The Vice Lords were always known to be violent and very brutal until one of its members by the name of Bobby Gore decided to make their public image look a lot better. He decided to change their name to the Conservative Vice Lord Nation. The gang turned into a legal organization that protected their neighborhood. Bobby Gore and David Dawley had the same idea to turn the gang into a positive force. They went to Washington D.C. to get grant money to make their community better. They also used the grants to create hang out spots, social clubs, businesses, recreational programs and social
In Los Angeles and other urban areas in the United States, the formation of street gangs increased at a steady pace through 1996. The Bloods and the Crips, the most well-known gangs of Los Angeles, are predominately African American[1] and they have steadily increased in number since their beginnings in 1969. In addition, there are over 600 active Hispanic gangs in Los Angeles County with a growing Asian gang population numbering approximately 20,000 members.
Nuestra Familia (NF, Spanish for Our Family) was created in the late 1960’s at the Soledad Correction Training Facility in California. (NF 2011) Nuestra Familia was created because some of the Spanish inmates had gotten tired of the abuse handed out by the Mexican Mafia to fellow Mexicans. (Nuestra Family (2011)) Nuestra Familia was created as protection from the Mexican Mafia for young Mexican-American from rural areas. The first members of Nuestra Familia were strictly from Northern or Central California. (NF 2011) The all-out prison war between the Mexican Mafia and Nuestra Familia occurred in 1968 when Sonny Pena was stabbed to death by a member of the Mexican Mafia at San Quentin state prison. The recruitment for the two gangs split California in two. ...
More recently, however, the Crips have begun to cease the use of colors as a means of identification, since it is likely to draw attention from police. Methods such as the use of college sport team jerseys and hats are sometimes used, but in general, what set a certain gang member claims can be determined solely by their tattoos.
The age range is mid-twenties and up. The members of the gang that we saw were all white men. Women were referred to as “old ladies”, and this could mean either a wife, mother, girlfriend, etc., but they were not full members of gang. Before one could become a member of the gang, they had to go through a one year probationary period. The symbols they used were a reaper, crossing an AR-15 rifle and a scythe in its hands. The gangs was involved in many violent acts, such as murders, robberies, and gun running. The Sons had an alliance with the 1-9ers, and their main rival was another motorcycle gang known as the Mayans, and the white supremacist group, also located in Charming. This gang has more than five members, ample amounts of organization and permanence, members identify as a member of the Sons, involved in criminal acts, and they have a subculture and use
The Bloods and the Crips are the two well-known gang families that started in the 1940’s in Los Angeles as a defense approach by the blacks against the whites (Dorais, Corriveau, 2009, p 8). Gangs are most often visible in specific areas such as restaurants, bars, metro stations, etc.: “The appearance of street gangs in Quebec and Canada dates from the 1980’s, when these groups started to become larger, more visible, and more disruptive to authorities and residents (Dorais, Corriveau, 2009, p 8-9). There are six definable features that can be used to identify the presents of a gang: “ a structured or degree of organization, an identifiab...
One of the largest gangs in prison with all-white male members is The Aryan Brotherhood. Established in the 1960s in California, the brotherhood was created because whites felt that black and Hispanic inmates were taking advantage of them. To be a part of the Aryan Brotherhood inmates is put on a 6 month probationary period. Once initiation, members are required to “making-bones” meaning to kill someone. “The AB traffics in drugs and has a blood in, blood out rule; natural death is the only non-violent way out” (Carlie, Michael). The member are covered in different tattoos to be identified who they are, such as: double lightening bolts, the initials

The Kaika Klan Outlaws (KKO), a Bloods gang, dominates the east side of Akron. As many as 200 members fly the colors red and black. Members have been involved in armed robbery, burglary, and shootings. However, the gang is primarily involved in drug dealing. The KKO was the target of a federal and local law enforcement investigation which resulted in the arrest of more than three dozen gang members.
Just like the Hells Angels, the gang was powerful, spread across mostly southern California and fourteen other states, along with other members over seas in Australia, Mexico and parts of Europe. They also take part in the same criminal activity including extortion and drug dealing. The two gang’s butted heads in Nevada in 2002, resulting in the death of a Mongol and two Hells Angels. The Mongols have a more violent culture because of their pattern of recruiting from street gangs, which bring with them a more bloodthirsty "revenge" culture. Which shifted the gangs
It could be an inner city gang from Chicago, a Biker gang from Australia or a Native American gang from Pine Ridge. The government is trying to fix gang issues in the big cities, but not paying as much attention to gang activity on reservations. With no money and not enough law enforcement, the reservation police have a very hard time stopping the crimes from occurring. With the lack of government funding, the rate youths join, the number of broken homes, the need for money, and the ability to get away with crimes fuels gangs all over the world and can lead to a one beautiful reservation or inner city into a crime ridden horror
They are a national gang. Of course, the gang is not as big here as where it originated in California. However, it is considered to be one of the largest gangs in the United States. That I do remember from gang class. Also, to be accepted into the gang, one must take a beating from members. This gang is known for violence and they do not hesitate to use extreme actions when protecting their turf against rivals or the police. They are big with the selling and distribution of crack cocaine, PCP along with other drugs. Other activities would be armed robberies, auto theft, assault and murder (Cruz, 2015).
Street gangs have become the primary distributors of illegal drugs on the streets, Gang members smuggle and transport drugs within the country, and many use juveniles to do their “dirty work” due to the high risks of getting arrested. Juveniles do not receive a sentence a grown adult would in court; which leads to many gangs persuading juveniles into joining their “Family”. The discovery of many juveniles gang related tattoos does not come as a surprise due to the large amounts of street gangs in the street that pursue teenager’s to join their associations. Most juveniles that get involved in the life of crime live in a single mother home which does play a big part of their past and present behavior. Gangs take advantage of juveniles who struggle to find their identity or have problems fitting in among others their age. Street gangs are always looking for young juveniles who will get distribute for their association; they are considered “fresh meat” which means they can mold them into being what they want them to be.
Within this group, there are ways to recognize a member or members. First, there are status symbols; they are symbols that help others within the group or rivals to recognize or spot members. These symbols most the time are tattoos, the way individuals are dressed or hands signs that are thrown up while these men and women are on the streets. Many of the tattoos a member has will be MS, or devil horns. Other common tattoos are thirteen, teardrops near the eyes and any numbers that actually add up to thirteen. These are just a few of the symbols that indicates a MS member. The reason these members began tattooing was during the period in which most of these members where getting deported. This was a mechanism to help these only English speaking members to survive in El Salvador. More recent members see the tattoos as a way to show their involvement with the organization. Most of the younger members are excited about their first MS tattoo. Some of the other ways they can show their MS affiliation is with gang signs. These are signs that they do with their hands, arms or fingers. This is basically a second language or what they call a silent language. They use these symbols to also organize things like hits, muggings or other violent crimes without having to speak. The members will usually walk on separate sides of the street and communicate using these symbols and that’s
