Be it communist dictators defending a command economy, free market conservatives defending a market economy, or European liberals defending socialism, everyone has an opinion. While all systems have flaws and merits, it must be decided which system is the best for all citizens. When looking at both the financial well being of all citizens, it is clear that market economies fall short on ensuring that the basic needs of all citizens are met. If one looks at liberty and individual freedom, it is evident that command economies tend to oppress their citizens. Therefore, socialism, which allows for basic needs to be met and personal freedoms to be upheld, is the best economic system for all of a country’s citizens.
